How to claim weeks for unemployment - Washington ESD weekly claim process help
I'm really confused about how to claim weeks for unemployment with Washington ESD. I got approved for benefits last month but I'm not sure if I'm doing the weekly claims right. Do I need to claim every single week even if I worked a few hours? And what happens if I forget to claim a week - can I go back and do it later? The website isn't very clear about the process and I don't want to mess up my benefits. Also when exactly do I need to submit these weekly claims - is there a deadline each week?

You need to file your weekly claim every week to continue receiving benefits, even if you worked some hours that week. The claims are usually available Sunday morning and you have until the following Saturday to submit. Yes you still need to report any work and earnings - Washington ESD will reduce your benefit amount accordingly but you can still get partial benefits.

•Thanks! So I can work part time and still get some unemployment? That's a relief. What if I worked like 20 hours one week?

•Yes exactly! If you work 20 hours and earn less than your weekly benefit amount plus $5, you'll still get partial benefits. Just report all hours and gross earnings honestly.

The weekly claim system is pretty straightforward once you get used to it. Log into your SecureAccess Washington account, go to the unemployment services section, and look for 'File Weekly Claim.' You'll answer questions about job search activities, any work you did, and earnings. Make sure to keep track of your job search contacts because they ask for that too.

•How many job search contacts do I need per week? I've been applying to jobs but wasn't keeping detailed records.

•You need at least 3 job search activities per week. Keep a log with employer names, dates, and method of contact. You can use their job search log on the Washington ESD website.

Been dealing with Washington ESD for months and honestly the weekly claims are the easy part once you figure it out. The real pain is when you have issues and need to talk to someone. I spent weeks trying to get through on the phone about a claim issue. Finally found this service called Claimyr that actually got me connected to an Washington ESD agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Is that legit? I've been trying to call Washington ESD for 2 weeks about my adjudication and can never get through.

•Yeah it's real, they basically wait in the phone queue for you and then connect you when an agent picks up. Saved me hours of calling and getting busy signals.

Missing weekly claims is a big mistake! If you don't file for a week you lose that week's benefits permanently. There's no going back to claim previous weeks. I learned this the hard way when I was out of town and forgot to file - lost $650 that week.

•Oh no! So if I'm going on vacation I need to make sure to file my weekly claim before I leave?

•You can file from anywhere as long as you have internet access. Just don't forget! Set a reminder on your phone for Sunday mornings.

•Actually you can sometimes get missed weeks restored if you have good cause like a medical emergency. It's not automatic though and you have to provide documentation.

The Washington ESD system drives me crazy with all these weekly hoops to jump through. Why can't they just automatically pay us if we're approved? Having to prove every week that we're still unemployed and looking for work is ridiculous bureaucracy.

•I get the frustration but it's federal law that requires the weekly certification. Every state has to do it this way to prevent fraud.

•Still doesn't make it less annoying when you're struggling to pay bills and have to worry about missing some arbitrary deadline each week.

Another question - what if I get a job offer in the middle of the week? Do I stop filing weekly claims immediately or finish out that week?

•You keep filing until you actually start working. If you get an offer on Wednesday but don't start until the following Monday, you can still claim that full week since you were unemployed the whole time.

•And make sure to report your last day of unemployment correctly when you do start working. Don't try to squeeze in extra weeks or they'll hit you with an overpayment demand later.

Pro tip: file your weekly claim early in the week, don't wait until Saturday. Sometimes the system gets slow on the weekend and you don't want to risk missing the deadline because of technical issues.

•Good advice! I'll start doing mine on Sunday or Monday mornings.

•Sunday mornings are best - system is usually fast and you get it out of the way for the week.

Wait can someone clarify the job search requirement? I thought it was 5 activities per week not 3?

Natasha Orlova
•It's 3 for most people but can be higher if you're in certain categories or have been on benefits for a long time. Check your individual requirements in your account.

•Ah ok that makes sense. I was stressing about hitting 5 every week when I only needed 3.

Does anyone know what happens if you accidentally put the wrong earnings amount? I realized I miscalculated my hours from last week after I already submitted.

•You should contact Washington ESD to correct it. Don't just let it slide because they'll eventually catch the error when they cross-reference with employer wage reports.

•This happened to me and I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier to get through to an agent quickly. They were able to adjust my claim without any penalties since I reported the error myself.

The weekly claim questions are pretty much the same every week right? Like did you look for work, did you work, are you able and available, etc?

Natasha Orlova
•Yes the core questions stay the same. Sometimes they add special questions for different situations but the main ones about job search, work, and availability are always there.

Amina Diallo
•That's helpful to know. Once I get in a routine it should be pretty quick each week.

I've been on unemployment for 6 months and filing weekly claims becomes second nature. Just don't get complacent - I know someone who got disqualified for giving inconsistent answers because they weren't paying attention.

•What kind of inconsistent answers? I want to make sure I don't make that mistake.

•Like saying they were available for work one week but then reporting they were out of town the same dates on a later claim. Washington ESD catches stuff like that.

Quick question - if I'm on standby with my employer do I still need to do job search activities for my weekly claims?
0 coins
Natasha Orlova
•If you're on approved standby status you typically don't need to do job search activities. But check your individual requirements because it can vary based on your situation.

Luca Bianchi
•Thanks! I wasn't sure if standby was different from regular unemployment for the weekly requirements.

The Washington ESD website has improved a lot over the past year. The weekly claim process used to be so buggy but it's pretty smooth now. Usually takes me like 5 minutes to complete.

•Agreed! Much better than it was during 2020-2021 when the system was constantly crashing.

•Good to hear it's reliable now. I was worried about technical issues based on some old posts I read online.

Don't forget you can usually check your claim status and payment information right after filing your weekly claim. It's nice to see the confirmation that everything went through properly.

•How long does it usually take for the payment to show up after filing the weekly claim?

Mateo Gonzalez
•For me it's usually 2-3 business days. If you have direct deposit set up it comes pretty quickly.

One more thing - keep records of everything! Screenshot your weekly claim confirmations and keep your job search log updated. If Washington ESD ever audits your claim you'll need documentation to back up what you reported.

•Great advice! I'll start keeping better records. Better safe than sorry with this stuff.

•Yes! I learned this from my cousin who got audited and had to provide 6 months of job search documentation. Luckily she had kept good records.
