To answer your original question directly - there's no waiting period to file in Washington. You can and should file immediately after becoming unemployed. The sooner you file, the sooner you can start receiving benefits if approved.
BTW if you run into any issues with your claim getting stuck or need to talk to someone at Washington ESD, I recently discovered this service called Claimyr that actually gets you through to a real person. Way better than trying to call yourself and getting hung up on constantly.
A couple people have mentioned that service now. Might be worth bookmarking in case I need it later.
Yeah I've heard good things about Claimyr too. Nice to have options when the regular phone system doesn't work.
Filed mine at 11 PM on a Wednesday and it went smoothly. I think the late night hours are underrated - most people aren't up filing claims at that time.
Don't overthink the timing too much. Yes some times are better than others but the most important thing is just getting it filed. I stressed about the perfect time for three days before just doing it, and it worked fine.
Just want to mention that while 26 weeks is the standard, during certain economic downturns there have been federal extensions available. But don't count on those - they're not guaranteed and depend on federal legislation.
One last thing - make sure you understand the difference between your weekly benefit amount and your total benefit entitlement. The 26 weeks is the maximum duration, but your weekly amount depends on your previous wages.
Right, so I need to look at both how much per week and for how many weeks. Thanks everyone for all the helpful info!
Exactly! And if you need help understanding your specific benefit calculation, that Claimyr service others mentioned can help you get through to ask Washington ESD directly about your numbers.
One more thing - if you ever have issues with your weekly claim or payments, document everything. Screenshots, dates, times you called, etc. Helps if you need to appeal anything later
Yeah documentation is key. And if you need help reaching Washington ESD about any issues, that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier really does work - claimyr.com
Hope this all helped answer your question! The uncertainty at the beginning is normal but you'll get into a routine with the weekly filing and payment timing

For anyone wondering about benefit calculations, your base period matters a lot. If you started a new job recently before getting laid off, those earnings might not count yet because they use completed quarters.

•That's a good point. What if your recent job paid way more than your previous jobs? Are you stuck with the lower calculation?

•You might be able to request alternate base period calculation if your recent earnings would result in higher benefits. But you have to specifically ask for it.

Last thing to remember about the $999 max - it's per week, not bi-weekly. Washington ESD only pays weekly, unlike some states that pay every two weeks. Just mentioning because I've seen people get confused about this.
