How long after job loss can you file for unemployment - Washington ESD timing rules?

I got laid off from my warehouse job two weeks ago and I'm just now thinking about filing for unemployment. My friend said there might be a deadline or something? How long after losing your job can you still file with Washington ESD? I've been putting it off because the whole process seems complicated but bills are piling up and I need to get this sorted out. Does anyone know if I waited too long or if there's still time to file?

You're fine! There's no strict deadline for filing after job loss, but you should file as soon as possible because benefits only start from the week you actually file your claim. You won't get back-dated benefits for the two weeks you waited. The sooner you file, the sooner your weekly benefit amount kicks in.

Oh thank god, I was worried I missed some cutoff date. So I should file this week then?

0 coins

Absolutely, file today if you can. Go to esd.wa.gov and start your initial application. You'll need your last employer's info and your social security number.

0 coins

Yeah there's no deadline but like the other person said, you're missing out on money every week you don't file. I waited a month after I got fired and I kick myself for not filing sooner.

0 coins

A whole month? That must have been expensive...

0 coins

Cost me about $1200 in benefits I could have gotten. Don't make my mistake!

0 coins

I had the same worry when I got laid off. Filed 3 weeks after losing my job and it was totally fine. The key thing is that your 'benefit year' starts when you file, not when you lost your job. So file ASAP to start that clock ticking. The application itself isn't too bad once you get started.

How long did your claim take to get approved after you filed?

0 coins

Took about 2 weeks for me, but that was before they had all the COVID backlog issues. Should be faster now.

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD to check on your claim status, I used claimyr.com recently and it was super helpful. They have this system that calls Washington ESD for you and gets you connected to an actual person. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

Wait I thought you had to file within like 30 days or something? My cousin in Oregon said she had to file right away or she'd lose eligibility. Is Washington different?

0 coins

Every state has different rules. In Washington, there's no filing deadline after job loss. You just lose the weeks you don't file for.

0 coins

Good to know! I always get confused about which rules apply where.

0 coins

The real question is whether you can even get through to file your claim! I've been trying to call Washington ESD for days and either get busy signals or get disconnected after waiting on hold forever. Their website crashes half the time too.

0 coins

Is it really that bad? Should I try filing online or calling?

0 coins

Online is usually better than calling. The website can be slow but it's more reliable than the phone lines.

0 coins

If you do need to talk to someone at Washington ESD, that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier really does work. They basically redial for you until they get through, then connect you to the rep. Saved me hours of frustration.

0 coins

Thanks everyone! I'm going to file online tonight. One more question - do I need anything special from my employer or can I just use my last paystub?

0 coins

You'll need your employer's business name, address, and phone number. Your last paystub should have most of that info. Also helpful to have your start and end dates of employment.

0 coins

If you have any paperwork from when you were laid off (like a termination letter or WARN notice), that can be helpful too but not required.

0 coins

Just a heads up - even though there's no deadline to file, there IS a deadline to appeal if Washington ESD denies your claim for any reason. You only get 30 days to appeal a denial, so don't sleep on that if it happens.

0 coins

Good to know. Why would they deny a claim if you got laid off though?

0 coins

Sometimes there are issues with how the employer reports the separation, or questions about whether you're actively looking for work. Usually gets sorted out but the appeal deadline is strict.

0 coins

I filed 6 weeks after getting laid off and had no problems. Just lost those 6 weeks of benefits. The hardest part was figuring out all the job search requirements once I started getting benefits.

0 coins

What are the job search requirements? Do I need to apply to a certain number of jobs per week?

0 coins

Yeah, you need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log. Washington ESD explains it all when you file your weekly claims.

0 coins

And you have to register with WorkSource Washington within 30 days of filing your claim, unless you have a definite return-to-work date.

The Washington ESD system is so much better now than it was during COVID. I filed in 2020 and it was a nightmare - took months to get benefits. Now it's pretty straightforward if you have all your info ready.

0 coins

That's reassuring! I was worried about horror stories I heard from a few years ago.

0 coins

Yeah the system got completely overwhelmed back then. Much more stable now.

0 coins

Pro tip: file your claim on a Sunday or Monday if possible. The website is usually less busy then and you're less likely to run into technical issues.

0 coins

Thanks for the tip! I'll file tomorrow (Sunday) evening.

0 coins

Good thinking. And once you file, you'll need to file your weekly claims every week to keep getting benefits. Don't forget about that part!

0 coins

I'm in a similar situation - got let go 3 weeks ago and finally ready to file. Does anyone know if the weekly benefit amount is based on your last job or all jobs in the past year?

0 coins

It's based on your earnings in the 'base period' which is usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters before you file. So it looks at more than just your last job.

0 coins

That's actually better for me since I had a higher paying job earlier in the year before taking the one I just lost.

0 coins

Whatever you do, don't wait any longer. I have a friend who waited 2 months thinking unemployment was 'giving up' and she regretted not filing sooner. It's YOUR money that you paid into the system through payroll taxes.

0 coins

Yeah I had that same mentality at first but bills don't care about pride lol

0 coins

Exactly! You earned those benefits, don't feel guilty about claiming them.

0 coins

One thing I learned the hard way - if you run into any issues with your claim or need to talk to Washington ESD about something specific, don't waste time trying to call them directly. I spent literally days trying to get through on their main line. Finally used Claimyr and got connected to a rep in under an hour. Game changer for dealing with unemployment bureaucracy.

0 coins

Is that like a paid service? How much does it cost?

0 coins

It's worth whatever they charge just for the time savings alone. Check out their demo video to see how it works - way better than sitting on hold for hours.

0 coins

I'll keep that in mind if I run into problems. Hopefully the online filing goes smoothly though.

0 coins

Filed 4 weeks after my layoff and everything went fine. The waiting week is the killer though - you don't get paid for your first week of unemployment even after you're approved.

0 coins

Wait, there's a waiting week? So even if I file right away I won't get paid for the first week?

0 coins

Correct. Washington has a one-week waiting period. So you file weekly claims but the first week is unpaid. Every week after that gets paid if you're eligible.

0 coins

That's why it's even more important to file ASAP - you're already losing one week, don't lose more by waiting to file.

0 coins

The timing doesn't matter as much as having all your employment info ready. Make sure you have dates of employment, reason for separation, and employer contact info for ALL jobs in the past 18 months, not just your most recent one.

0 coins

Good point. I had 3 different jobs this year so I should gather info for all of them.

0 coins

Exactly. Washington ESD will want to know about all of them to calculate your benefit amount correctly.

0 coins

File today, file tomorrow, just FILE! Every week you wait is money out of your pocket. I see people on here all the time who waited months and then regret it. There's literally no benefit to waiting.

0 coins

Message received loud and clear! Filing tonight for sure.

0 coins

This! I don't understand why people overthink it. Just file the claim and let Washington ESD sort out the details.

0 coins

Anyone else think it's weird that they don't backdate benefits? Like if you lost your job 2 weeks ago and file today, you just lose those 2 weeks forever. Seems unfair.

0 coins

I think the logic is that you have to actively file to show you're ready and able to work. If you wait weeks to file, how do they know you were actually looking for work during that time?

0 coins

I guess that makes sense from a policy perspective, but still feels harsh for people who don't know the rules.

0 coins

That's why forums like this are so helpful! Spreading the word about filing ASAP.

0 coins

Update: Just filed my claim online! Took about 30 minutes and the website worked fine. Thanks everyone for pushing me to do it sooner rather than later. Now I wait to see if it gets approved.

0 coins

Great job! You should get a confirmation email and then typically hear back within 1-2 weeks about your eligibility.

0 coins

Don't forget to file your first weekly claim this weekend even if you haven't heard back about approval yet.

0 coins

And if you need to check on the status or have questions, remember that Claimyr option I mentioned. Much easier than trying to get through to Washington ESD directly.

0 coins

Congrats on filing! You made the right call getting it done quickly. Just want to add one more thing for anyone else reading this thread - if you're worried about the complexity of the application, don't be. Washington ESD's online system walks you through it step by step and you can save your progress if you need to take a break to gather documents. The hardest part is usually just getting started, but once you begin the process it's pretty straightforward. And like everyone said, every day you wait is potential money lost, so don't overthink it!
