How long do you have to file for unemployment in Washington - missed deadline?
I got laid off from my warehouse job about 6 weeks ago and I'm just now realizing I should have filed for unemployment benefits right away. I kept thinking I'd find something quickly but the job market is brutal right now. Does anyone know how long you have to file for unemployment in Washington? Did I miss my chance completely or can I still file a claim with Washington ESD? I'm really stressing about this because I've been burning through my savings to pay rent.

You can still file! In Washington, you typically have up to one year from your separation date to file an initial claim. However, you'll only receive benefits from the week you actually file - you can't get backdated benefits for those 6 weeks you waited. File your claim online at esd.wa.gov as soon as possible.

•Oh thank god, I was panicking thinking I completely missed out. So I won't get those 6 weeks but I can still get benefits going forward?

•Exactly. Your benefit year starts when you file, not when you were laid off. The sooner you file, the sooner you can start receiving weekly payments.

•How long did it take for your claim to get approved after you filed?

•took about 3 weeks for mine to process, but that was because they had to verify my employment history

I've been trying to reach Washington ESD for weeks about my claim status and it's impossible to get through on the phone. The hold times are insane and I keep getting disconnected. Has anyone found a way to actually talk to someone there? I found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that helps people get through to Washington ESD agents - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Thinking about trying it since I'm getting nowhere with the regular phone number.

•Never heard of Claimyr but honestly anything beats sitting on hold for 4 hours just to get hung up on. How does it work?

•From what I understand, they handle the calling and waiting for you, then connect you when an agent picks up. Saves you from the endless hold times.

•I actually used Claimyr last month when I was stuck in adjudication. Worth every penny to finally talk to someone who could explain what was happening with my claim.

The Washington ESD website is pretty clear about filing deadlines, but here's what you need to know: File your initial claim ASAP. Even though you have up to a year, every week you wait is money you're leaving on the table. Also make sure you have your employment history ready - employer names, addresses, dates of employment, and reason for separation.

•Do I need pay stubs or anything like that when I file?

•Not usually for the initial filing, but have them ready in case Washington ESD requests them during the verification process. They'll ask for your SSN, employment history, and basic personal info.

•Also be prepared for the job search requirements once your claim is approved. You'll need to log job contacts weekly.

Wait I'm confused - is there really no way to get backpay for those weeks? That seems unfair if you didn't know you were supposed to file right away

•Unfortunately no, Washington ESD doesn't provide retroactive benefits for weeks before you file. The system assumes you weren't actively seeking benefits during that time.

•That's ridiculous. A lot of people don't realize they need to file immediately.

•It's frustrating but that's how it works in most states. The key is getting the word out to people when they first get laid off.

Just want to echo what others said about filing ASAP. I waited 3 weeks after my layoff and kicked myself for losing those benefit weeks. The process itself isn't too bad - took me about 20 minutes to complete the online application. Just make sure you have accurate dates and don't guess on employment information.

•Did you run into any issues during the application process?

•Only hiccup was when they couldn't verify one of my previous employers and I had to provide additional documentation. But that was resolved pretty quickly.

Pro tip: File your claim on Sunday night or early Monday morning. The system is less likely to crash and you'll avoid some of the peak traffic that happens during business hours.

•Good to know! I was planning to do it tonight after work anyway.

•Yeah the website definitely runs smoother outside of business hours in my experience.

btw once you file make sure you do your weekly claims every week even if your claim is still pending. missing those can mess up your benefit weeks

•Weekly claims? What are those exactly?

CaptainAwesome
•every week you have to log in and report if you worked or looked for work. its how they know to pay you

Amara Okafor
•Exactly - your weekly claim is due by Saturday night each week. You'll report any work performed, job contacts made, and verify you're able and available for work.

I feel you on the job market being brutal right now. Filed my unemployment claim 2 months ago and still looking. At least the benefits help keep me afloat while I search.

•How much can you typically expect to get in benefits?

Gabrielle Dubois
•Depends on your previous earnings but in Washington it's roughly 60-70% of your average weekly wage up to a maximum amount. You can estimate it on the Washington ESD website.

The Washington ESD customer service situation is honestly terrible right now. I've been trying to get through about my adjudication for weeks. Finally broke down and used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier - actually got connected to an agent in like 15 minutes. Wish I'd known about it sooner.

•Was it expensive to use Claimyr?

Dmitri Volkov
•It was worth it for me considering how much time I'd already wasted trying to call myself. They handled all the waiting and I just got a call when an agent was ready to talk.

Quick question - do you need to be a Washington resident to file for unemployment here? I worked in Washington but live across the border in Oregon.

•You file in the state where you worked, not where you live. So if you worked in Washington, you'd file with Washington ESD regardless of where you live.

•Perfect, thank you for clarifying that!

Man this thread is making me realize how much I don't know about unemployment. Got laid off last month and just filed last week. Sounds like I'm doing things in the right timeframe at least.

•At least you didn't wait 6 weeks like me! We're both learning as we go.

•True! Better late than never I guess. Good luck with your claim!

One thing to keep in mind - if you had multiple employers in the past 18 months, make sure you list ALL of them on your application. Washington ESD uses that information to calculate your benefit amount.

Liam Murphy
•I only had one job for the past 2 years, so that should be straightforward.

Carlos Mendoza
•That'll make it easier! Just make sure you have the exact dates and your employer's full business name.

The Washington ESD system can be confusing but once you get through the initial setup it's pretty manageable. The weekly claims become routine after a few weeks.

Liam Murphy
•That's reassuring. I'm going to start my application tonight.

•Good plan! Don't overthink it - just be honest and accurate with your information.

PSA: Make sure you're on the real Washington ESD website (esd.wa.gov) when you file. There are some scammy sites out there that look official but aren't.

Liam Murphy
•Good catch - I'll make sure I'm on the right site.

•Yeah, anything asking for payment upfront to 'help' you file is definitely a scam. The state application is free.

I'm in a similar boat - got laid off 4 weeks ago and just filed last week. The waiting is killing me but at least I know benefits are coming eventually.

Liam Murphy
•How long did they say it would take to process your claim?

Raj Gupta
•They said 3-4 weeks typically, but it can be longer if they need to verify employment or if there are any issues.

Just a heads up - keep records of everything. Screenshots of your weekly claims, copies of job applications, any correspondence with Washington ESD. It'll save you headaches if any issues come up.

The job search requirement in Washington is 3 job contacts per week once you're approved. Start keeping track of your applications now so you're ready.
0 coins
Liam Murphy
•3 per week doesn't sound too bad. Is there a specific way they want you to track them?
0 coins
TechNinja
•You log them in your weekly claim - employer name, contact method, position applied for, and date. Pretty straightforward.

Don't beat yourself up about waiting 6 weeks. A lot of people don't realize they need to file immediately. The important thing is you're doing it now.
