When can I file unemployment with Washington ESD - confused about timing
I'm really confused about when exactly I can file for unemployment benefits with Washington ESD. My last day of work was Friday but I'm not sure if I should file right away or wait until next week? I've heard different things from people and don't want to mess this up. Also does it matter what day of the week I file? I really need to get this process started but want to make sure I do it correctly from the beginning.

You can file your initial claim immediately after your last day of work. Don't wait - there's no benefit to delaying and you might miss out on a week of benefits. The sooner you file, the sooner your claim can start processing.

•Thanks! So I can literally file today even though I just stopped working Friday?

•Yes exactly. Washington ESD wants you to file as soon as you're unemployed through no fault of your own.

I made the mistake of waiting a week to file thinking I had to wait and it just delayed everything. File your initial application right away but remember you still have to wait one week before you can receive your first payment - that's the waiting week.

•What's a waiting week? Is that different from the week I file?

•The waiting week is basically the first week of your claim where you don't get paid even if you're eligible. It's just how the system works - everyone has to serve one unpaid waiting week.

Just went through this whole process myself. File your initial claim ASAP on the Washington ESD website. The day of the week doesn't matter for your initial application. What matters is filing your weekly claims on time once your claim is established. I was so frustrated trying to get through to someone on the phone to ask basic questions like this. Ended up using claimyr.com to actually reach an agent who confirmed the timing rules. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows exactly how it works.

•Never heard of that service - is it legit? I'm desperate to talk to someone at Washington ESD.

•Yeah it's totally legitimate. Basically they call for you and get you connected to an actual Washington ESD representative. Saved me hours of busy signals and getting hung up on.

•I was skeptical about using a third party service but honestly the Washington ESD phone system is impossible. Might look into this.

File immediately but make sure you have all your information ready - social security number, employer info for the last 18 months, reason for separation, etc. The application process is pretty straightforward but having everything organized helps.

•Do I need pay stubs or just employer names and addresses?

Beatrice Marshall
•You'll need employer names, addresses, dates of employment, and reason you're no longer working there. Pay stubs are helpful but not required for the initial application.

ugh the washington esd system is such a nightmare... i filed right away but then had to wait forever for adjudication because they had questions about my separation. wish someone had warned me about that possibility

•What kind of questions did they have? I was laid off so hopefully that's pretty straightforward.

•if you were laid off you should be fine, they mostly question people who quit or were fired. mine went to adjudication because my employer contested it

File today! I procrastinated for a few days thinking I needed to 'get my affairs in order' first and it was a mistake. Every day you wait is potentially money lost. The Washington ESD system starts your claim from when you file, not from when you actually became unemployed.

•Wait, so if I wait a week to file I lose a whole week of benefits?

•Not exactly - you can backdate your claim to your actual last day of work, but it's easier and safer to just file right away.

To clarify the backdating thing - yes you can request to backdate your effective date to your last day of work, but Washington ESD will want documentation of why you didn't file sooner. It's much simpler to just file immediately.

•Good to know. I'll file today then. Thanks everyone!

•Smart choice. And remember after you file your initial claim you'll need to file weekly claims every week to get paid.

One more thing - make sure you file during business hours if possible. I filed at like 2am and had some technical issues that I couldn't get help with until the next business day.

•The website is only available during business hours?

Mae Bennett
•No the website is available 24/7, but if you run into problems the support is only available during business hours.

Actually just remembered - if you do run into issues with your claim later, that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier is really helpful for getting through to Washington ESD. I probably would have given up trying to call without it.

•How much does something like that cost? Seems like it should be free to reach a government agency.

Pedro Sawyer
•I agree it should be free, but the reality is Washington ESD's phone system is overwhelmed. The service was worth it for me to actually get answers instead of spending hours trying to call.

Update: I filed my initial claim this afternoon and it went through smoothly! Thanks for pushing me to do it right away. Now I just wait to see if it gets approved or goes to adjudication.

glad you got it filed! just remember you have to do job search activities and report them when you file your weekly claims. dont forget about that requirement

Caesar Grant
•How many job search activities do I need to do each week?

Melina Haruko
•i believe its 3 per week but double check that in your account. they changed the requirements a while back

Beatrice Marshall
The job search requirement is typically 3 qualifying activities per week, but check your specific requirements in your Washington ESD account as they can vary based on your situation and local job market conditions.

•Do online applications count as job search activities?

Beatrice Marshall
•Yes online applications definitely count. You can also include things like attending job fairs, networking events, or WorkSource appointments.

Just want to add that if your claim gets complicated or you need to speak with someone at Washington ESD, there are services that can help you get through the phone lines. I used one called Claimyr after spending literally days trying to call. Found out about it from someone on Reddit and it was a lifesaver.

•Is that the same service someone mentioned earlier? Might need to bookmark that just in case.

•Yeah probably the same one. Really wish I had known about it from the beginning instead of wasting so much time on hold and getting disconnected.

One final piece of advice - set up direct deposit in your account if you haven't already. It's much faster than waiting for a debit card to arrive in the mail.
