What to do after filing for unemployment - confused about next steps
Just submitted my initial unemployment claim through the Washington ESD website yesterday and I'm not sure what happens next. The confirmation page said my claim was received but didn't give me much detail about the process. Do I need to do anything else right now or just wait? Also worried I might have missed something important in the application. This is my first time filing for unemployment so I have no idea what to expect.

After filing your initial claim, Washington ESD will review your application and send you information about your eligibility determination. You should receive paperwork in the mail within 7-10 business days explaining your weekly benefit amount and any job search requirements. Make sure to keep checking your SecureAccess Washington account for updates.

•Thanks! Should I be doing anything in the meantime or just wait for the mail?

•You can start documenting your job search activities now since you'll need to report them when you file your first weekly claim. Keep records of where you apply and any contacts you make.

The waiting is the worst part honestly. I filed 2 weeks ago and still haven't heard anything back from Washington ESD. Tried calling but can't get through to anyone.

•If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone, you might want to try Claimyr. It's a service that helps you get through to an actual agent - check out claimyr.com. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that explains how it works.

•Never heard of that before but I'm desperate at this point. Will check it out thanks

Make sure you file your weekly claims! Even if your initial claim is still processing, you need to file every week to maintain your place in line. I made the mistake of not doing this my first time and it delayed my benefits by weeks.

•How do I know when to start filing weekly claims? I don't see that option in my account yet.
0 coins
Selena Bautista
•It usually becomes available after your first week of unemployment. Check your account every few days - the option will appear under 'File Weekly Claim' when it's time.

•This is confusing me too. I thought you couldn't file weekly claims until your initial claim was approved?

IMPORTANT: Start your job search immediately! Washington requires you to make at least 3 job search contacts per week. You'll need to log these in WorkSourceWA.com and report them when filing your weekly claims. Don't wait until you get your determination letter.

•What counts as a job search contact? Just applying online or do I need to do more?

Ellie Perry
•Submitting applications counts, but you can also attend job fairs, contact employers directly, network with people in your field, or participate in WorkSource workshops. Keep detailed records of everything.

•What specific questions do you have? The system can be overwhelming but once you understand the basic steps it gets easier to navigate.

•like do i need to register with worksource right away or can i wait? and when exactly do i start filing weekly claims?

Here's the typical timeline after filing: Week 1 - Initial claim processing, Week 2 - Eligibility determination mailed, Week 3 - First weekly claim becomes available, Week 4 - First payment if approved. This can vary if your claim goes into adjudication for any reason.

Daniel White
•What causes a claim to go into adjudication? Is that something I should be worried about?
0 coins
Tasia Synder
•Adjudication happens when Washington ESD needs additional information to determine eligibility. Common reasons include job separation issues, wage discrepancies, or identity verification. It's not necessarily bad, just takes longer to process.

Check your email too! Washington ESD sends updates there sometimes and people miss them. Also make sure your address is correct in your profile because they mail important documents.

Daniel White
•Good point, I should double-check my contact info. Can I update it after filing or do I need to call?

Teresa Boyd
•You can update most info through your SecureAccess Washington account, but some changes might require calling or submitting paperwork.

I'm in the same boat - filed 3 days ago and anxiously waiting. The uncertainty is killing me because I need to know my benefit amount to budget properly.

•You can estimate your weekly benefit amount using the formula on Washington ESD's website. It's based on your highest earning quarter from the past year.

Mohamed Anderson
•I tried that calculator but I'm not sure I'm interpreting my wage history correctly. Might be easier to just wait for the official determination.

Update on my situation - finally got through to Washington ESD using that Claimyr service someone mentioned. Turns out my claim was held up because they needed to verify my identity. The agent walked me through uploading the required documents and said it should process within a few days now.

Daniel White
•That's great news! What documents did they need for identity verification?
0 coins
Natalia Stone
•Driver's license, Social Security card, and a recent utility bill. Pretty standard stuff but the website didn't make it clear that's what was needed.

Don't forget about the waiting week! Washington has a one-week waiting period before benefits start, so even if you're approved immediately, you won't get paid for your first week of unemployment.

Daniel White
•Wait, so I won't get benefits for this week even if everything goes smoothly?
0 coins
Lourdes Fox
•Exactly. The first week is unpaid but you still need to file a weekly claim for it. It's just how the system works in Washington.

•This confused me too when I first filed. You'll get paid starting from your second week of unemployment if approved.

ok so i registered with worksource today and its asking me to schedule an appointment with a counselor... is this required or optional?
0 coins
Ellie Perry
•It depends on your situation. Some people are required to participate in reemployment services, others it's optional but can be helpful. Check your determination letter when you get it - it will specify any requirements.

Just want to echo what others said about keeping detailed records. I got selected for a random audit and had to provide documentation for every job search activity I reported. Better to over-document than under-document.

Daniel White
•How common are these audits? Now I'm worried about getting selected.
0 coins
Bruno Simmons
•They're pretty rare but it happens. As long as you're honest about your job search activities and keep good records, you'll be fine if selected.

Pro tip: set up direct deposit as soon as the option becomes available in your account. Paper checks take much longer to receive and can get lost in the mail. I learned this the hard way.
0 coins
Daniel White
•Good advice! I'll make sure to set that up once my claim is processed.

Nolan Carter
•You can usually set up direct deposit during the initial claim process or add it later through your SecureAccess Washington account.

Quick question - if I start a part-time job while collecting unemployment, how does that affect my benefits? Do I need to report it right away?
0 coins
Tasia Synder
•Yes, you must report all work and earnings when filing your weekly claim. Washington has a partial benefit formula that reduces your weekly amount based on how much you earn, but you might still qualify for some benefits.

Mohamed Anderson
•Thanks, that's helpful to know. I was worried taking any work would disqualify me completely.

The whole process gave me such anxiety at first but it's really not that complicated once you get into the routine. File your weekly claims on time, do your job search, and keep good records. That's basically it.
0 coins
Daniel White
•This is reassuring to hear. I tend to overthink things so I'm probably making it more complicated than it needs to be.
0 coins
Zane Gray
•Exactly! The system works as long as you follow the basic requirements. Don't stress too much about it.

One thing that helped me was setting up a calendar reminder to file my weekly claim every Sunday. Easy to forget if you don't make it a routine, and missing a week can be a hassle to fix.
0 coins
Daniel White
•Smart idea. I'll set up a recurring reminder once I'm eligible to start filing.
0 coins
Maggie Martinez
•Yeah it becomes second nature after a few weeks. Much better than scrambling to remember if you filed or not.

Also worth mentioning - if you have any issues or questions, don't wait weeks to address them. The sooner you resolve problems, the sooner your benefits can start flowing.

•This is so true. I waited way too long before trying to contact Washington ESD about my delayed claim. Could have saved myself a lot of stress.

Final thought - bookmark the Washington ESD website and your SecureAccess Washington login page. You'll be checking them frequently over the coming weeks and it saves time to have quick access.

Another important thing to keep in mind - if you moved or changed jobs recently, double-check that Washington ESD has all your correct wage information from the past 18 months. Sometimes wages from other states or recent employers don't show up automatically in their system, which can affect your benefit calculation. You can request a wage review if something looks missing from your base period. Better to catch this early than have it delay your payments later!

•This is really good advice! I worked in Oregon for part of last year before moving to Washington, so I should definitely check if those wages are included. How do I request a wage review if something is missing?
