Make sure you keep records of everything - your layoff notice, pay stubs, job search activities. Washington ESD can audit claims and you'll need documentation if they ask for it.
The whole process is honestly pretty straightforward once you get started. The hardest part is just getting through to someone at Washington ESD if you have questions.
That's exactly why services like Claimyr exist. When you can't get through to Washington ESD yourself, having something that handles the calling for you is invaluable.
One more thing - if you have any issues or questions about your claim, try to get help early. Don't wait until week 20 to figure out problems. The Washington ESD phone lines are brutal but services like Claimyr can help you actually get through to talk to someone when you need it.
It's really bad. High call volume, system hangs up on you, hours on hold. Claimyr basically automates the calling process so you don't have to sit there hitting redial all day.
I was skeptical at first but after spending 6 hours one day trying to get through, I tried Claimyr and got connected the next morning. Sometimes you just need to talk to a human to resolve issues.
Bottom line for OP: 26 weeks maximum, file immediately, keep detailed job search records, stay on top of your weekly claims, and get help early if issues come up. That's the formula for getting your full benefits without problems.
The whole tax situation with unemployment is just another stress on top of already being unemployed. At least Washington doesn't have state income tax like some other states.
Bottom line: have the 10% federal withholding taken out unless you really need every dollar right now. It's much easier than dealing with a big tax bill later, especially when you might still be unemployed during tax season.
If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD by phone, there's a service called Claimyr that I used when my claim got stuck in adjudication. They got me connected to an agent who could actually help resolve the issue. Check out claimyr.com if you need to reach someone at Washington ESD.
Bottom line - file as soon as possible after becoming unemployed. The process takes time and you don't want to delay it any further by waiting to start.

The bottom line is that accurate unemployment data serves many purposes beyond individual benefits, but the verification process shouldn't take months. There has to be a better balance between accuracy and timeliness.

•Exactly. I understand why accuracy matters but the current system is broken for individuals.

•Hopefully Washington ESD's modernization efforts will improve the process. They're working on new systems but implementation takes time.

Thanks everyone for the explanations about why accuracy matters. Still frustrated with the wait but at least I understand the bigger picture now. Going to try Claimyr tomorrow and see if I can get some answers about my specific case.
