How long after losing job can you apply for Washington ESD unemployment benefits?
I got laid off from my warehouse job two weeks ago and I'm just now thinking about filing for unemployment. Is there a deadline for when you have to apply after losing your job? I've been looking for work but nothing yet and my savings are running low. Can I still file with Washington ESD or did I wait too long? Also does the timing affect how much I might get or when payments start?

You can still file! There's no specific deadline but you should apply as soon as possible because benefits don't pay retroactively to when you lost your job - they only start from when you file your claim. So those two weeks you waited, you won't get paid for unfortunately.

•Oh no, so I lost two weeks of benefits? That's like $800 I could have gotten. Should I still file now or is it not worth it?

•Definitely still file! You'll get benefits going forward. Just don't wait any longer or you'll lose more weeks.

The general rule is to file within the first week after losing your job if possible. Washington ESD starts counting your benefit year from when you file, not when you were laid off. You have to file weekly claims to continue receiving benefits, so the sooner you start the process the better.

•What's a benefit year? And how do weekly claims work?

Oliver Becker
•Your benefit year is the 52-week period during which you can collect unemployment benefits. Weekly claims are what you file every week to certify you're still unemployed and looking for work.

I waited almost a month before filing last year because I thought I'd find something quick. Big mistake - lost out on almost $1,200 in benefits. The process takes time too, mine took 3 weeks to get approved so I was really hurting financially by then.

•3 weeks to get approved? Why so long?

•My claim went into adjudication because my employer contested it. Had to provide documentation and wait for them to review everything.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to file your claim or check on status, I found this service called Claimyr that helps you actually reach an agent. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting hung up on.

•Is that legit? Sounds too good to be true with how impossible it is to reach anyone at ESD.

•Yeah it's real, they basically call for you and connect you when an agent picks up. Worked for me when I needed to resolve an issue with my claim.

TWO WEEKS?? I've been calling Washington ESD for FIVE WEEKS trying to get through about my adjudication issue and can't reach anyone. The phone system is absolutely broken. How are people supposed to get help when the system doesn't work?

•Five weeks? What happened with your claim?

•They flagged something about my separation from my last job and I can't get anyone to explain what documentation they need. Meanwhile I'm not getting paid anything.

•That's exactly the kind of situation where Claimyr would help - getting through to resolve adjudication issues.

Make sure when you file that you have all your employment information ready - employer names, addresses, dates of employment, and reason for separation. If you're missing info it can delay your claim processing.

•I have most of that but I'm not sure about exact dates for a job I had 2 years ago. Will that be a problem?

•They typically only ask about employment in the last 18 months, so you should be fine. Just be as accurate as possible with what they do ask for.

also remember you have to do job searches every week and keep a log. they can audit you and if you dont have proof youre looking for work they'll make you pay back benefits

Paolo Marino
•How many job searches do you need to do per week?

LunarLegend
•i think its 3 per week minimum but check with ESD to be sure

Actually it's 3 job search activities per week in Washington, and you need to keep detailed records of each one - company name, position applied for, date, and method of contact. You don't submit this with your weekly claim but you must keep records in case of an audit.

•What counts as a job search activity?

•Applying for jobs, attending job fairs, networking events, interviews, creating profiles on job sites - there's a full list on the WorkSourceWA website.

I applied 6 months after being laid off and still got benefits, so don't worry too much about the timing. The bigger issue is just that you won't get backpay to your actual layoff date.

•That's reassuring. Did your claim get approved quickly?

•Yeah about 2 weeks which seemed pretty normal. No issues with my employer or anything though.

One thing I learned - even if you think you might find work soon, file anyway. You can always stop claiming if you get a job, but if you don't file and time passes, those weeks are gone forever.

•Good point. I kept thinking I'd find something in a few days but here we are two weeks later.

•Exactly! The job market is tougher than people think right now. Better to have the safety net in place.

Don't forget you'll also need to register with WorkSourceWA as part of the process. It's required for most claimants and helps with the job search requirement tracking.

•Is that a separate website or part of the ESD application?

Amina Bah
•Separate site - WorkSourceWA.com. The ESD application will tell you when and how to register there.

My cousin waited like 3 months to apply because he was embarrassed about being on unemployment. By the time he filed he was in really bad shape financially. Don't let pride get in the way - you paid into this system through your paychecks.

•Yeah I felt weird about it at first too but you're right, I paid into it.

•Exactly! It's not welfare, it's insurance you already paid for.

Still can't believe how broken the phone system is. I finally got through last week using some service a friend recommended - Claimyr or something like that. They actually got me connected to an agent after weeks of trying on my own.

•Was it worth it? I might need help if my claim gets complicated.

•Honestly yes, saved me so much frustration. My adjudication got resolved the same day I talked to the agent.

pro tip - file early in the morning on sunday when the system resets for the week, tends to be faster

Just to summarize for OP: File as soon as possible, benefits start from filing date not layoff date, be prepared with employment history, register with WorkSourceWA, and do your weekly claims and job searches. Two weeks isn't too late but don't wait any longer.

Paolo Marino
•Perfect summary, thank you! Starting my application right now.

•Good luck! The process can seem overwhelming at first but it gets routine once you get into the rhythm of weekly claims.

i waited 6 weeks because i thought unemployment was only for people who got fired not laid off... learned that was wrong the hard way

Paolo Marino
•Oh wow, I didn't know there was a difference in how they handle layoffs vs being fired.
0 coins
Omar Zaki
•layoffs usually qualify you right away, being fired for cause can disqualify you depending on the reason

The waiting period thing is real though - even after you file it can take 1-2 weeks for your first payment depending on how quickly they process everything. So the sooner you file the sooner that clock starts ticking.

•So I'm looking at potentially a month before I see any money? That's tight.

•Could be less if everything goes smoothly, but yeah budget for that possibility. That's why people say file immediately.

Also if you do any side work or gig work while claiming you have to report that income on your weekly claims. Don't try to hide it because they cross-reference with tax records.

•I was thinking about doing some DoorDash while looking for work. How does that affect benefits?
0 coins
CosmicCrusader
•You can still do gig work but they'll reduce your weekly benefit by whatever you earn over a small threshold. Just be honest about it when you file your weekly claims.

Update on the Claimyr thing - I used them again this week when I had questions about reporting part-time work and it was just as smooth as last time. Really wish I'd known about it months ago when I was spending entire days trying to call ESD.
