How long can you wait to get unemployment - Washington ESD filing deadline?

I got laid off from my warehouse job about 6 weeks ago and have been putting off filing for unemployment because I thought I'd find something quickly. Now I'm realizing I should have applied sooner. Does Washington ESD have a deadline for how long you can wait before filing? I'm worried I might have missed my chance to get benefits for the weeks I've been unemployed. Has anyone else waited this long to file?

You can file up to one year from when you became unemployed, but you can't get benefits for weeks before you actually file your claim. So if you file today, your benefits would start from this week forward, not from 6 weeks ago when you were laid off.

So I basically lost 6 weeks of potential benefits? That's frustrating but I guess I understand the logic.

0 coins

Yeah unfortunately Washington ESD doesn't backdate claims automatically. The waiting week rule also means your first payable week would be next week if you file now.

0 coins

same thing happened to me last year, waited 2 months thinking id get a job fast and then realized i was being dumb. you live and learn i guess

0 coins

How long did it take for your claim to get approved after you finally filed?

0 coins

took about 3 weeks because they had to verify my employment history and stuff. would have been faster if i filed right away

I had a similar situation and found Claimyr really helpful for getting through to Washington ESD quickly. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how they help you reach an actual agent. Way better than trying to call on your own and getting the busy signal for hours.

0 coins

Is that a legitimate service? I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point.

0 coins

Yeah it's legit, I used it when my claim got stuck in adjudication. They basically handle the calling part so you don't have to sit on hold forever.

0 coins

Never heard of that but if it works it works. The Washington ESD phone system is absolutely brutal to deal with.

0 coins

File immediately! The longer you wait, the more money you're losing. Washington ESD doesn't care about your reasons for waiting - they only pay from the date you file forward. Also make sure you have all your employment info ready because they'll want details about your last 18 months of work history.

0 coins

What kind of employment info do they need exactly? I worked at a few different places over the past year and a half.

0 coins

Employer names, addresses, dates of employment, gross wages, and reason for separation. If you have old pay stubs that helps too.

0 coins

Also your Social Security number and driver's license info. The online application walks you through everything step by step.

0 coins

The system is so backwards - why can't they just backdate claims automatically? Other states do it. Washington ESD makes everything unnecessarily complicated.

0 coins

It's to prevent fraud and ensure people are actively looking for work during the weeks they claim benefits. If they backdated automatically, people could file months later and claim they were job searching the whole time.

0 coins

I guess that makes sense but it still sucks for people who don't know the rules.

0 coins

You should also know that there's a one-week waiting period before you can receive benefits. So even if you file today, your first payment would be for next week at the earliest.

0 coins

Wait, so I have to wait an additional week even after filing? This keeps getting worse.

0 coins

Yeah, it's called the waiting week. Everyone has to serve it, even if you file right after getting laid off.

0 coins

The waiting week is such BS. Like we're not struggling enough already.

0 coins

Don't feel too bad about waiting - a lot of people make this mistake. The important thing is to file now and start the process. Washington ESD usually processes new claims within 2-3 weeks if there are no issues.

0 coins

What kind of issues could come up? I was laid off due to company downsizing, nothing controversial.

0 coins

Should be straightforward then. Issues usually come up when there's a question about why you left your job or if there are discrepancies in your work history.

0 coins

Just to be clear - you have up to one year to file, but you can't get benefits for weeks before you file. So if you were laid off January 1st but don't file until March 1st, you can still get benefits going forward from March 1st, but you lose those January and February weeks forever.

0 coins

That's exactly my situation. I'm kicking myself for waiting so long.

0 coins

Live and learn. At least you're filing now instead of waiting even longer.

Pro tip: make sure you register with WorkSource WA as soon as you file your claim. It's required for most claimants and you need to be actively job searching to maintain eligibility.

0 coins

I've been job searching but not through WorkSource. Do I need to register there specifically?

0 coins

Yes, unless you're in a standby status or meet certain exemptions. Check the Washington ESD website for the specific requirements.

0 coins

The job search requirements are no joke. You need to document everything and be ready to provide proof if asked.

I waited 8 weeks to file last year and had to use Claimyr to get through to someone at Washington ESD to ask about my options. They confirmed what everyone here is saying - you can't get benefits for weeks before you file, period. Expensive lesson but at least I got benefits going forward.

0 coins

How much did you end up losing by waiting 8 weeks?

0 coins

About $3,200 in lost benefits. Really wish I had known about the filing deadline rule earlier.

0 coins

Ouch, that's a lot of money. Did Claimyr help you get through to Washington ESD quickly?

0 coins

Yeah, way faster than trying to call myself. Saved me hours of frustration with busy signals.

0 coins

File TODAY if you haven't already. Every day you wait is money lost. The application is online and takes maybe 30-45 minutes if you have all your info ready.

0 coins

You're right, I'm going to do it as soon as I get home from work today. Thanks for the push.

0 coins

Good luck! The hardest part is just getting started.

0 coins

The one year deadline is generous compared to some other benefits, but the no-backdating rule is harsh. It's designed to encourage people to file quickly rather than treating unemployment as a backup plan.

0 coins

I definitely learned that lesson the hard way. Should have filed immediately instead of being optimistic about finding work quickly.

0 coins

Don't beat yourself up too much. A lot of people make the same mistake, especially first-time filers.

0 coins

Just remember you'll need to file weekly claims once your initial claim is approved. Miss a week and you won't get paid for that week - another thing Washington ESD doesn't backdate.

0 coins

How do the weekly claims work? Do I have to call in or is it online?

0 coins

Online through your eServices account. You can also do it by phone but online is easier. Just make sure you file every week even if you worked some hours.

0 coins

Set a reminder on your phone for Sunday mornings. That's when the new week opens up for filing.

0 coins

The bottom line is Washington ESD has strict rules about timing and they don't make exceptions. File now, don't wait any longer, and learn from this experience for any future unemployment situations.

0 coins

Absolutely. I wish I had asked this question 6 weeks ago but better late than never I guess.

0 coins

At least you're asking now instead of waiting even longer. Some people wait months before filing.

0 coins

Good luck with your claim! The process can be frustrating but once you get through the initial application and any potential adjudication, the weekly claims are pretty straightforward.

0 coins

Thanks everyone for all the advice. I'm going to file tonight and hopefully get this process started.

0 coins

You got this! And remember, if you run into any problems getting through to Washington ESD, there are services like Claimyr that can help you reach an agent quickly.

0 coins

Just wanted to add one more thing - when you file your initial claim, make sure you answer all questions honestly and completely. Washington ESD will verify everything with your former employers, so any discrepancies can delay your claim. Also, keep copies of all your paperwork and document every step of the process. It'll save you headaches later if any issues come up. The system isn't perfect but it does work once you get through the initial hurdles.
