What happens after you apply for unemployment with Washington ESD - confused about next steps
I submitted my initial unemployment application through the Washington ESD website last Thursday and I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do now. I got a confirmation number but haven't received any letters or emails yet. Do I need to file weekly claims right away or wait for approval? Also worried I might have messed something up on the application since this is my first time dealing with unemployment. How long does it usually take to hear back from Washington ESD?

You should receive a determination letter within 7-10 business days explaining whether your claim was approved or needs more information. Don't file weekly claims until you get that letter - if you file too early it can cause issues with your claim processing.

•Thank you! I was getting worried since it's been 3 days already. Should I be checking my SecureAccess Washington account daily?

•Yes, check your SAW account regularly. Sometimes documents show up there before you get physical mail.

The waiting is the worst part honestly. I applied 2 weeks ago and still haven't gotten my determination letter. Keep checking your account every day.

•2 weeks?? That's making me more nervous. Did you try calling them?

Justin Chang
•I've tried calling like 50 times, always busy or they hang up on me after being on hold forever.

Here's what typically happens after you apply: 1) Washington ESD reviews your application (5-10 days), 2) You receive a monetary determination showing your weekly benefit amount, 3) You get approved or they request more info, 4) If approved, you can start filing weekly claims, 5) First payment usually comes 2-3 weeks after approval if there are no issues.

•This is super helpful! Do they always send the monetary determination before the approval decision?

Grace Thomas
•Usually yes, but sometimes they come together. The monetary determination just shows what you'd be eligible for IF approved.

•What if you disagree with the monetary determination amount? Can you appeal that?

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone, I found this service called Claimyr that actually got me through to an agent. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of trying to call myself.

•Is that legit? I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point.

•Yeah it's real. I was skeptical too but it actually worked for me when I needed to check on my adjudication status.

•How much does something like that cost? Seems too good to be true.

THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN!!! I've been waiting 3 WEEKS for my determination and can't reach anyone. Meanwhile my rent is due and I have no income. This is ridiculous.

•I'm sorry you're going through that. That's exactly what I'm afraid of happening to me.

•Have you checked if your claim went into adjudication? That can add weeks to the process.

Ellie Lopez
•How do I check that? My account just says 'claim under review' which tells me nothing.

Just went through this process last month. Make sure you have all your employment history ready because they might ask for additional documentation. Also start keeping a job search log even before you're approved - Washington ESD requires 3 job contacts per week once benefits start.

Kennedy Morrison
•Wait, I need to be job searching already? I thought I could wait until I'm approved.
0 coins
Hunter Brighton
•Better to start early. The job search requirement kicks in immediately once you start receiving benefits.

Grace Thomas
•Actually the job search requirement doesn't start until your first payable week, but starting early is smart.

what documents do they usually ask for? i want to be prepared

Hunter Brighton
•Common ones are pay stubs, separation paperwork, ID verification, work authorization if applicable.
0 coins
Kennedy Morrison
•I have most of that ready but not sure about the separation paperwork. My company just laid me off, didn't give me any specific documents.

Wesley Hallow
•For layoffs, they can usually verify directly with your employer. Make sure you have your last day of work and reason for separation correct on your application.

Been there! The anxiety of waiting is real. One thing that helped me was setting up direct deposit right away in my account so when payments do start, they come faster.

Kennedy Morrison
•Good tip! I think I set that up during the application but I'll double check.

Chad Winthrope
•Yeah definitely verify it's set up correctly. Paper checks take forever to arrive.

One more important thing - if your claim goes into adjudication (which means they need to investigate something), that can add 2-6 weeks to the process. Common reasons include job separation issues, availability questions, or wage discrepancies.

•How do you know if your claim is in adjudication? Will they tell you?
0 coins
Wesley Hallow
•It should show in your account status, but sometimes it's not clear. You might just see 'pending' or 'under review'.
0 coins
Ellie Lopez
•This is exactly what's happening to me! Been 'under review' for weeks with no explanation.

That's when I used Claimyr to get through to an agent. They were able to tell me exactly what was holding up my claim and what I needed to do to resolve it. Worth checking out if you're stuck.

•I might have to try that. This waiting is killing me financially.

•How quickly were you able to get through to someone with that service?

•It took a few tries but way better than calling myself. The video demo explains how it works pretty well.

Update: Finally got my determination letter! Turns out they needed verification of my last employer's information. Applied 2 weeks ago, just got approved yesterday. Now I can start filing weekly claims.

Kennedy Morrison
•Congrats! That gives me hope. Did they contact you for the verification or did you have to call them?

Justin Chang
•They sent a request through my online account. I almost missed it because I wasn't checking regularly enough.

•This is why checking your SAW account daily is so important. Critical documents show up there first.

For anyone still waiting - also make sure your contact information is current in your account. Friend of mine had delays because they were sending letters to his old address.

•Good point! I moved recently so I should double check that everything is updated.

Quick reminder about the weekly claims process once you're approved: You'll file every Sunday for the previous week, and payments typically arrive within 2-3 business days if you have direct deposit set up. Make sure to answer all questions honestly.

Kennedy Morrison
•Do I file for the week I was unemployed or the current week? This is confusing.
0 coins
Grace Thomas
•You file for the week that just ended. So if you file on Sunday, you're reporting for the week that ended Saturday.

•what happens if you miss filing a weekly claim?

Chad Winthrope
Also don't forget about the waiting week. In Washington, your first payable week is actually your second week of unemployment. The first week is unpaid.
0 coins
Kennedy Morrison
•Wait, so even if I get approved quickly, I won't get paid for the first week?
0 coins
Chad Winthrope
•Exactly. It's called the waiting week and it's required by law. You still have to file the claim for that week though.

Just want to add - keep all your documentation organized. If they do request additional info, you want to be able to respond quickly. Delays in providing requested documents can really slow down the process.

Kennedy Morrison
•I've been keeping everything in a folder. Hopefully that's enough preparation.

Paige Cantoni
•That's smart! Also keep digital copies if possible in case they want electronic submissions.

UPDATE: I finally got through to Washington ESD using that Claimyr thing someone mentioned. Turns out my claim was held up because of a discrepancy in my wage information. Agent was able to explain exactly what they needed and I submitted it same day. Wish I had known about this weeks ago!

Kennedy Morrison
•That's great news! How long did it take to get the issue resolved once you submitted the additional info?
0 coins
Ellie Lopez
•They said 3-5 business days to process. At least now I know what's happening instead of just waiting in the dark.

•Glad it worked out for you! That's exactly why I recommend that service - getting actual answers makes all the difference.

For the original poster - the key things to watch for after applying: 1) Check your SAW account daily, 2) Respond quickly to any requests for information, 3) Don't file weekly claims until you're told to, 4) Keep your contact info current, 5) Be patient but persistent if you don't hear anything after 10 business days.
