How to apply for unemployment account number with Washington ESD - confused about the process
I'm trying to figure out how to get my unemployment account number from Washington ESD but I'm getting confused by all the different steps. I lost my job two weeks ago and when I try to file my initial claim online, it's asking for an account number that I don't have yet. Do I need to create an account first through SecureAccess Washington (SAW) or does the account number come after I submit my application? The website isn't very clear about this and I don't want to mess anything up since I really need these benefits.

You need to create your SecureAccess Washington account first at https://secureaccess.wa.gov/ - that's where you'll get your login credentials. Then you use those to access the Washington ESD unemployment system. The account number comes after you complete your initial claim application.

•Thanks! So I create the SAW account first, then file my claim through that portal?

Saanvi Krishnaswami
•Exactly. The SAW account is like your key to access all Washington state services including unemployment.

i think i messed this up when i applied last month. i created multiple accounts trying to figure it out and now i'm not sure which one is the right one lol

•You should only have one SAW account per person. If you created multiple accounts, contact Washington ESD to get that sorted out before filing any claims.

I had the same confusion! Here's what worked for me - I used Claimyr to get through to an actual Washington ESD representative who walked me through the whole process. They explained that you create your SAW account, then file your initial claim, and THEN you get assigned your UI account number. The rep was super helpful and it only took like 15 minutes once I got connected. Check out claimyr.com if you're having trouble getting through to anyone.

•How much does that service cost? I'm already tight on money since I lost my job.

•It's worth it to get the right information upfront rather than making mistakes. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

THE WASHINGTON ESD SYSTEM IS A NIGHTMARE!!! I've been trying to get my account set up for THREE WEEKS and keep getting different information from different people. First they told me I needed a PIN, then they said I needed an account number, now they're saying I need to verify my identity through ID.me. MAKE IT MAKE SENSE!

•Take a deep breath. The identity verification through ID.me is a security requirement they added. You do need to complete that step before you can access your unemployment account.

•Why didn't anyone tell me that from the beginning?! This is so frustrating.

•I feel you on the frustration. The system has gotten more complicated with all the security stuff they added after the fraud issues.

Let me break this down step by step for anyone else who's confused: 1. Create SecureAccess Washington account at secureaccess.wa.gov 2. Complete ID.me identity verification if prompted 3. Access Washington ESD unemployment services through your SAW account 4. File your initial unemployment claim 5. Your UI account number gets assigned after your claim is processed The account number isn't something you apply for separately - it's automatically generated when you complete your initial claim.

•Finally someone who knows what they're talking about. Saved me a lot of confusion.

wait so the account number and the claim number are different things? i thought they were the same

Mason Lopez
•Yes, they're different. Your UI account number is for your overall unemployment account. Each claim you file gets its own claim number.

•oh man i've been giving people the wrong number when they ask for my account info

I'm having trouble with the ID.me verification part. It keeps saying my documents don't match or something. Has anyone else run into this issue?

•Make sure you're using a current driver's license or state ID, and that the photos are clear. Sometimes the automatic verification fails and you need to do a video call with an ID.me agent.

•The video call option sounds scary but I guess I'll have to try it if the automatic thing keeps failing.

Pro tip: write down your account number somewhere safe once you get it. I lost mine and had to call Washington ESD to get it again, which was a pain.

•Good advice! I keep all my unemployment stuff in a folder so I don't lose anything important.

Just wanted to follow up - I used Claimyr again yesterday to get help with a different issue and the agent confirmed that the process I described earlier is correct. They really know their stuff about Washington ESD procedures.

•I've been thinking about trying that service too. The regular Washington ESD phone line is impossible to get through on.

Vera Visnjic
•Yeah, I was spending hours trying to call and getting nowhere. Much easier to just use their system to get connected to someone who can actually help.

Does anyone know if you can check your account number online once you have it? Or do you have to call every time you need it?

Mason Lopez
•Yes, you can see your account number when you log into your unemployment account through SecureAccess Washington. It's usually displayed on your main dashboard.

•Perfect, that's what I was hoping. Thanks!

I remember when applying for unemployment was just filling out a paper form at the office. Now there's like 5 different websites and verification steps. Progress I guess?

•The old system had its problems too though. At least now you can file your weekly claims online instead of mailing them in.

Kai Santiago
•True, the weekly claims are definitely more convenient now.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who helped explain this process. I finally got my account set up and filed my claim. The account number showed up in my profile after about 2 days.

•That's great to hear! I'm still working on getting through the ID.me verification but feeling more confident about the process now.

•You'll get through it! Just be patient with the verification stuff - it's annoying but necessary.

Quick question - do you need your social security card for the application or is just knowing your SSN enough?
0 coins
Mason Lopez
•You just need to know your SSN for the online application. You don't need to upload a photo of your social security card.

•Good to know, I was worried I'd have to dig through my files to find the actual card.

I tried using one of those services like Claimyr mentioned earlier and it was actually really helpful. Got connected to a Washington ESD agent in about 10 minutes and they answered all my questions about the account setup process. Way better than trying to navigate the phone system myself.

•I used Claimyr - claimyr.com. They have a good system for getting you connected to the right department.

For anyone still confused, I found a helpful video walkthrough on YouTube that shows the whole process from start to finish. Search for 'Washington ESD unemployment application 2025' and you should find it.

Make sure you have all your employment information ready before you start the application. They ask for details about your last job including dates, wages, and reason for separation. Having it all organized makes the process much smoother.

Reina Salazar
•Good point! I should probably gather all that info before I start so I don't have to stop in the middle of the application.

Fiona Gallagher
•Exactly. Also have your bank info ready if you want direct deposit set up right away.

One more thing - after you get your account number, make sure you understand when and how to file your weekly claims. That's a separate process from the initial application and you have to stay on top of it to keep getting benefits.

Nalani Liu
•Yes! I almost missed my first weekly claim deadline because I didn't realize it was a separate thing I had to do every week.

Thais Soares
•They really should make that clearer in the initial application process. It's easy to miss if you're not paying attention.

Just a heads up - the Washington ESD website sometimes goes down for maintenance on Sunday nights, so plan accordingly when you're trying to file your claims or access your account.

Does anyone know if there's a mobile app for managing your Washington ESD account, or do you have to use the website?
0 coins
Mason Lopez
•There's no official Washington ESD mobile app. You have to use the website, but it's mobile-friendly so it works okay on phones and tablets.

Norman Fraser
•Okay, that's what I figured. The mobile website version works well enough for filing weekly claims.
