How long can you wait to file unemployment claim with Washington ESD?
I got laid off from my warehouse job about 6 weeks ago and have been putting off filing for unemployment because I thought I'd find something quickly. Now I'm realizing I need to get this started but I'm worried I waited too long. Does Washington ESD have a deadline for how long you can wait to file your initial claim? Will I lose out on benefits for those weeks I didn't file? I'm kicking myself for not doing this sooner but I really thought I'd be back to work by now.

You can file your initial claim anytime but you'll only get benefits starting from the week you file, not retroactively. Washington ESD doesn't pay for weeks before you submit your application. The sooner you file the better.

•So I basically lost 6 weeks of potential benefits? That's like $2000+ down the drain...

•Unfortunately yes, but don't beat yourself up about it. File today so you don't lose any more weeks.

There's no deadline to file your initial claim but like the other poster said, you can only get benefits from the week you actually file forward. I made the same mistake and waited 3 weeks thinking I'd find work fast.

•Did you have any trouble with the application process after waiting? I'm worried they'll ask why I waited so long.

•Nope, they don't really care when you file as long as you meet the other requirements. Just be honest about your separation date.

I used Claimyr when I had trouble getting through to Washington ESD about my claim timing. The service at claimyr.com helped me reach an agent who explained the rules clearly. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Really helped me understand what I could and couldn't get retroactively.

•Never heard of that service before but might be worth checking out. Washington ESD phone lines are impossible to get through on.

•I'll look into that, thanks. I'm definitely going to need to talk to someone about my situation.

Just to be clear - there's no time limit on FILING but there is a limit on collecting. You have to file weekly claims every week once you start or you'll lose those weeks too. Don't make the mistake of filing and then not following up with your weeklies.

•Good point, I definitely don't want to mess up again. How often do you have to file the weekly claims?
0 coins
Sydney Torres
•Every week, usually Sunday through the following Saturday. You can file starting Sunday for the previous week.

•And you have to do job searches too - 3 per week I think? Make sure you keep track of those.

ugh this system is so confusing why cant they just make it simple

•I agree it's not intuitive but once you get the hang of it, it becomes routine.

•still think they should pay retroactive tho if you lost your job weeks ago

The 6 weeks you waited isn't the end of the world. Focus on getting your claim filed now and make sure you understand all the requirements going forward. Washington ESD has pretty clear rules once you know what they are.

•You're right, I need to stop dwelling on it and just get it done. Filing today for sure.

•That's the right attitude. I waited 2 months to file because I was embarrassed about being laid off. Wish I hadn't waited so long but you live and learn.

Does anyone know if there are exceptions to the no-retroactive-pay rule? Like if you were in the hospital or something?

Dylan Fisher
•There might be some very limited exceptions for things like hospitalization but I'm not sure of the specifics. You'd have to ask Washington ESD directly.

•That's another good reason to use something like Claimyr to actually reach an agent. They can tell you about any exceptions that might apply.

I'm in a similar situation - got laid off 4 weeks ago and have been dragging my feet. This thread is the push I needed to finally file. Thanks everyone.

•At least you're only 4 weeks behind instead of 6! We can both file today and stop procrastinating.

•Deal! Let's do this. Better late than never I guess.

Just remember that even though you can't get retroactive benefits, you still need to report your separation date accurately. Don't try to fudge the dates or you'll get in trouble for fraud.

Kelsey Hawkins
•Definitely won't lie about dates. I have all my termination paperwork anyway so the dates are clear.

•Good. Honesty is always the best policy with Washington ESD. They can verify employment dates anyway.

The system really should send you reminders or something when you lose your job. Not everyone knows they need to file right away.

•That would be nice but employers are supposed to give you information about filing for unemployment when they lay you off.

•Mine didn't give me anything helpful, just said 'file for unemployment' with no details about timing.

I waited 8 weeks to file because I was convinced I'd find work quickly. Lost almost $3000 in benefits. Don't make my mistake - file as soon as you're unemployed even if you think you'll find work fast.

•Ouch, that's even worse than my situation. I guess a lot of people make this mistake.

•Yeah it's more common than you'd think. Pride and optimism can be expensive!

At least Washington ESD lets you file online now. Used to have to go to the office in person which was a nightmare.

Dylan Fisher
•True, the online system is much better even if it's not perfect. Can file your initial claim and weekly claims all online.

Natalia Stone
•Yeah and you can check your claim status online too instead of having to call all the time.

Quick question - if I file today will I get benefits for this week or do I have to wait until next week?
0 coins
Sydney Torres
•You'll get benefits starting from the week you file, but there's usually a one-week waiting period for your first payment. So you file this week but might not see money for 2-3 weeks depending on processing.

•Got it, thanks. Better to start the process now than keep waiting.

Is there a maximum amount of time you can collect unemployment? I know there's no deadline to file but what about collecting?
0 coins
Dylan Fisher
•Regular unemployment benefits last up to 26 weeks in Washington. Extensions sometimes available during high unemployment periods but that's rare.

Selena Bautista
•26 weeks should be plenty of time to find something. Hopefully I won't need all of it.

I called Washington ESD last week using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and it actually worked! Got through to an agent in about 20 minutes instead of the usual busy signal. Worth checking out if you need to talk to someone about your timing questions.

•That's good to know. I'll definitely look into Claimyr if I run into issues with my application.

•The agent I talked to was really helpful explaining the rules. Much better than trying to figure it out from the website alone.

Does anyone know if the job search requirement starts immediately or if there's a grace period when you first file?
0 coins
Dylan Fisher
•Job search requirements start the first week you're eligible for benefits. Usually 3 job contacts per week but check your claim for the exact requirement.

•Thanks, I'll make sure to start tracking my job searches right away.

this whole thread has been super helpful! I was also putting off filing and now I know I need to do it ASAP. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences.

•Glad it helped you too! Sometimes you need to hear from people who made the same mistakes to learn from them.

•Exactly! Better to learn from others' mistakes than make them yourself.

Final reminder for anyone reading this - don't wait to file! Even if you think you'll find work quickly, file for unemployment right away. You can always stop collecting if you find a job, but you can't go back and collect for weeks you didn't file.

•Perfect summary. I'm filing today and will recommend the same to anyone else in my situation.

I'm in the same boat as many of you - got laid off 3 weeks ago and kept thinking "I'll find something next week" so I didn't file. Reading all these responses makes it clear I need to stop procrastinating and file today. It's frustrating that Washington ESD doesn't allow retroactive benefits, but I guess that's just how the system works. Better to cut my losses now and get the process started rather than lose even more weeks. Thanks for all the helpful info about weekly claims and job search requirements - definitely things I need to keep in mind once I get my claim going.
