Washington ESD unemployment claim form - occupation not listed, what do I put?

I'm trying to file my initial unemployment claim on the Washington ESD website and I'm stuck on the occupation section. My job title was 'Digital Marketing Coordinator' but that's not one of the dropdown options. There's no 'other' field either. Should I pick the closest thing like 'Marketing Specialist' or 'Administrative Assistant'? I don't want to mess up my claim by choosing wrong. Has anyone else run into this problem?

Choose the closest match to your actual job duties, not just the title. For Digital Marketing Coordinator, I'd probably go with Marketing Specialist since that covers the marketing aspect. The important thing is that it reflects what you actually did at work.

That makes sense. I was overthinking it because I manage social media and email campaigns, which seems pretty specific.

0 coins

Yeah don't stress too much about the exact match. They use these broad categories for a reason.

0 coins

I had the same issue when I filed last year. My title was 'Client Success Manager' which wasn't listed. I called Washington ESD to ask and they told me to pick the option that best describes my primary job functions. In your case, if you're doing marketing work, Marketing Specialist sounds right.

0 coins

Did you have any problems with your claim because of the occupation choice?

0 coins

Nope, no issues at all. They're more concerned with your work history and earnings than the exact occupation code.

0 coins

You could also try using Claimyr to get through to an actual Washington ESD agent to ask about this. I used their service last month when I couldn't figure out part of my application and it was super helpful. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Way easier than trying to call on your own.

0 coins

Is that a paid service? I'm trying to avoid extra expenses right now since I'm unemployed.

0 coins

Yeah there's a cost but honestly it saved me so much time and stress. Check out claimyr.com - they explain everything there.

0 coins

I've heard good things about Claimyr from other people in unemployment groups. Sometimes it's worth paying a little to get real help.

0 coins

The occupation codes are just for statistical purposes mostly. Pick Marketing Specialist since that's the core of what you did. I work in HR and we deal with these forms all the time - they're not going to reject your claim over occupation category.

0 coins

That's reassuring to hear from someone who works with these forms regularly. Thanks!

0 coins

Wait, so the occupation doesn't affect your benefit amount or anything?

0 coins

No, your benefit amount is based on your earnings history, not your occupation code. The occupation is mainly for their labor market data.

0 coins

this happened to me too!! my job was like 'customer experience specialist' and that wasnt on there either. i just picked customer service representative and it was fine. dont overthink it

0 coins

Good to know it worked out for you. I'm definitely overthinking this whole process.

0 coins

The whole UI application process is stressful when you're doing it for the first time. You're not alone in overthinking every detail.

0 coins

Pro tip: keep a record of what occupation code you selected in case they ask about it later during adjudication or if you need to file again. Just write down 'chose Marketing Specialist for Digital Marketing Coordinator role' somewhere safe.

0 coins

Great idea! I'll add that to my unemployment paperwork folder.

0 coins

Smart advice. Good record keeping helps with everything unemployment related.

The Washington ESD system is so outdated with these job categories. Half the jobs that exist now weren't around when they made these lists. Just pick whatever is closest and move on.

0 coins

You're so right. The job market has changed so much but the forms haven't caught up.

0 coins

This is exactly why services like Claimyr exist - to help navigate these outdated systems when you get stuck.

0 coins

True, but at least Washington ESD has been updating their online portal slowly. It's better than it was 5 years ago.

0 coins

I'm in a similar boat - my title was 'Growth Marketing Manager' and I ended up selecting Marketing Manager. Close enough right? The key duties were the same even if the title sounds different.

0 coins

Yeah that sounds like a good match. Marketing Manager covers the management aspect of what you did.

0 coins

Perfect choice. You captured both the marketing function and the management level.

0 coins

Don't stress about this too much. I've filed unemployment claims in three different states and they all have this same issue with job titles not matching. Just be consistent with whatever you choose.

0 coins

Good point about being consistent. I'll stick with Marketing Specialist throughout the application.

0 coins

You know what's funny? I had the opposite problem - my job title was so generic ('Coordinator') that like 10 different occupation codes could have fit. Ended up calling Washington ESD and waiting on hold for 2 hours just to ask about it.

0 coins

Oh no, 2 hours on hold! What did they tell you when you finally got through?

0 coins

Basically what everyone here is saying - pick the one that best matches your main job duties. Felt kind of silly for waiting so long for that answer.

0 coins

This is exactly why I started using Claimyr. No more sitting on hold for hours just to ask simple questions.

0 coins

The real question is whether this will slow down your claim processing. In my experience, mismatched occupation codes can sometimes trigger manual review, but it's usually not a big deal.

0 coins

Manual review sounds scary. Should I be worried about that?

0 coins

Manual review isn't necessarily bad - it just means a human looks at your application instead of it being processed automatically. Most claims go through just fine.

0 coins

Right, and if they have questions about your occupation they'll just ask for clarification. It's not a denial or anything.

0 coins

I work in workforce development and see this all the time. The SOC codes (Standard Occupational Classification) that Washington ESD uses are federal categories that don't always align with modern job titles. Marketing Specialist is definitely your best bet for Digital Marketing Coordinator.

0 coins

Thank you for the professional perspective! It's good to know there's a reason behind the mismatch.

0 coins

SOC codes - that's what they're called! I couldn't remember the official term. Thanks for that clarification.

0 coins

just put marketing specialist and call it a day. i overthought my first unemployment claim too and it was unnecessary stress. the occupation thing is not going to make or break your claim

0 coins

You're absolutely right. I need to stop overthinking every single field on this form.

0 coins

One more thing to consider - if your employer shows up in Washington ESD's system with a different occupation code for your position, that could cause a minor delay. But again, it's easily resolved and doesn't affect your eligibility.

0 coins

How would I know what occupation code my employer used for my position?

0 coins

You probably wouldn't know unless it becomes an issue. Just another reason not to stress about getting the 'perfect' match.

0 coins

For what it's worth, I had a totally different occupation on my initial claim vs my weekly claims (long story) and Washington ESD never said anything about it. They care more about your work history being accurate.

0 coins

That's actually really reassuring to hear. Thank you for sharing that.

0 coins

Same here - I had to update my occupation info partway through my claim period and it wasn't a problem.

0 coins

Update: I just helped my sister file her claim last week and she had the same issue with her job title not being listed. We used Claimyr to get through to Washington ESD and the agent confirmed that Marketing Specialist would be perfect for Digital Marketing Coordinator. Took like 10 minutes total instead of guessing.

0 coins

That's exactly what I needed to hear! Thanks for following up with that confirmation.

0 coins

Nice to have official confirmation instead of just our best guesses.

0 coins

Marketing Specialist 100%. I review these applications as part of my job and that's exactly what we'd expect to see for someone in digital marketing. You're good to go.

0 coins

Perfect! Thanks for the insider perspective. I feel much more confident about submitting my application now.

0 coins

Thanks everyone for all the helpful advice! I'm going to go with Marketing Specialist like most of you suggested. Really appreciate this community - made something that seemed complicated feel much more manageable.

0 coins

Glad we could help! Good luck with your claim processing.

0 coins

You've got this! The hardest part is just getting the application submitted.

0 coins

Hope your claim goes through smoothly. Keep us updated if you run into any other issues!

I went through this exact same situation last year with my "Content Marketing Specialist" title. The key thing I learned is that Washington ESD really doesn't care about the exact title match - they're looking at your actual work duties and wage history. I ended up choosing "Marketing Specialist" too and had zero issues with my claim. The whole process felt intimidating at first, but once you submit it, you realize it's not as critical as it seems. Just make sure your work history and earnings info is accurate - that's what really matters for your benefit calculation.

0 coins

That's really helpful to know! I was definitely getting caught up in finding the "perfect" match when it sounds like the wage history is what actually determines benefits. Thanks for sharing your experience - it's reassuring to hear from someone who went through the same thing with a similar job title.

0 coins

I just went through this same issue a few months ago with my job title "Social Media Marketing Coordinator" - definitely go with Marketing Specialist like everyone's suggesting. I was worried about it too but realized I was making it way more complicated than it needed to be. The occupation code is really just for their data tracking, not for determining your eligibility or benefit amount. What matters most is that your previous employer reports your wages correctly to Washington ESD. I picked Marketing Specialist and my claim was approved without any questions about the occupation choice. Don't let this small detail hold up your application!
