How long can you wait before filing for unemployment with Washington ESD?
I got laid off from my warehouse job about 6 weeks ago and have been trying to find work on my own, but it's getting really tight financially. I keep hearing different things about deadlines for filing unemployment claims. Is there a cutoff for how long you can wait before applying with Washington ESD? I didn't want to file right away because I thought I'd find something quickly, but now I'm worried I might have waited too long. Can anyone tell me if there's a time limit on when you have to file your initial claim?

You haven't waited too long! Washington ESD doesn't have a strict deadline for filing your initial claim, but the sooner you file the better. Your benefit year starts from when you actually file, not from when you became unemployed. So you're essentially losing potential benefit weeks by waiting.

•That's a relief! So I can still file now even though it's been 6 weeks?

•Yes absolutely. File as soon as possible though - every week you wait is a week of benefits you can't get back.

Actually there IS a time limit - you have to file within one year of your separation date. After that, you can't establish a new benefit year with those wages. But 6 weeks is nothing, you're fine.

•One year seems like a really long time though. Why would anyone wait that long?

•You'd be surprised. Some people don't know they qualify, or they find temporary work that doesn't work out, or they're dealing with other life stuff.

I was in a similar situation last year and was struggling to get through to Washington ESD on the phone to ask questions before filing. The wait times were insane. I ended up using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get connected to an actual ESD agent without waiting on hold for hours. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Made the whole process so much easier.

•How does that work exactly? I've been dreading trying to call them.

•Basically they handle the calling part for you and get you connected to a real person at ESD. Way less stressful than sitting on hold all day.

•Interesting, never heard of that before. Did it actually work for you?

The real issue isn't when you CAN file, it's that you're missing out on money every week you don't file. Even if you get a job next week, you should still file for the weeks you were unemployed.

•Wait, I can file for back weeks even if I get a job soon?

•You can file for the weeks you were unemployed, but only going back to when you actually filed your initial claim. That's why everyone's telling you to file NOW.

Just make sure you have all your employment info ready when you file. Last employer's name, address, dates of employment, reason for separation, etc. The online application will ask for all that stuff.

Freya Larsen
•Good point, I should gather all that before I start the application.

•Also your Social Security card and ID. Don't start the application without having everything ready or you might have to start over.

I waited 3 months to file because I was embarrassed about being unemployed. Biggest mistake ever - lost out on like $4,000 in benefits that I could have really used. Don't make my mistake!

•Wow, that's a lot of money to lose. I definitely don't want to make that same mistake.

One more thing - when you do file, make sure you're honest about your job search efforts. Washington ESD requires you to be actively looking for work and you'll need to log your job search activities.

Freya Larsen
•I have been looking, just not keeping detailed records. Should I start doing that now?

Omar Zaki
•Yes, start keeping a log of where you apply, when, what type of job, etc. You'll need to report this information with your weekly claims.

•The job search requirements are pretty specific too. Check the Washington ESD website for the exact requirements in your area.

File online at secure.esd.wa.gov if you can. It's usually faster than trying to do it over the phone, and you can do it anytime instead of waiting for business hours.

•Is the online system pretty straightforward to use?

StarStrider
•Yeah, it walks you through step by step. Just make sure you have a good internet connection and plenty of time to complete it without rushing.

Quick question - did you quit or were you actually laid off? Because if you quit without good cause, you might have to wait several weeks before you can receive benefits due to a disqualification period.

•I was definitely laid off due to company downsizing. They gave me a letter explaining the layoff.

Chloe Taylor
•Perfect, that letter will be helpful to have when you file. Keep it with your records.

this whole system is so confusing why cant they just make it simple

•I agree it can be overwhelming, but once you get through the initial filing it gets easier. The weekly claims are pretty straightforward.

•At least Washington's system is better than some other states I've heard about.

I filed 8 weeks after getting laid off and had no problems. Don't stress too much about the timing, just get it done. The sooner you file, the sooner you can start receiving benefits.

•Thanks, that makes me feel better about waiting this long.

•Just remember you still need to do your weekly claims even while you're job searching. Don't miss those deadlines.

Make sure you also sign up for WorkSource services. I think it's required now and they have job search resources that might help you find work faster.

•Is that something I do at the same time as filing for unemployment?

•I think you can register separately, but they'll probably tell you about it when you file your claim. Check worksourcewa.com

@OP - seriously though, if you run into any issues getting through to Washington ESD after you file, that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier saved me so much frustration. Sometimes you need to talk to someone about your claim status or if there are any issues, and getting through normally can take forever.

•How much does something like that cost though?

Diego Flores
•I don't want to get into specific costs here, but for me it was worth it to avoid the stress of calling over and over. Check their website for details.

The most important thing is just to file NOW. Stop overthinking it. Every day you wait is money you're not getting.

I waited 2 months because I thought unemployment was only for people who got fired, not laid off. Wish someone had told me sooner that layoffs definitely qualify.
0 coins
Freya Larsen
•Yeah, I wasn't sure about that either initially. Glad to know layoffs definitely count.

•Layoffs, reductions in force, plant closures - all of those typically qualify for unemployment benefits.

Just a heads up that after you file, it might take a week or two before you get your first payment. Don't panic if it doesn't show up immediately.
0 coins
Freya Larsen
•Good to know! I was hoping it would be faster but I guess that's pretty normal.
0 coins
Carmen Ortiz
•Yeah the first payment usually takes longer because they have to process everything and verify your eligibility.

Whatever you do, don't wait any longer! I know someone who waited almost a year because they kept thinking they'd find work 'next week' and when they finally filed, they could barely get any benefits because their wages were so old.
0 coins
Freya Larsen
•That sounds like a nightmare. Definitely filing today for sure.

Zoe Papadakis
•Yeah that one year rule is real. After 12 months those wages basically don't count anymore for benefit calculations.

Good luck OP! The Washington ESD website has pretty clear instructions for filing. Don't let the bureaucracy intimidate you - you paid into this system and you deserve the benefits.

•And remember, if you need help getting through to ESD later on, that Claimyr option is there. Sometimes having that backup really helps with peace of mind.

•I'll definitely keep that in mind. Thanks again everyone!
