What is a UI number for unemployment in Washington ESD system?
I'm trying to file my weekly claim on the Washington ESD website and they keep asking for my UI number. I have no idea what this is or where to find it. I got approved for unemployment benefits last month but I don't see this number anywhere in my paperwork. Is this the same as my claim confirmation number? Really confused and don't want to mess up my weekly filing.

Your UI number is your Unemployment Insurance identification number that Washington ESD assigns to every claimant. It should be on your monetary determination letter or your initial claim confirmation. It's usually 8-10 digits long and starts with the letters 'UI' followed by numbers.

•Thanks! I found a letter that has UI followed by numbers. Is this what I enter when they ask for my UI number?

•Yes exactly! That's your UI number. You'll need it for filing weekly claims and any time you contact Washington ESD about your claim.

•If you can't reach Washington ESD by phone, try logging into your SecureAccess Washington account. Your UI number should be displayed on your claim summary page.

I had the same problem a few weeks ago. Couldn't get through to Washington ESD no matter how many times I called. Someone on here recommended Claimyr (claimyr.com) and they actually got me connected to an agent who helped me find my UI number. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Made the whole process so much easier than sitting on hold for hours.

•How does that work exactly? Do you have to pay for it?

•It's a service that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents faster. Way better than trying to call yourself and getting disconnected constantly.

•Interesting, I've never heard of this but might try it if I can't get through again

Update: I found my UI number on the monetary determination letter like someone suggested. But now I'm confused because there are actually two different numbers on there. One says 'Claim Number' and one says 'UI Number' - which one do I use for weekly claims?

•Use the UI Number for weekly claims. The Claim Number is different and used for other purposes like appeals or correspondence.

•I always get these mixed up too. Washington ESD should make this clearer in their instructions.

The UI number is basically your unemployment account number with Washington ESD. Think of it like your social security number but specifically for unemployment benefits. You'll need it for pretty much everything related to your claim - weekly filings, checking payment status, talking to agents, etc.

•That makes sense. Should I write it down somewhere safe so I don't lose it again?

•Definitely keep it handy. I keep mine saved in my phone notes so I always have it when filing my weekly claims.

•Good idea. I screenshot my monetary determination letter and keep it in my phone for quick reference.

•Same here! You'd think after doing this multiple times I'd remember but nope.

•At least now with everything online it's easier to find in your SecureAccess account

Washington ESD really needs to make this clearer in their initial paperwork. I've helped three friends find their UI numbers and every single one was confused about what it was and where to find it. The system is confusing enough without having to hunt for basic information.

•Totally agree. The whole process is intimidating when you're already stressed about being unemployed.

•They should send a separate card or something with just your UI number on it, like how banks send you your account number

•That's actually a really good idea. Would save so much confusion.

Pro tip: if you're having trouble finding your UI number and can't get through to Washington ESD, try checking any emails they sent you when you first filed. Sometimes they include it in the confirmation emails.

•Good point! I found mine in an old email from when I first applied.

•Wish I'd thought of that before spending 2 hours on hold yesterday

For anyone still struggling to reach Washington ESD about their UI number, I had success using Claimyr recently. Got connected to an agent in about 15 minutes instead of the usual hours of busy signals. They were able to verify my UI number and help with a few other questions I had about my claim status.

•How reliable is that service? I'm always skeptical of third-party stuff when it comes to government benefits.

•I was skeptical too but it worked exactly as advertised. They don't ask for any personal info, just help you get through to the actual Washington ESD agents.

•Might have to try this. I've been trying to reach them about an adjudication issue for weeks.

Your UI number should also be on any payment stubs or direct deposit notifications you receive from Washington ESD. I always check there first before digging through all my paperwork.

•That's where I found mine! It's on the payment detail in my bank account.

•Good to know for next time. I never thought to check my bank records.

Just want to add that your UI number stays the same even if you file new claims in the future. So once you find it and write it down, you won't have to hunt for it again if you need unemployment benefits later.

•Really? I thought you got a new number each time you filed.

•Nope, same UI number for life with Washington ESD. The claim numbers change but your UI number stays consistent.

•That's actually really helpful to know. Thanks for clarifying that.

The UI number format is usually UI followed by 8 digits, like UI12345678. Don't confuse it with your Social Security number or any other reference numbers on your paperwork. It's specifically labeled as 'UI Number' on official Washington ESD documents.

•Exactly! The 'UI' prefix makes it pretty easy to identify once you know what to look for.

•I was looking for just numbers and completely missed the UI part at first. Felt pretty dumb when I finally noticed it.

If anyone is still having issues getting their UI number sorted out, I'd definitely recommend trying Claimyr. Used it last week when I couldn't get through to Washington ESD about a different issue and it saved me so much time and frustration. The video demo on their site shows exactly how it works too.

•Is it worth it for something as simple as finding your UI number though?

•If you've been trying to call for days and can't get through, absolutely. Sometimes you just need to talk to a real person to get things straightened out.

•Makes sense. The phone system is definitely the worst part of dealing with Washington ESD.

I just went through this same confusion last month! Your UI number should be on your monetary determination letter - it's the one that starts with "UI" followed by numbers. But here's a tip that helped me: if you can't find any paperwork, log into your SecureAccess Washington account and go to your unemployment services dashboard. Your UI number is displayed right there at the top of your claim summary. Way easier than digging through emails and letters. Once you find it, definitely save it somewhere safe because you'll need it every single week for filing claims.

•Thanks for the tip about the SecureAccess Washington account! I didn't even think to check there. That sounds way more convenient than hunting through all my paperwork every time I need the number.
