Washington ESD weekly claim questions and answers - need help with common issues
I've been filing weekly claims for about 6 weeks now and keep running into confusing questions on the Washington ESD system. Some weeks I answer differently because I'm not sure what they're really asking. Like when they ask about 'looking for work' - does that mean I have to have actual job interviews that week or just that I'm searching? And what about the question on earnings - do I report gross or net pay from any temp work? I'm worried I'm messing something up and don't want to get hit with an overpayment later. Anyone have experience with what these questions actually mean?

The work search question is asking if you actively looked for work that week. You need to be able and available for work each week you claim. This means you should be applying for jobs, networking, or doing other approved work search activities. You don't need interviews every week, but you need to show you're making effort.

•Thanks! So just applying to jobs online counts as looking for work then?

•Yes, online applications count. Keep a log of where you applied and when - Washington ESD can ask for documentation.

For earnings, you report GROSS earnings (before taxes) for any work done during that week, even if you haven't been paid yet. If you worked Monday through Wednesday of the claim week, report those earnings even if the paycheck comes later.

•What if I did some freelance work but won't get paid for another month?

•Still report it for the week you did the work, not when you get paid. Washington ESD goes by when the work was performed.

I had similar confusion and ended up calling Washington ESD but could never get through. Spent hours on hold just to get disconnected. Found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me reach an actual agent who explained all the weekly claim questions. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•How much did that cost? I've been trying to call for weeks.

•Worth it to get real answers instead of guessing. The agent walked me through each question on the weekly claim form.

•Never heard of them but anything beats sitting on hold for 3 hours

The 'able and available' question trips people up too. You have to answer yes unless you were actually unable to work that week due to illness or had restrictions that prevented you from accepting suitable work.

•What if I had a doctor's appointment one day but was available the rest of the week?

•One appointment doesn't make you unavailable for the whole week. You're still able and available.

ugh these questions are so confusing!! i answered wrong a few weeks ago and now my claim is under review or something. anyone know how long that takes???

•If your claim went to adjudication, it can take 2-6 weeks depending on the issue. Don't stop filing your weekly claims while it's being reviewed.

•ok good to know. this whole system is such a nightmare

Pro tip: Screenshot your weekly claim confirmation page every time you file. I learned this the hard way when Washington ESD said I missed a week that I know I filed.

Ava Garcia
•Good idea! Do you save the confirmation number too?

Paolo Ricci
•Yes, write down the confirmation number and date. Keep a folder with all your unemployment paperwork.

The question about refusing work is important too. If you turn down a job offer, you might have to explain why or risk losing benefits. The work has to be 'suitable' based on your skills and experience.

•What counts as suitable work? Can they make you take any job?

•Generally has to match your skill level and pay at least 70% of your previous wage, but there are exceptions. After a certain time you may have to accept lower paying work.

I messed up the earnings question for like 3 weeks before I figured it out. Had to call and explain - luckily the agent was understanding and helped me correct it without penalties.

•How did you finally get through to someone? I can never reach anyone.

•Used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Saved me tons of time trying to call myself.

Does anyone know if you have to report volunteer work? I've been volunteering at a food bank but not getting paid obviously.

•Volunteer work doesn't count as earnings since you're not paid, but make sure it doesn't interfere with your availability for regular employment.

•Thanks, it's just a few hours on weekends so should be fine.

The system glitched on me last week and wouldn't let me file my claim until Monday. Will that cause problems? I always file on Sunday normally.

•As long as you file by the deadline (usually Tuesday night), you should be okay. The system has been having issues lately.

•Okay thanks, I was worried I'd miss the week entirely.

Quick question - if I start a part-time job, do I keep filing weekly claims? Or do I stop unemployment completely?

Miguel Silva
•Keep filing and report your part-time earnings. Your benefit amount will be reduced but you might still get partial benefits depending on how much you earn.

•That's good to know, I was worried I'd have to choose between the job and benefits.

Washington ESD really needs to make these questions clearer. Half the problems people have are just from confusion about what they're asking.

•RIGHT?? like why can't they just explain what each question means instead of making us guess

I've been keeping a spreadsheet with all my weekly claim info - dates filed, confirmation numbers, any earnings reported. Helps me track everything and catch any mistakes.

Ava Garcia
•That's really smart. I should start doing that too.

•Yeah it's saved me a few times when I needed to reference old claims.

Does the work search requirement change based on your industry? I'm in tech and there aren't always tons of openings in my specific field.

•You can apply to related positions and expand your search gradually. Document your efforts - quality matters more than just hitting a number.

•Thanks, I've been applying to some adjacent roles but wasn't sure if that counted.

Pro tip: read each question carefully every time you file. I got in the habit of just clicking through quickly and made mistakes because some questions are worded differently than you expect.

•Yes! I almost answered wrong about job refusal because I misread the question.

•Good reminder. I should slow down and actually read instead of rushing through.

If anyone's still having trouble reaching Washington ESD about weekly claim questions, I used Claimyr again last week and got connected right away. Really helps when you need specific answers about your situation.

•I might have to try that. Been stuck on a weird question about training programs for weeks.

•Yeah they helped me understand the training question too. Way better than guessing.

Remember that your weekly claims are basically a certification that you're following all the unemployment rules for that week. Take them seriously because any mistakes can cause delays or overpayments later.

One more tip - if you ever need to correct a previous weekly claim, contact Washington ESD as soon as possible. It's easier to fix mistakes early than deal with overpayment issues later.

•How do you correct a claim after you've already filed it?

•You have to call or message them through the online system. That's another time when Claimyr helped me get through quickly.

Another thing that helped me was printing out the WA State work search log template from their website and filling it out weekly. It makes tracking your job search activities much easier when you need to provide documentation. Also, if you're doing gig work like DoorDash or Uber, make sure you understand how to report those earnings correctly - they count as self-employment income and there are specific rules about when and how to report them on your weekly claims.
