When do you sign up for unemployment benefits in Washington - timing questions
I'm confused about the timing for filing unemployment claims. My last day of work is this Friday but I'm not sure when I should actually apply for benefits through Washington ESD. Do I file immediately after my last day or wait until the following week? I don't want to mess up the timing and delay my first payment. Also wondering if there's a specific day of the week that's better to file or if it doesn't matter.

You should file your initial claim as soon as possible after your last day of work. Don't wait - there's no benefit to delaying your application. Washington ESD recommends filing within the first week after you become unemployed. The sooner you file, the sooner your claim can be processed.

•So I can file this weekend right after my last day Friday? I thought maybe I had to wait until Monday or something.

•Yes, you can file online at esd.wa.gov any day of the week, 24/7. The system is always available for new claims.

Just to add - your benefit year starts the Sunday of the week you file your claim, not necessarily the day you actually submit it. So if you file on Friday, your benefit year started the previous Sunday. This is important for understanding your claim dates.

•That's helpful to know! So the actual day within the week doesn't really matter then for when the benefits start?

Beatrice Marshall
•Exactly. The benefit year always starts on Sunday regardless of which day you file during that week.

One thing people don't realize is that you can't get benefits for the week you're still working, even if it's just one day. So if your last day is Friday, you can file that weekend but your first payable week would be the following week.

•Oh that makes sense. So I wouldn't get paid for this current week since I worked part of it, but I could still file my claim this weekend?

Melina Haruko
•Right, you can and should file this weekend. You just won't be eligible for benefits for any week where you worked, even partially.

I was in the same situation last month and kept trying to call Washington ESD to ask about timing but could never get through. Finally found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that helped me get connected to an actual person. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Made it so much easier to get my questions answered.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm about to be unemployed so trying to watch my spending.

•It's worth checking out their site for details. For me it was worth it just to avoid the stress of calling over and over.

•I've heard of services like that but never tried one. Did they actually help you get better answers than the website?

honestly just file as soon as you can and don't overthink it. the system will tell you if you did something wrong and you can fix it later. i waited like 2 weeks thinking i had to have all my paperwork perfect and it just delayed everything for no reason

Pedro Sawyer
•That's a good point. I tend to overthink these things and want everything to be perfect before I submit.

•yeah same here but with unemployment you really just want to get the ball rolling. you can always update info later if needed

Also worth mentioning that when you file your initial claim, you'll need to provide your employment history for the last 18 months. Have your pay stubs or tax documents ready because they'll ask for employer names, addresses, dates of employment, and reason for separation.

Pedro Sawyer
•Good to know. I have most of that info but might need to dig up some old pay stubs. Is it okay if I don't have exact dates?

Mae Bennett
•Best to be as accurate as possible, but approximate dates are better than not filing at all. You can always provide additional documentation later if needed.

Wait, do I need to wait for my final paycheck before filing? I'm getting laid off next week but won't get my last check until the week after.

Mae Bennett
•No, you don't need to wait for your final paycheck. You can file as soon as your employment ends. Just report the final pay when you receive it on your weekly claim.

•Thanks, that's one less thing to worry about during an already stressful time.

The Washington ESD website has a good checklist of what you need before filing. I'd recommend looking at that first so you're prepared. Having everything ready makes the process go much smoother.

Pedro Sawyer
•I'll definitely check that out. Is it easy to find on their site?

Mason Lopez
•Yeah, it's right on the main unemployment page. Look for 'Before You Apply' or something similar.

One more timing thing - after you file your initial claim, you'll need to file weekly claims every week to actually receive benefits. Don't forget about that part or you won't get paid even if your claim is approved.

Pedro Sawyer
•When do the weekly claims start? The week after I file my initial claim?
0 coins
Vera Visnjic
•Your first weekly claim will be for the first full week after you became unemployed. The system will tell you when to file it.

•Got it, so I need to remember to keep filing every week. I'll set a reminder on my phone.

Just went through this process myself. Filed on a Saturday after my last day Friday and everything went smoothly. The online application took about 30 minutes and I got confirmation right away.

Pedro Sawyer
•That's reassuring to hear. Was the application straightforward or were there confusing parts?

Jake Sinclair
•Pretty straightforward if you have your employment info ready. The hardest part was remembering exact dates but like others said, close estimates worked fine.

IMPORTANT: Make sure you file in the right state! I know that sounds obvious but I had a friend who worked remotely and filed in the wrong state by mistake. Cost him weeks of delays.

•Good point. I work in Washington state so definitely filing with Washington ESD.

•Perfect. Just wanted to mention it since remote work makes these things more complicated sometimes.

Question about severance pay - if I'm getting severance, does that affect when I should file or when I can start collecting benefits?
0 coins
Mae Bennett
•Severance pay can affect your eligibility timing. You should still file your claim right away, but report the severance pay. Washington ESD will determine how it affects your benefits.

Honorah King
•Thanks, I'll make sure to report it accurately when I file.

Also remember that you need to be actively looking for work to continue receiving benefits. Start thinking about your job search strategy now so you're ready when the work search requirements kick in.

Pedro Sawyer
•When do the job search requirements start? Right away or is there a grace period?
0 coins
Oliver Brown
•Usually starts after your first week of benefits, but check the specific requirements on the Washington ESD site. You need to keep detailed records of your job search activities.

This thread is really helpful! I'm getting laid off in two weeks and have been stressed about the timing. Sounds like I should file right after my last day and not wait around.

Pedro Sawyer
•Yeah, that seems to be the consensus. File as soon as possible after your last day.

Mary Bates
•Definitely going to do that. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences.

Has anyone had issues with the Washington ESD website being slow or crashing when trying to file? I'm worried about technical problems preventing me from filing on time.

Mae Bennett
•The site can be slow during peak times, especially Monday mornings. Try filing during off-peak hours like evenings or weekends if possible.

•Good tip, I'll try to file during off-peak times to avoid any technical issues.

Another vote for that Claimyr service mentioned earlier. Used it when I couldn't get through to Washington ESD and it saved me so much time and frustration. Sometimes it's worth paying a little to avoid the headache of calling dozens of times.

Pedro Sawyer
•Good to hear another positive experience with it. I'll keep that in mind if I run into issues.

•Yeah, definitely worth considering if you need to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD about your specific situation.

One last thing - after you file, you'll get a determination letter in the mail or online. Don't panic if it takes a few days or even a week to arrive. That's normal processing time.

Pedro Sawyer
•How will I know if my claim was approved or if there are any issues?
0 coins
Lorenzo McCormick
•The determination letter will tell you if you're approved and what your weekly benefit amount will be. You can also check your account online for updates.

Just to summarize for anyone else reading this: File as soon as possible after your last day of work, have your employment history ready, and don't overthink it. The Washington ESD system will guide you through the process.

Also remember that if you have questions after filing, you can always call Washington ESD or use services like Claimyr if you need help getting through. Don't let confusion stop you from getting the benefits you're entitled to.

Pedro Sawyer
•Absolutely. It's good to know there are options if I need help navigating the system.

•Exactly. The important thing is to file your claim and then work through any issues that come up.
