What if I get a job while waiting for Washington ESD unemployment approval?
I applied for unemployment benefits 2 weeks ago and I'm still waiting for my claim to be processed by Washington ESD. The status just says 'under review' on my account. Now I just got offered a part-time job that starts next week - only 20 hours but it's something. Do I need to report this to Washington ESD even though my claim isn't approved yet? Will this mess up my unemployment application? I'm worried about doing the wrong thing and getting in trouble later.

Yes, you absolutely need to report any work immediately! Even if your claim isn't processed yet, Washington ESD requires you to report all work when you file your weekly claims. The 20 hours might not disqualify you completely - you could still get partial benefits depending on how much you earn.

•Thanks! Should I call Washington ESD to tell them now or just wait until I file my first weekly claim?

•Just report it on your weekly claim. That's the official way to do it. Make sure you have your exact hours and gross pay ready.

I was in a similar situation last year. Got a temporary job while my claim was pending. You report the work on your weekly certification and Washington ESD will calculate if you're still eligible for partial benefits. As long as you're honest about the hours and wages, you'll be fine.

•Did you still get some unemployment money even with the part-time job?

•Yeah, I was working about 15 hours a week and still got about $180 in benefits instead of the full $320. Better than nothing!

Ugh I've been trying to call Washington ESD for weeks about my claim status and can never get through. The phone system is absolutely terrible - I get disconnected every time after waiting on hold forever.

•I had the same problem until I found Claimyr.com - it's a service that calls Washington ESD for you and gets you connected to an actual agent. Saved me hours of frustration. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Really? That sounds too good to be true. How does it work exactly?

•You just tell them what you need help with and they handle the calling and waiting. Then they conference you in when they get an agent on the line. Super simple and way less stressful than doing it yourself.

the key thing is to be totally honest about everything. if you try to hide the work they WILL find out eventually through wage records and then you'll have a big overpayment problem. just report it properly and let them calculate what you're owed

•Good point about the wage records. I definitely don't want to deal with overpayment issues later.

Wait, so if I work part-time I can still get some unemployment? I thought it was all or nothing. This is confusing.

•No, Washington ESD has partial benefit calculations. If you earn less than your weekly benefit amount plus $5, you can still get some unemployment. They subtract your earnings from your benefit amount.

•Oh wow, I had no idea! I've been avoiding taking any work because I thought it would cancel my benefits completely.

•That's a common misconception. The system is actually designed to encourage you to take any work you can get, even if it's not full-time.

Make sure you understand the job search requirements too. Even with part-time work, you still need to be actively looking for full-time employment and logging your job search activities if Washington ESD requires it for your claim type.

•I haven't gotten any job search requirements yet. Does that come after the claim is approved?

•Usually yes. Once your claim is processed, they'll let you know if you need to do job searches and how many per week.

Been there! The waiting is the worst part. My claim took 3 weeks to get approved last year but once it went through everything was fine. Just keep filing your weekly claims even while it's pending.

•Thanks for the reassurance. I was starting to worry something was wrong with my application.

Pro tip: keep detailed records of your work hours and pay from day one. Makes filing your weekly claims much easier and you'll have documentation if there are ever any questions about your eligibility.

•Good idea. I'll start a spreadsheet to track everything.

•Smart! Also save your pay stubs. Washington ESD sometimes asks for proof of earnings during audits.

The Washington ESD system is so slow right now. I filed 4 weeks ago and mine is still 'under review' too. At least you got a job offer - I'm still looking.

•Same here. Filed a month ago and nothing. This is ridiculous.

•If you need to check on your claim status, Claimyr can help you get through to Washington ESD much faster than trying to call yourself. I used them when my claim was stuck in adjudication.

One thing to watch out for - if the part-time job turns into full-time, you need to report that change immediately. Don't wait until your next weekly claim if your hours increase significantly.

•It's definitely staying part-time for now, but I'll remember that if things change.

Quick question - does the part-time work affect the waiting week? I'm still serving my waiting week and wondering if working will reset it somehow.

Paolo Conti
•No, working part-time doesn't reset your waiting week. The waiting week is just about when you first file, not about your work status.

•Thanks! That's a relief.

Take the job! Even if it reduces your benefits, having some income and work experience is better than sitting around waiting. Plus it shows Washington ESD you're serious about finding work.

•You're right. I'm definitely taking it. Just wanted to make sure I handle the reporting correctly.

I wish I could find even part-time work right now. The job market is brutal in my field. At least you have something lined up!

•I know I'm lucky. It's not in my field but it's something to help pay bills while I keep looking.

•That's exactly the right attitude. Any work is good work right now.

Just remember that partial benefits are calculated on your gross earnings, not what you take home after taxes. So if you make $200 gross but only take home $160, they use the $200 for the calculation.

Keisha Williams
•Important detail! I'll make sure to report the gross amount.

•Exactly. And keep your pay stub as proof in case they ask for documentation later.

The bottom line is don't overthink it. Report the work honestly on your weekly claim, keep good records, and let Washington ESD do the math. You're doing everything right by asking these questions upfront.

Congratulations on the job offer! I went through something similar and want to echo what others have said - definitely report the work when you file your weekly claim. The good news is that Washington ESD's partial benefit system is actually pretty fair. With 20 hours at part-time wages, you'll likely still qualify for some unemployment benefits. Just make sure to keep track of your exact hours worked and gross pay each week. The online system will walk you through reporting it when you certify. Don't stress too much - you're handling this the right way by asking questions upfront!
