What is an unemployment insurance number for Washington ESD claims?
I'm trying to file my weekly claim and they're asking for my unemployment insurance number but I can't find it anywhere. Is this the same as my SSN? I've looked through all my paperwork from when I first applied and I don't see anything labeled as an unemployment insurance number. Where am I supposed to find this on the Washington ESD website?

Your unemployment insurance number is different from your SSN. It should be on your initial determination letter that Washington ESD mailed you when your claim was approved. It's usually a combination of letters and numbers, something like WA123456789.

•I never got a determination letter in the mail. My claim has been pending for 2 weeks now.

•If your claim is still pending, you won't have an unemployment insurance number yet. You need to wait for your claim to be approved first.

Check your SecureAccess Washington account under the 'Claim Summary' section. If your claim is approved, the UI number should be displayed there. If you don't see it, your claim might still be in adjudication.

•Thanks! I checked and it just says 'claim status: under review' with no number anywhere.

•That means you're still waiting for approval. Can't file weekly claims until the initial claim is processed.

I had the same problem last month! Couldn't reach anyone at Washington ESD to ask about my missing UI number. Finally used claimyr.com to get through to an actual agent who explained my claim was stuck because they needed additional documentation. The video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ shows exactly how it works - way better than sitting on hold for hours.

•How much does that cost? I'm already broke waiting for my unemployment to get approved.

•It's worth it just to get answers instead of being stuck in limbo. They handle all the calling for you.

•Never heard of this before but might try it if my claim doesn't move soon.

The unemployment insurance number is basically your claim identification. You won't get one until Washington ESD approves your initial application. If you're trying to file weekly claims before approval, that's why you're getting confused.

•So I just have to wait? There's nothing I can do to speed this up?

•You can try calling to check if they need any additional info, but the approval process takes time.

•Three weeks isn't unusual if there are any complications with your work history or eligibility.

•i didnt have any complications though, just got laid off from my restaurant job

Look for a document called 'Notice of Application for Unemployment Benefits' or your monetary determination. The UI number is usually at the top right corner. If you applied online, check your email for any Washington ESD correspondence.

•I only got a confirmation email when I applied but it doesn't have any numbers except a confirmation code.

Zara Shah
•That confirmation code isn't your UI number. You'll get the actual UI number once your claim is approved and you receive your determination letter.

The UI number format for Washington is typically your state abbreviation followed by 8-10 digits. But like everyone said, you only get this after approval. Mine took almost a month to get approved last year.

•A whole month?! I can't wait that long to start getting benefits.

•Unfortunately that's just how long the process takes sometimes, especially if they need to verify your employment history.

Same boat here. Applied 2 weeks ago and still showing 'under review' on my account. Starting to panic about rent money.

•This is exactly why I used Claimyr - couldn't afford to wait around wondering what was happening with my claim. Got through to someone who could actually check my file.

•Might have to look into that if I don't hear something soon.

For what it's worth, once you do get your UI number, make sure to write it down somewhere safe. You'll need it for every weekly claim filing.

•Good tip, thanks. Assuming I ever actually get one...

To clarify the timeline: you apply for benefits, Washington ESD reviews your application (this can take 1-4 weeks), then if approved they mail you a determination letter with your UI number. Only then can you start filing weekly claims.

Diego Mendoza
•So there's really no way to speed up that initial review process?

Anastasia Popova
•Not really, unless there's missing documentation they need from you. That's why some people use services like Claimyr to actually talk to someone and find out if there are any issues.

Check your spam folder too! Sometimes Washington ESD emails end up there and you might have missed important updates about your claim status.

•Good idea, let me check... nope, nothing there either.

The UI number is basically your account number with Washington ESD. It's how they track all your weekly claims, payments, and correspondence. Without it, you're not in their system as an active claimant yet.

Diego Mendoza
•That makes sense. So I just have to be patient and wait for approval.

Zara Shah
•Exactly. Once approved, everything else moves much faster.

I remember being confused about this too when I first applied. The UI number isn't something you create or choose - Washington ESD assigns it to you automatically when they approve your claim.

Diego Mendoza
•How will I know when I get approved? Email or mail?
0 coins
StarStrider
•Both usually. You'll get an email notification and they'll mail you the official determination letter with all the details.

Pro tip: once you do get your UI number, save it in your phone contacts or somewhere easily accessible. You'll be entering it every week for your claims.

•Will definitely do that when the time comes. Thanks for all the help everyone!

•Yeah I'm learning that the hard way. Just hoping it doesn't take much longer.

Just wanted to follow up - if you do decide to use Claimyr, they can actually check if there are any holds or issues with your claim that might be causing delays. Sometimes there are problems you don't even know about until you talk to an actual person.

Diego Mendoza
•That's really helpful to know. I might try that if I don't hear anything by next week.

Sean Flanagan
•Good point. Sometimes claims get stuck because of simple things like address verification or former employer responses.

Bottom line: UI number = approved claim. No approval = no UI number = no weekly claims yet. The waiting is frustrating but that's just how the system works.

hang in there! the first few weeks are always the worst part of the unemployment process

•Thanks for the encouragement. Really needed to hear that today.

Once your claim is approved and you get your UI number, the weekly filing process is actually pretty straightforward. The hard part is just this initial waiting period.

Diego Mendoza
•Looking forward to getting past this waiting phase and actually being able to file claims.

Keep checking your SecureAccess Washington account daily. That's usually where you'll see status changes first before getting the mail.
