How long do I have to file unemployment in Washington - missed the deadline?
I got laid off from my warehouse job about 6 weeks ago and I'm just now realizing I should have filed for unemployment benefits immediately. I've been job hunting this whole time but nothing's panned out yet. How long do I have to file unemployment in Washington? Did I miss my chance to get benefits for the weeks I've already been unemployed? I'm really stressed about this because I'm behind on rent and need to know if I can still get help.

You can still file! In Washington, you generally have up to one year from your separation date to file for unemployment benefits. However, you won't get benefits for the weeks before you actually file your claim - those weeks are lost. The sooner you file, the better. You should apply online at secure.esd.wa.gov as soon as possible.

•Thank you! I'm going to file today. So I won't get anything for the 6 weeks I've already been unemployed?

•Correct, you can only get benefits starting from the week you file your claim. Those 6 weeks are unfortunately lost.

File ASAP! I made the same mistake and waited 3 weeks thinking I'd find something quick. Lost out on like $1,200 in benefits I could have gotten.

•Ugh that's exactly what I'm worried about. Going to file right now.

•Yeah don't wait any longer, every week you wait is money you're losing

I had trouble getting through to Washington ESD when I filed last year. Their phone lines are always busy and the website can be glitchy. If you run into issues, there's a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get connected to an actual agent. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Really saved me when I was stuck in the system.

•Thanks for the tip! Hopefully I won't need it but good to know there's help available.

•Never heard of Claimyr but anything that helps get through to Washington ESD sounds useful. Their customer service is terrible.

Just to clarify the timeline - you have up to 52 weeks (one year) from your last day of work to file an initial claim. But benefits are only paid for weeks after you file, not retroactively. Also, you'll need to have worked and earned wages in your base period to qualify. Make sure you have your employment history ready when you apply.

•I worked at the warehouse for 2 years so I should qualify. What documents do I need?

•You'll need your Social Security number, employment dates, employer contact info, and reason for separation. Having pay stubs helps too.

•Also make sure you know your employer's exact business name as it appears on your W-2 or pay stub. Washington ESD is picky about that stuff.

File online at secure.esd.wa.gov - it's way faster than calling. The system walks you through everything step by step. Just have your info ready and be patient if the site is slow.

•Already started the application! It's pretty straightforward so far.

•Yeah the online filing is actually not bad once you get started. Much better than trying to call them.

Don't feel bad about waiting 6 weeks - a lot of people don't realize they should file immediately. The system doesn't exactly advertise itself well. At least you're filing now instead of waiting even longer.

•Thanks, I definitely learned my lesson. If I ever get laid off again I'll file the next day.

•Same thing happened to me. I thought unemployment was only for people who couldn't find work at all, not for people actively job hunting.

One thing to keep in mind - after you file, you'll need to do weekly claims every week to keep getting benefits. Don't miss those deadlines or you'll lose benefits for that week too. Set a reminder on your phone or something.

•Good advice! When do I need to file my first weekly claim?
0 coins
Ethan Taylor
•Usually it's the week after you file your initial claim. Washington ESD will tell you the exact date when you complete your application.

•And you have to report any work or job offers during your weekly claims. Be honest about everything or you could get in trouble later.

The whole unemployment system is confusing honestly. I filed right away when I got laid off but then had to wait 3 weeks for my first payment because of some adjudication thing. Just be prepared that it might take a while to see money even after you file.

•How long did the whole process take for you from filing to getting paid?

Carmen Lopez
•About 4 weeks total. The waiting week plus the adjudication delay. But some people get paid faster if there are no issues with their claim.

I used Claimyr when my claim got stuck in adjudication hell. Took forever to get through to Washington ESD on my own but Claimyr got me connected to someone who could actually help. Worth checking out if you run into problems.

•Seems like a few people have mentioned Claimyr. I'll keep it in mind if I need help.

•How much does Claimyr cost? I'm broke and can't afford to pay for help getting my own benefits.

•They explain everything on their website. For me it was worth it to get my claim moving instead of being stuck for weeks.

Make sure you're looking for work while you file. Washington has job search requirements and you need to keep a log of where you apply. WorkSource WA can help with job search assistance too.

•I've been applying places already, just need to start keeping better track of it. How many jobs do I need to apply for each week?

Andre Dupont
•I think it's 3 job search activities per week but check with Washington ESD to be sure. They'll explain the requirements when you file.

Just file already! Every day you wait is money you're not getting. The application isn't that hard and you can always call if you need help with something.

The one year deadline is generous but those lost weeks really add up. I know someone who waited 2 months and lost out on like $4,000 in benefits. Don't let that be you!

•Yikes, that's a lot of money. Glad I'm filing now instead of waiting longer.

•Right? That's rent money, grocery money, everything. File as soon as you're unemployed, people!

Washington ESD is pretty good about processing claims once you get them filed. Just make sure all your info is accurate and complete. Any mistakes can delay your claim.

For anyone else reading this - file for unemployment THE DAY you lose your job or get laid off. Don't wait thinking you'll find something quickly. Even if you do find work fast, you'll have coverage for the gap.

At least you're filing now instead of never filing at all. Some people are too proud or don't think they qualify. Unemployment benefits are there for a reason - you paid into the system through your taxes.

•That's true, I did pay into it. No shame in using it when I need it.

Hope your claim gets processed quickly! The job market is tough right now so don't feel bad about needing unemployment benefits. That's what they're for.

Just wanted to follow up on Claimyr since a few people asked about it. They basically help you get through to Washington ESD when the lines are busy or you're stuck in the system. Really helpful when you're dealing with claim issues that need human help to resolve.
