Washington ESD unemployment claim questions - confused about weekly filing process
I'm totally lost with my Washington ESD claim and have so many questions. Filed my initial claim two weeks ago and got approved, but now I'm confused about the weekly claims process. Do I have to file every single week even if I didn't work at all? And what exactly counts as job search activities - does applying online count or do I need to do something else? Also seeing something about WorkSource registration but not sure if that's mandatory. The ESD website is confusing and I keep getting different answers when I try to call. Anyone else dealing with this?

Yes you absolutely have to file weekly claims every week to get paid, even if you worked zero hours. For job search, you need 3 job search activities per week and online applications definitely count. WorkSource registration is required within a certain timeframe after your claim starts.

•Thank you! So if I miss filing a weekly claim one week, does that mess up everything?

•You can file late weekly claims but there might be delays in payment. Try not to miss any weeks if possible.

The job search thing is 3 activities per week and you have to keep a log. I use the WorkSourceWA website to track mine. But calling Washington ESD to clarify your specific requirements is probably smart since everyone's situation is different.

•I've been trying to call for days but can never get through. The phone system is impossible.

•Have you tried using Claimyr? It's this service at claimyr.com that helps you actually reach Washington ESD agents by phone. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. I used it last month when I couldn't get through and finally talked to someone about my claim status.

wait do we really need to do 3 job searches EVERY week?? that seems like a lot when there aren't always 3 good jobs to apply for in my field

•Yes it's 3 per week minimum. Job search activities include applying for jobs, attending job fairs, networking events, career counseling sessions, etc. Doesn't have to be just applications.

•oh ok that makes more sense. so like if I go to a job fair that counts as one of the three?

•Exactly. Job fairs, informational interviews, even some online career workshops can count as job search activities.

THE WASHINGTON ESD SYSTEM IS SO BROKEN!!! I've been trying to get answers for weeks and nobody knows anything. Half the staff gives you different information and the other half hangs up on you. This whole process is designed to make people give up.

•I'm starting to feel that way too. It shouldn't be this hard to get basic information.

•That's exactly why I ended up trying Claimyr - I was getting nowhere with the regular phone lines. At least with their service I could actually have a real conversation with an Washington ESD agent who could look at my specific claim.

For weekly claims you have to certify every week by Sunday night I think? And you answer questions about whether you worked, looked for work, were able and available, etc. It's pretty straightforward once you do it a few times.

•What happens if I answer one of those questions wrong by accident?

•You can usually call to correct mistakes but it might delay your payment while they review it.

I had similar confusion when I started my claim. The WorkSource registration deadline varies but I think you have like 4 weeks from when your claim begins. The job search log is super important - keep detailed records because they do audit people randomly.

•What kind of details do they want in the job search log?

•Date, employer name, position applied for, method of contact, and any follow-up. I keep screenshots of online applications just in case.

•Good advice on the screenshots. I also keep email confirmations when I apply through company websites.

honestly this whole thing gives me anxiety... what if i mess up the weekly claim and they say i committed fraud or something? i keep hearing horror stories about people having to pay money back

•Don't panic - as long as you're honest on your weekly claims and do your job searches you'll be fine. Fraud is when people intentionally lie or hide information.

•ok that makes me feel a little better. i just want to make sure i'm doing everything right

can you file the weekly claim early or does it have to be exactly on sunday?

Victoria Brown
•You can file starting Sunday morning for the previous week. So this Sunday you'd file for last week Monday-Sunday.

Pro tip: set up direct deposit if you haven't already. Checks take forever and sometimes get lost in the mail. Direct deposit usually processes way faster.

Santiago Diaz
•How do I set that up? Is it in the online account somewhere?

KaiEsmeralda
•Yeah log into your ESD account and look for payment options or direct deposit setup. You'll need your bank routing and account numbers.

Just wanted to add - if you do need to talk to someone at Washington ESD about your specific situation, that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier has been really helpful for people who can't get through on the regular lines. Way better than spending hours on hold only to get disconnected.

•How much does something like that cost though? I'm already broke from being unemployed.

•I think it's worth checking out their site for the details, but for me it was worth it just to finally get answers about my claim instead of being stuck in phone tree hell.

The most important thing is to stay on top of your weekly filings and job search requirements. Missing weeks or not meeting the job search minimum can cause problems with your benefits. Keep good records of everything.

•This is all really helpful. I feel like I have a better handle on what I need to do now.

•Glad we could help! The system is confusing at first but you'll get used to the routine pretty quickly.

one more question - do i need to report unemployment income on my taxes?

Samuel Robinson
•Yes unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can choose to have taxes withheld from your weekly payments or pay at tax time.

Remember you can also check your claim status and payment history online anytime through your ESD account. That's usually faster than calling for basic information.

•True, though sometimes the online account doesn't show everything or there are technical issues. Having a way to actually talk to someone when needed is important too.

Still think the whole system is a mess but at least now I know what hoops I have to jump through every week

•It definitely could be more user-friendly, but once you get in the routine it becomes pretty automatic.
