Washington ESD unemployment tax - do I owe taxes on my benefits?

I've been collecting unemployment benefits from Washington ESD for about 4 months now and just realized I might owe taxes on this money. I never had taxes withheld from my weekly payments because I didn't know I was supposed to. Now I'm freaking out about owing a huge amount when I file my taxes. Can someone explain how unemployment tax works in Washington? Do I need to pay quarterly estimated taxes or can I wait until I file next year? I'm really confused about this whole thing.

Yes, unemployment benefits are considered taxable income by the IRS. Washington ESD should have sent you a 1099-G form showing the total amount you received. You can request to have 10% federal taxes withheld from future payments by logging into your SecureAccess Washington account and updating your tax withholding preferences.

I haven't gotten any 1099 form yet. When do they usually send those out?

0 coins

They typically mail 1099-G forms by the end of January. You can also access it online through your Washington ESD account.

oh no i didnt know this either!! ive been getting benefits since july and never set up tax withholding. am i going to owe thousands of dollars??

0 coins

It depends on your total income for the year and tax bracket. If you're only receiving unemployment with no other income, you might not owe much. But it's smart to set aside some money just in case.

ok good to know, ill try to save some money from my remaining benefits

I had the same situation last year. What helped me was using Claimyr to actually get through to a Washington ESD agent who explained the tax withholding options. The website is claimyr.com and they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Much easier than trying to call Washington ESD directly and getting hung up on.

0 coins

Never heard of that service before. Does it actually work for getting through to someone at Washington ESD?

0 coins

Yeah it worked for me. I was able to talk to an actual person about my tax withholding and got it set up the same day instead of spending weeks trying to call.

The tax situation is honestly one of the most confusing parts of unemployment. Washington state doesn't have income tax but you still owe federal taxes on UI benefits. I wish they explained this better when you first apply for benefits.

0 coins

RIGHT?? They should make this more clear upfront instead of letting people get surprised at tax time.

0 coins

There is information about taxes in the unemployment handbook, but I agree it should be more prominent during the application process.

You can set up tax withholding at any time through your Washington ESD online account. Go to 'Manage Tax Withholding' and select either 10% federal withholding or no withholding. If you're worried about owing money, it's better to have taxes taken out of your remaining payments.

0 coins

Thanks! I'll log in right now and set that up. Better late than never I guess.

0 coins

Exactly. Even if you only have a few weeks of benefits left, having some taxes withheld is better than owing it all at once.

0 coins

been there done that with the tax surprise. last year i owed like $1800 because i had no withholding on my unemployment. this year im having the 10% taken out automatically

0 coins

Ouch, $1800 is a lot! Did you have to pay it all at once or could you set up a payment plan?

0 coins

i set up a payment plan with the IRS. its not fun but at least you dont have to pay it all upfront

0 coins

One thing to remember is that if you had taxes withheld from previous jobs earlier in the year, that might cover some of what you'll owe on unemployment. Check your last paystub to see your year-to-date federal withholding.

0 coins

Good point. I was working until March so I did have some federal taxes taken out then.

0 coins

That should help reduce what you owe. You might be surprised and not owe as much as you think.

0 coins

THE WHOLE TAX SYSTEM IS RIDICULOUS! You lose your job and then they want to tax the tiny amount of money they give you to survive. Makes no sense to me.

0 coins

I get the frustration but unemployment benefits are considered income replacement, so they're taxed like regular wages.

0 coins

still doesnt make it right when people are already struggling financially

0 coins

Make sure you keep all your records from Washington ESD including your payment history. You'll need that information when you file your taxes even if you don't get the 1099-G form right away.

0 coins

How do I access my payment history? Is that in the same place where I file my weekly claims?

0 coins

Yes, log into your SecureAccess Washington account and look for 'Payment History' or 'Benefit Payment Information' in your unemployment dashboard.

0 coins

If you're really worried about the tax bill, consider making estimated quarterly payments for the rest of the year. You can do this online through the IRS website using Form 1040ES.

0 coins

Is it too late to make a quarterly payment for this quarter?

0 coins

The deadline for Q4 estimated payments is January 15th, so you still have time if you want to make a payment.

0 coins

i had no idea about quarterly payments. does that mean i should have been paying taxes every 3 months while on unemployment?

0 coins

Only if you're not having taxes withheld from your benefits and you expect to owe more than $1,000 when you file. Otherwise you can wait until you file your annual return.

0 coins

ok that makes me feel better, i probably dont owe that much

0 coins

Another option is to use some of your unemployment money to prepay taxes. I put aside about $50 from each weekly payment into a separate savings account just for taxes.

0 coins

That's smart planning. I wish I had thought of that months ago.

0 coins

It's not too late to start! Even putting aside money from your last few payments will help.

Claimyr helped me understand the tax withholding options when I couldn't get through to Washington ESD on my own. Definitely worth trying if you need to speak with someone about your specific situation.

0 coins

How much does that service cost? I'm already tight on money.

0 coins

I found it worth the cost compared to the hours I spent trying to call Washington ESD directly. Check their website at claimyr.com for current information.

0 coins

Just remember that even though Washington doesn't have state income tax, you still need to report your unemployment benefits on your federal return. Don't forget about that part!

0 coins

Thanks for the reminder! I definitely would have forgotten to include it on my federal taxes.

0 coins

Yeah it's easy to forget since we don't deal with state income taxes here in Washington.

0 coins

If you're using tax software like TurboTax or H&R Block, they should automatically ask about unemployment benefits when you're entering your income information.

0 coins

Good to know! I usually use TurboTax so hopefully it will walk me through everything.

0 coins

Most tax software is pretty good about catching unemployment income, just make sure you have your 1099-G ready when you file.

my friend used claimyr last month to get help with her unemployment taxes and said it was super helpful. she was able to get her withholding set up without waiting on hold for hours

0 coins

That's good to hear. I might try that if I can't figure out the online tax withholding setup.

0 coins

yeah definitely check out the demo video first to see how it works

0 coins

Don't panic about the taxes! Most people who are on unemployment for part of the year don't end up owing as much as they think they will, especially if you had other income and tax withholding earlier in the year.

0 coins

Thanks, I needed to hear that. I've been really stressed about this whole situation.

0 coins

I totally understand the stress, but you're being proactive by asking about it now instead of being surprised at tax time.

0 coins

One more tip - if you end up owing taxes and can't pay the full amount right away, don't ignore it. Contact the IRS to set up a payment plan. They're usually pretty reasonable about working with people.

0 coins

That's reassuring to know. I was worried they'd want everything immediately.

0 coins

Nope, they have several payment plan options available. Just don't wait until the last minute to contact them.

0 coins

Thanks everyone for all the helpful information! I feel much better about the tax situation now. Going to set up withholding on my remaining benefits and start putting aside some money just in case.

0 coins

Sounds like a solid plan! You're handling this the right way.

0 coins

Good luck with everything! You've got this.
