Weekly claim suddenly PENDING after changing tax withholding - no explanation from ESD

I've been receiving unemployment benefits for the past two weeks with no issues, but this week my payment status suddenly shows 'pending' with zero explanation. I've checked my eServices account multiple times a day and there's nothing in my alerts or messages requesting additional information. The ONLY change I made was updating my tax withholding preference from 'no taxes withheld' to 'withhold federal taxes' when I filed this week. Could that have triggered some kind of review? I've received nothing in the mail and can't get through on the phone. Anyone else experience a random pending status after changing tax settings? So frustrated with this ESD system that keeps people in the dark!

Changing your tax withholding shouldn't cause a pending status on its own. More likely, you've hit the quarterly review point where ESD automatically checks your claim. They do this periodically throughout your benefit year to verify continued eligibility. Check if you're near the end of a calendar quarter - that often triggers additional verification. If it stays pending for more than 5 business days, you should definitely try contacting them.

Thanks for the info about quarterly reviews. I didn't know that was a thing! It's been 3 business days so far, so maybe I'll give it until next Monday before totally panicking. Just wish they'd tell us when these reviews happen instead of leaving us guessing.

same thing happened to me last month!! pending out of nowhere after 6 weeks of normal payments. turned out they were doing some identity verification thing on my account but NEVER told me until i finally got thru on the phone. took like 2 weeks to resolve tho 😡

2 WEEKS?! I can't wait that long - I have rent due next week. Did they backpay you for the weeks that were pending once it got resolved?

This is incredibly common with ESD and usually resolves within 5-10 business days. Most likely causes in order of probability: 1) Quarterly review as mentioned above 2) Random eligibility verification (they do these periodically) 3) System flag due to the tax withholding change (rare but it happens) 4) Your employer submitted new information 5) Your claim hit a certain dollar threshold triggering review Unfortunately, ESD doesn't proactively notify claimants about most of these reviews. Keep filing your weekly claims while it's pending. When resolved, you'll receive all eligible payments at once. If it extends beyond 10 business days, there's likely an actual issue that requires attention.

This is super helpful, thank you! I'll definitely keep filing my weekly claims. Do you know if there's any way to check which of these reasons might be causing my pending status? The ESD website shows absolutely nothing unusual in my account.

i bet its cuz u changed ur tax stuff... the ESD computers are SO OLD they probably cant handle even tiny changes without freaking out lol. happened to my buddy last year too, his claim got stuck for like 3 days after he updated his address but then went back to normal without him doing anything

The tax withholding change shouldn't actually trigger a review - I process these claims professionally. It's a separate system module that handles tax calculations. More likely it's coincidental timing with a quarterly review or random verification selection. The ESD mainframe is old, but tax withholding changes are one thing it handles pretty routinely.

Try calling early in the morning like 7:55am right before they open. That's the only way I ever got through when my claim went pending for no reason. Waited on hold for 2 hours but at least got answers. They told me mine went pending because my employer submitted something late but they never bothered telling me!

I had the same frustration trying to reach ESD for weeks. Then I found this service called Claimyr that actually gets you through to an ESD agent without the endless busy signals. Saved me so much stress when my claim was stuck in pending. Their site is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. Totally worth it since I got my issue fixed in one day instead of waiting weeks.

UPDATE: Finally got through to ESD this morning! Turns out it WAS a quarterly review thing. The agent told me they're doing extra verification on claims that cross into Q2 2025. My claim should be back to paid status by next Wednesday. Thanks everyone for the help and suggestions!

That's great news! And now you know for future reference that these quarterly reviews happen. Mark your calendar for Q3 (July) and Q4 (October) so you're prepared if it happens again. Glad you got through to them!
