When can I receive unemployment benefits after filing with Washington ESD?
I just filed my unemployment claim with Washington ESD last Tuesday and I'm wondering when I can actually expect to receive my first payment. My previous job ended three weeks ago but I waited to file because I thought I might get called back. Now I'm realizing that's not happening. I completed the initial application on the Washington ESD website and got a confirmation number, but I haven't heard anything since then. Do I need to do anything else or just wait? Also, when do the weekly claim filing periods start? I'm starting to stress about rent next week.

You'll typically get your first payment about 2-3 weeks after filing if there are no issues with your claim. The waiting period in Washington is one week, so your first payable week would be the week after you filed. Make sure you're filing your weekly claims every Sunday - that's when the new week opens up in the system.

•Thank you! I wasn't sure about the weekly filing schedule. So I should start filing this Sunday even though I just applied Tuesday?

•Yes, absolutely. You need to file for every week you're unemployed, starting with the week you filed your initial claim. Don't skip any weeks or you could lose benefits for those periods.

The timing really depends on whether your claim goes into adjudication or not. If Washington ESD needs to verify anything about your employment or the reason you left your job, it could take much longer. I've seen people wait 6-8 weeks when there are issues to resolve.

•How would I know if my claim is in adjudication? Is there somewhere I can check the status?

•Log into your eServices account on the Washington ESD website. If it's in adjudication, it will show that status. You might also get a letter or email asking for additional information.

I had to call Washington ESD to check on my claim status because the website wasn't updating properly. Took forever to get through though - I probably called 50 times before someone answered. If you're having trouble getting information, I actually found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to unemployment offices. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

•Is that service legit? I'm always suspicious of third-party services when it comes to government benefits.

•Yeah it's real. They just help you get through the phone queue - you still talk to the actual Washington ESD representative yourself. I was skeptical too but it worked for me when I couldn't get through on my own.

The whole system is so confusing! I filed three weeks ago and still haven't gotten anything. My claim says 'pending' but I have no idea what that means. I've been filing my weekly claims but the payment history shows $0 for everything. Starting to panic about bills.

•Pending usually means they're still processing your initial claim. Have you received any correspondence from Washington ESD asking for documents or additional information?

•I got one letter asking me to verify my identity, which I did online like two weeks ago. Nothing since then.

•Identity verification can take a while right now. They're being extra careful with fraud prevention. Keep filing your weekly claims though - when it gets approved you'll get back pay for all the weeks you filed.

Washington ESD is so slow compared to other states. My friend in Oregon got their first payment in 10 days. Here I am going on week 4 with nothing but 'under review' status. The phone lines are always busy too - it's like they don't want to help people.

•I feel you on the frustration. The call volume is insane right now. Have you tried calling early in the morning? Sometimes you can get through before 8 AM.

•I've tried every time of day. Even tried the 'call back' option but they never called back. Someone mentioned a service that helps with calling - might try that.

Make sure you're meeting the job search requirements too. In Washington you need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log. If you don't do this from the beginning, it could delay your payments even after your claim is approved.

•Wait, I need to start job searching immediately? I thought there was a grace period or something.

•Nope, the job search requirement starts with your first payable week. You can do the activities on WorkSourceWA.com or in person. Just make sure to document everything.

•Actually, some people might be exempt from job search requirements depending on their situation. If you're on standby waiting to be recalled, you might not need to search. Check your determination letter.

I'm in week 5 of waiting and finally got through to someone at Washington ESD yesterday. Turns out my employer contested my claim because they said I quit instead of being laid off. Now I have to go through an appeal process. Ugh. If your employer contests, it adds weeks to the process.

•Oh no, that's exactly what I was worried about. How do you know if your employer contests it?

•You'll get a determination letter in the mail explaining the decision. If it's denied, you have 30 days to appeal. The whole process is such a headache.

Pro tip: set up direct deposit if you haven't already. It's faster than waiting for a debit card to arrive in the mail. You can do it in your eServices account under payment options.

•Good point! I think I set that up when I filed but I should double-check.

The waiting is the worst part. I remember refreshing my account page constantly when I first filed. It took about 3 weeks for my first payment, but once it started coming it was regular every week. Hang in there!

•Same here. The anxiety during that first waiting period is terrible. But like you said, once it kicks in it's pretty reliable.

If you're really struggling financially while waiting, look into local food banks and emergency assistance programs. Many counties in Washington have programs to help with rent and utilities while you're waiting for unemployment to kick in.

•That's actually really helpful advice. I didn't think about local resources. Thank you!

I used Claimyr when I needed to check on my adjudication status and couldn't get through to Washington ESD. Worth every penny to not spend hours on hold. They got me connected to someone who could actually explain what was holding up my claim.

•How much does that service cost? I'm already strapped for cash.

•They have different options but honestly when you factor in the time saved and getting actual answers, it was worth it for me. Plus I got my benefits sorted out faster which made up for the cost.

Don't forget to keep track of any work you do while collecting unemployment. Even a few hours of part-time work needs to be reported on your weekly claim. It won't necessarily stop your benefits but you have to report it.

•Good to know. I might pick up some gig work while I'm waiting just to have something coming in.

The key is to be patient but persistent. Keep filing your weekly claims, respond to any requests for information immediately, and don't be afraid to call if something seems wrong. The system works but it takes time.

•Thank you everyone for all the advice! I feel much better about the process now. Going to keep filing weekly and try to be patient.

•You got this! We've all been through the waiting game. It gets easier once you know what to expect.

One more thing - if you do end up needing to call Washington ESD and can't get through, that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier really does work. I was skeptical at first but ended up using it twice to get claim issues resolved. Way better than spending entire days trying to get through on your own.

•I keep seeing people mention this service. Might have to check it out if my claim doesn't update soon.
