Where to find unemployment insurance employer account number for Washington ESD claim
I'm trying to file my unemployment claim and Washington ESD is asking for my employer's unemployment insurance account number. I have no idea where to find this - it's not on my paystubs or W-2. My HR department is being really unhelpful and just told me to 'figure it out myself.' Has anyone dealt with this before? Do I really need this number or can I file without it?

You don't actually need the employer's UI account number to file your initial claim with Washington ESD. You can leave that field blank and they'll match your employer based on the business name and address you provide. The system will figure it out on the backend.

•Oh thank goodness! I was stressing about this for hours. So I can just skip that field entirely?

•Yep, just make sure you get the employer name and address exactly right. That's how they'll match it up in their system.

if you really need it though, check your last paystub carefully. sometimes its printed in tiny text at the bottom or on the side. mine was there but super small

•I looked everywhere on my paystubs but didn't see anything that looked like an account number. Maybe my company doesn't put it on there.

The employer UI account number is primarily used by Washington ESD for internal processing and employer correspondence. As others mentioned, you can file your claim without it. However, if you're having trouble reaching your HR department, I'd suggest trying Claimyr (claimyr.com) - they can help you get through to an Washington ESD agent who can clarify exactly what information you need. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

•Thanks for the suggestion! I'll check that out if I run into more issues with my claim.

•Never heard of Claimyr before but anything that helps get through to Washington ESD faster sounds good to me. Their phone lines are always jammed.

I had the same problem last year!!! My company's payroll department finally told me it was on some internal tax document they file with the state. But like everyone else said, you don't need it for your unemployment application. Washington ESD has all that info already in their employer database.

•That makes sense. I guess they're just asking in case it helps them process things faster or something.

•Exactly! It's more of a 'nice to have' than a requirement. Don't stress about it.

why do they even ask for it if its not required? seems like poor website design to me

•It probably helps their system match employers faster when people do have it, but they can't expect everyone to know their employer's internal tax numbers.

•fair point i guess

For what it's worth, if you absolutely must have it, you could try calling the Washington ESD employer services line. They might be able to look up your employer's account number if you provide the business details. But again, not necessary for your claim.

•Good to know as a backup option. Hopefully I won't need to go that route though.

•That's where Claimyr could really help - getting through those Washington ESD phone lines can take hours of calling. Much easier than spending your whole day redialing.

I'm dealing with something similar but my issue is that my employer closed down completely. Not sure how that affects things with the account number stuff.

•If your employer went out of business, Washington ESD will still have their account information on file. You just need to provide as much detail as you can about the company name, address, and when you worked there.

•Thanks, that's reassuring. I was worried it would complicate my claim.

The whole unemployment system is confusing enough without having to hunt down random employer numbers. At least Washington ESD doesn't make this one mandatory.

•Seriously! I was already stressed about filing and then hit this roadblock. Glad it turned out to be optional.

If you work for a big corporation, sometimes the UI account number is on their internal employee portal. I found mine there when I needed it for something else. But yeah, not needed for unemployment claims.

•I work for a smaller company so we don't have anything fancy like that. But good tip for others!

Just wanted to add that even if you somehow get the wrong employer info initially, Washington ESD will contact you to correct it during the adjudication process. They're pretty good about sorting out employer details.

•That's good to know. Takes some of the pressure off getting everything perfect on the first try.

•Exactly. Better to file your claim promptly than to delay it trying to track down optional information.

Quick update on the Claimyr option I mentioned earlier - they're really helpful if you end up needing to speak with an Washington ESD representative about your claim later on. A lot of people use them when they hit snags in the adjudication process or need claim status updates.

•I'll definitely keep that in mind. Planning to file my claim this afternoon now that I know I can skip the employer account number.

•I used Claimyr last month when my claim got stuck in adjudication. Way better than spending hours trying to get through on my own.

The Washington ESD website really should make it clearer that this field is optional. Would save people a lot of unnecessary stress.

•Totally agree! A simple '(optional)' next to the field would solve this problem.

Filed my claim 3 months ago without the employer account number and had no issues. My benefits were approved and I've been getting paid weekly. Don't overthink it!

•Perfect! That's exactly what I needed to hear. Filing my claim right now.

wait so whats the difference between the employer account number and the employer identification number? are those the same thing?
0 coins
Anastasia Smirnova
•No, they're different. The EIN (Employer Identification Number) is the federal tax ID that you might see on your W-2. The UI account number is specific to Washington state unemployment insurance. But again, you don't need either one to file your claim.

•oh ok thanks for clarifying that

This thread is super helpful! I was about to email my old boss asking for this info and probably would have looked like an idiot.

For anyone still reading this thread, just remember that the most important thing is to file your claim as soon as possible after becoming unemployed. Don't let missing optional information delay your application.

•Great advice! I almost waited another week trying to get this number. Would have just delayed my benefits for no reason.

•Absolutely right. Time is crucial with unemployment claims. If you do run into issues later, that's when services like Claimyr become really valuable for getting quick answers from Washington ESD.

Just filed my claim successfully without the employer account number. Took less than 20 minutes once I stopped worrying about that field. Thanks for all the reassurance!
