Washington ESD unemployment for school bus drivers during summer break - can we qualify?
I've been driving bus for Spokane Public Schools for 3 years and wondering if I can file for unemployment this summer when school's out. My route supervisor mentioned something about seasonal workers but wasn't sure about the specifics. Do school bus drivers qualify for Washington ESD benefits during summer months? I know we're technically still employed but not getting paid. Has anyone successfully filed and gotten approved?

Yes, school bus drivers can typically collect unemployment during summer break in Washington. You're considered seasonally unemployed since you have reasonable assurance of returning to work in the fall. File your claim as soon as your last day of work ends.

•Thanks! Do I need to do job searches during the summer or is there an exemption since I'm going back to the same job?

•You'll still need to meet work search requirements unless you qualify for standby status. Check with your employer about standby - some school districts file for it.

I drive for Tacoma schools and got approved last summer. The key is you can't have 'reasonable assurance' of work during the summer months. Since bus drivers typically don't work summer school routes, you should qualify.

•What about substitute drivers? I only work when called in during the school year.

•Subs can be trickier. You'd need to show you worked enough hours to qualify for benefits and that you don't have reasonable assurance of summer work.

Had trouble getting through on the phone last year when I tried to file. Spent hours calling Washington ESD and kept getting the busy signal or got disconnected. Finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual person. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of that before. Did it actually work for your situation?

•Yeah it did! Got connected to someone who explained the whole seasonal worker thing. Worth trying if you can't get through the normal way.

•Interesting, might have to check that out if I run into phone issues this year.

EVERY YEAR the same confusion! School employees CAN collect unemployment during non-work periods. Bus drivers, cafeteria workers, paraprofessionals - you all qualify as long as you meet the earnings requirements and don't have reasonable assurance of work during the break.

•What exactly counts as 'reasonable assurance' though? My district sometimes offers summer transportation for field trips.

StarSailor
•Occasional field trips wouldn't count as reasonable assurance. It has to be regular, ongoing work that's comparable to your school year position.

I'm confused about the timing. Do I file right after my last day driving or wait until summer officially starts? And what about orientation week before school starts again?

Amara Nnamani
•File as soon as your last paid day ends. You can collect until you return to work in the fall, including through any unpaid orientation time.

•So if my last day is June 15th, I should file that weekend?

Amara Nnamani
•Exactly. Don't wait - you want to start the process as soon as you're unemployed.

Been driving for Seattle Schools for 15 years. Always file and always get approved. The trick is making sure your school district doesn't mess up your separation notice. Sometimes they mark it wrong and it can delay your claim.

Giovanni Mancini
•What should we look for on the separation notice to make sure it's right?

•Should show 'lack of work' or 'seasonal layoff' as the reason. If it says 'quit' or something else, you'll have problems.

This is really helpful everyone. One more question - do I need to report the small amount I might make from summer school if they call me for a few days?
0 coins
Amara Nnamani
•Yes, you must report any earnings during your weekly claims. But a few days here and there won't disqualify you completely, it just reduces that week's benefit amount.

Dmitry Ivanov
•The weekly reporting is super important. Don't skip it even if you didn't work that week.

Same boat here! Drive for Everett district and was wondering the exact same thing. Glad to see other drivers confirming we can file.

•Right? I was worried we might not qualify since we technically still have jobs.

•That's what I thought too but apparently seasonal unemployment is a real thing!

Make sure you understand the work search requirements. Even though you're returning to your job in fall, Washington ESD still requires you to search for and accept suitable work during the summer if offered.

•What kind of work would be considered 'suitable' for a bus driver?
0 coins
Dmitry Ivanov
•Generally work that pays at least 70% of your previous wage and matches your skills. Could be other driving jobs, but depends on your specific situation.

Sofia Morales
•I've never had to actually take another job during summer break in all my years filing. The requirement is there but it's not like they're forcing bus drivers into random jobs.

Anyone know if this applies to school custodians too? I work maintenance during the school year but they usually keep us on for summer cleaning projects.

Amara Nnamani
•If you're working summer projects then you wouldn't qualify for unemployment since you have ongoing employment.

Giovanni Mancini
•Different situation than bus drivers since you actually have work available during the break.

For anyone struggling with the Washington ESD phone system this summer, definitely check out that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier. Made the whole process so much easier than trying to call repeatedly.

•I'm definitely keeping that in mind. The phone situation was horrible when I had to call about something else last year.

Quick question - do we need to report our intent to return to the same job when filing? Or just file like any other unemployment claim?
0 coins
Sofia Morales
•Just file normally. They'll ask about your work history and you can explain the seasonal situation if needed, but it's pretty standard for school employees.

Amara Nnamani
•The system recognizes school employee patterns. Your employer should also file the proper paperwork on their end.

Wondering about the waiting week - do seasonal employees like bus drivers have to do the one week waiting period?
0 coins
Dmitry Ivanov
•Washington eliminated the waiting week in 2021. You can receive benefits starting from your first eligible week now.

GalacticGuru
•Oh that's good news! I remember hearing about waiting weeks being a thing.

One thing to watch out for - if your district offers you any work during summer (even just a few days) and you turn it down, it could affect your benefits. Make sure you understand what counts as 'suitable work' refusal.

Fatima Al-Suwaidi
•So if they ask me to drive for summer school and I say no, that could be a problem?
0 coins
Giovanni Mancini
•Potentially, yes. If it's similar work at similar pay, turning it down could be seen as refusing suitable work.

Sofia Morales
•But if it's just one or two days total, probably not worth losing your whole summer benefits over. Talk to Washington ESD about your specific situation.

This thread is super helpful! I start my first year as a bus driver this fall so good to know I can potentially file next summer.

•Make sure you work enough during the school year to qualify for benefits. There are minimum earning requirements.

Amara Nnamani
•You'll need at least $1,640 in your base year and meet other wage requirements. Your first summer might be different if you don't have enough work history yet.

Does anyone know if activity bus drivers (sports/field trips) get treated differently than regular route drivers for unemployment purposes?
0 coins
Sofia Morales
•Should be the same as long as you're considered a school employee. The key is whether you have reasonable assurance of work, not what type of driving you do.
0 coins
Giovanni Mancini
•Activity drivers might actually have less assurance since sports and trips can be cancelled more easily than regular routes.

One last thing - make sure your direct deposit info is updated before you file. Nothing worse than approved benefits going to a closed bank account!

•Excellent point! And keep your contact information current too. Washington ESD needs to be able to reach you if there are any questions about your claim.

As a new bus driver, I really appreciate all the detailed info here! One thing I'm curious about - does it matter if we're part-time vs full-time drivers? I only drive morning and afternoon routes (about 6 hours total per day) and wondering if that affects eligibility or benefit amounts.

Serene Snow
Part-time vs full-time status doesn't affect eligibility - what matters is meeting the minimum earnings requirements during your base year. Your benefit amount will be calculated based on your total wages, so part-time drivers typically get lower weekly benefits than full-time drivers, but you can still qualify. The 6 hours daily you're working should be plenty to meet the requirements as long as you've been working consistently during the school year.

•That's reassuring to hear! I was worried the part-time hours might be an issue. Do you know roughly what the minimum earnings requirement is? I've been driving since September so I should have a decent base year built up by summer.
