What is the time frame to apply for unemployment in Washington - missed deadline?
I lost my job two months ago and just found out I should have applied for unemployment benefits right away. I've been looking for work this whole time and burning through my savings. What's the actual deadline for filing a Washington ESD claim? Did I miss my chance completely or can I still apply now? I'm kicking myself for not knowing about this sooner.

You should apply ASAP! Washington ESD has a rule that you need to file within a reasonable time after becoming unemployed. Two months isn't necessarily too late but you'll lose those weeks of benefits you could have received. The sooner you apply the better.

•Thank you! I'm going to file today. Do you know if they'll ask why I waited so long?

•They might ask during the interview process, just be honest that you didn't know about the requirement. Lack of knowledge isn't disqualifying.

There's no hard deadline but you're losing money every week you don't file. I waited 3 weeks after my layoff and regretted it - that's $1,200 I'll never get back.

•Ugh that's exactly what I'm worried about. The bills are piling up and I could have been getting help this whole time.

You can file at any time but benefits only start from the week you actually file your claim. Washington ESD doesn't pay retroactively for weeks before you filed, even if you were eligible. The general rule is to file within the first week of unemployment.

•This is correct. I learned this the hard way when I waited a month to file thinking I'd find a job quickly.

•So I've basically lost 8 weeks of potential benefits? That's devastating.

•Unfortunately yes, but don't let that stop you from filing now. You still need the support going forward.

I had trouble getting through to Washington ESD when I first tried to file. The phone lines are always busy and their website kept crashing. I ended up using this service called Claimyr that helped me get connected to an actual agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Really? I've been dreading trying to call them. How much does something like that cost?

•It's worth it when you consider how much time you save not sitting on hold for hours. Plus you actually get to talk to someone who can help.

•Never heard of that but anything beats calling 100 times and getting hung up on.

THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN! I've been trying to get through for weeks and they just hang up on you. Two months is nothing - I know people who waited longer and still got approved. Don't let them intimidate you.

•Thanks for the encouragement. I'm definitely going to apply today no matter what.

•The anger is real but staying positive helps. The system is overwhelmed but it does work eventually.

Pro tip: when you file, make sure you have all your employment info ready - employer names, addresses, dates of employment, and your reason for separation. This will speed up the process and reduce the chance of delays.

•Good point. I'll gather all that info before I start the application.

•Also have your social security card and ID ready. The identity verification can be tricky.

I filed 6 months after losing my job and still got approved. The adjudicator asked why I waited and I explained I was caring for a sick family member. They understood and approved my claim. Don't give up hope!

•That's really encouraging to hear. Maybe I'm not completely out of luck.

•Good example of how individual circumstances matter. Washington ESD does consider valid reasons for delayed filing.

File online at secure.esd.wa.gov - it's way easier than calling. Just create your SecureAccess Washington account and follow the steps.

•I tried that but got confused by some of the questions. Do I need to complete it all in one session?

Sara Unger
•No you can save and come back to it. Just make sure you submit it within 30 days of starting.

Whatever you do, don't lie about when you became unemployed. They can verify employment dates and lying will disqualify you completely.

Issac Nightingale
•Definitely won't lie. I have all my termination paperwork with the exact dates.

Update on the Claimyr thing - I used them again last week to check on my claim status and got through in like 10 minutes. Saved me so much frustration compared to calling directly.

•Might have to try that. I've been calling for days with no luck.

•I'm definitely going to look into that if I run into issues with my application.

Just to clarify the timeline rules: Washington ESD expects you to file 'promptly' after becoming unemployed. There's no exact deadline but waiting months can raise questions. The key is filing as soon as you realize you need benefits.

Issac Nightingale
•That makes sense. I guess I just didn't realize unemployment was an option until my savings got low.

•A lot of people don't know their rights. Unemployment isn't welfare - you paid into this system through your taxes.

File today and start your weekly claims immediately. Even if there are issues with your initial claim, you want to establish that you're actively seeking benefits.

Issac Nightingale
•Good advice. I'll file the initial claim and then do the weekly claim right after.

The whole system is designed to discourage people from applying. They make it confusing on purpose so fewer people will file. Don't let them win!

•While the system has issues, it's more likely just overwhelmed than intentionally discouraging. Most people do get approved eventually.

•I'm trying to stay positive. At least I know now that I can still apply.

Once you file, be prepared for a possible phone interview. They might want to discuss your work history and reason for separation. It's not scary - just be honest and prepared.

•How long after filing do they usually schedule the interview?

•Mine was about 2 weeks later but it varies. You'll get a notice in your eServices account.

Also remember you need to be able and available for work and actively seeking employment. Keep a log of your job search activities.

•I've been applying to jobs but haven't been keeping detailed records. Should I start that now?

Justin Trejo
•Yes, start now. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week and you need to log them in WorkSourceWA.

I waited 6 weeks to file and had no issues. The adjudicator barely asked about the delay. Your situation sounds normal.

•That's reassuring. I think I was overthinking how big of a deal the delay would be.

If you do have trouble reaching Washington ESD during the process, seriously consider using Claimyr. It's been a game-changer for me and several others I know who needed to speak with someone about their claims.

•I bookmarked their site. Hopefully I won't need it but good to know it's there.

The bottom line is file now and don't stress about the delay. You're still within a reasonable timeframe and Washington ESD processes thousands of claims with various circumstances. Your situation isn't unusual.

One more thing - if you get denied for any reason, don't panic. You have appeal rights and many denials get overturned. Just follow the appeal process carefully.

•Hopefully it won't come to that but good to know I have options if needed.
