How long can you apply for unemployment after being laid off in Washington

I got laid off from my job at a manufacturing company about 6 weeks ago and I'm just now thinking about filing for unemployment benefits. I've been trying to find work on my own but nothing's panned out yet. My friend said there might be a deadline for when you can apply after losing your job. Does anyone know how long you have to file for unemployment in Washington? I'm worried I might have waited too long and missed my chance.

You should be fine! In Washington, you can typically apply for unemployment benefits up to one year from when you became unemployed. However, there's a one-week waiting period before benefits start, and you won't get benefits for any weeks you don't file. The sooner you apply, the better since you can't get retroactive payments for weeks you didn't claim.

Thank you! That's a relief. I was panicking thinking I had completely missed out on benefits.

Wait, I thought you had to apply within 30 days? Are you sure about the one year thing?

The one year timeframe is correct, but don't wait any longer. You need to file your initial claim as soon as possible because Washington ESD only pays benefits from the week you file your claim forward. You can't get paid for the 6 weeks you've already been unemployed if you didn't file during those weeks. Also, you'll need to meet the job search requirements - 3 job contacts per week typically.

Ugh, so I've already lost 6 weeks of potential benefits? That's frustrating but I guess it's my own fault for not knowing.

Don't beat yourself up about it. A lot of people don't realize they need to file right away. At least you're getting started now!

I had a similar situation last year when I was laid off from my retail job. Took me about a month to apply because I thought I'd find something quickly. The Washington ESD website has all the info about deadlines, but yeah, you basically lose any weeks you don't file for. I used a service called Claimyr to help me get through to someone at Washington ESD when I had questions about my application - they have this system that calls for you and connects you when an agent is available. Check out claimyr.com if you run into issues getting through on the phone.

Thanks for the tip about Claimyr! I'll keep that in mind if I have trouble reaching someone.

How much does that service cost? Seems like something you'd have to pay for.

It's worth checking out their demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ to see how it works. When you're dealing with Washington ESD phone lines that are constantly busy, having help can be a lifesaver.

file ASAP!!! washington esd is already slow enough with processing claims, don't make it worse by waiting longer. also make sure you have all your employment info ready - dates, wages, reason for separation, etc.

Good point about having all the info ready. I'll gather my pay stubs and employment records before I start the application.

Just to clarify the timeline - you can establish a claim up to one year after your separation date, but benefits are only paid for weeks you actually file. So if you file today, your first payable week would be this week (after the waiting week). The 6 weeks you've been unemployed without filing are just lost unfortunately.

This is why I always tell people to file immediately when they lose their job, even if they think they'll find work quickly.

Yeah, lesson learned. I wish I had known this earlier but at least I know now.

When you do file, make sure you're honest about your separation reason. If you were laid off due to lack of work, that should be straightforward. But if there were any disciplinary issues or if you quit, that could affect your eligibility. Washington ESD will contact your employer to verify the separation details.

It was definitely a layoff due to company downsizing, so I should be good on that front. They laid off about 15 people total.

Yeah, mass layoffs are usually pretty clear cut for unemployment eligibility. You shouldn't have issues with that part.

Pro tip: when you file your weekly claims, do it on the same day each week. I always did mine on Sunday mornings. Also keep track of your job search activities because they might audit you and ask for proof of your job contacts.

Good advice! I'll set up a reminder to file on Sundays. What kind of proof do they want for job searches?

Keep a log with company names, positions applied for, dates, and method of contact. Screenshots of online applications, emails, etc. Washington ESD can ask for this info during an audit.

I'm going through the same thing right now! Got laid off 4 weeks ago and just filed last week. Kicking myself for not doing it sooner but at least we're both getting started now. The online application wasn't too bad, just took about 30 minutes.

How long did it take for your claim to get processed? I'm hoping it doesn't take too long since I really need the income.

Still waiting! It's been a week and it's still showing 'under review' in my account. Hoping to hear something soon.

Just a heads up - if you have any complications with your claim (like if Washington ESD needs additional info or if your employer contests it), the process can take longer. Some people get stuck in adjudication for weeks. That's when services like Claimyr become really helpful for actually getting through to talk to someone about your case status.

Hopefully mine will be straightforward since it was clearly a layoff, but I'll keep Claimyr in mind just in case.

I was stuck in adjudication for 3 weeks last year. Claimyr helped me get through to find out what documentation they needed. Probably saved me another few weeks of waiting.

Don't forget that you'll need to register with WorkSource Washington for the job search requirement. You can do that online at worksourcewa.com. It's required for receiving benefits unless you're on standby status.

I hadn't heard about WorkSource Washington before. Is that separate from the unemployment application?

Yes, it's a separate registration but it's required. You'll need to create a profile and use it to track your job search activities. It integrates with the unemployment system.

The Washington ESD website has a benefit calculator where you can estimate how much you'll receive based on your past wages. Might be worth checking out to get an idea of what to expect.

0 coins

That's helpful! I'll look for that calculator on their website. Thanks for all the info everyone, this has been really helpful.

Good luck with your application! The sooner you get it filed, the sooner you can start receiving benefits. Even though you missed those first 6 weeks, don't let that discourage you from filing now.

0 coins

Thanks! I'm going to file today. Better late than never I guess.

One more thing - make sure you file your weekly claims even if your initial claim is still being processed. You need to maintain those weekly filings to be eligible for benefits once your claim is approved.

0 coins

Got it, I'll make sure to keep up with the weekly filings. This is all new to me but I'm learning a lot from this thread.

The system can be confusing at first but you'll get the hang of it. The main thing is you're starting now rather than waiting even longer. Six weeks isn't ideal but it's not the end of the world either.

0 coins

Yeah, I'm trying to look at it that way. At least I'll have some income coming in while I continue job searching.

Exactly! And unemployment benefits can really help take some of the pressure off while you're looking for the right job rather than just taking anything out of desperation.
