Washington ESD asking for main occupation on unemployment claim - how specific should I be?

I'm filling out my initial unemployment claim on the Washington ESD website and I'm stuck on the 'main occupation' field. I've worked in several different roles over the past few years - retail manager, customer service rep, and most recently as a warehouse supervisor. Should I put my most recent job title or the one I worked longest? The dropdown has so many options and I don't want to mess this up and delay my claim. Has anyone had issues with this section before?

Use your most recent job title - that's what Washington ESD looks at for your base period wages. The main occupation field is primarily for statistical purposes but they'll cross-reference it with your work history.

Thanks! Should I be worried if the dropdown doesn't have my exact job title? Some of these categories seem pretty broad.

0 coins

Pick the closest match. Washington ESD cares more about your actual work history and wages than the exact occupation category you select.

0 coins

I put the wrong occupation on mine last year and it didn't affect anything. My claim went through fine and I got my benefits. Don't overthink it.

0 coins

That's reassuring! I was worried it might trigger some kind of review or delay.

0 coins

Same here - I was stressing about every little detail on my application but most of it doesn't matter as much as you think.

ugh i spent FOREVER trying to get through to someone at Washington ESD about this exact question. kept getting disconnected after waiting on hold for 2+ hours. finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get connected to an actual person who could explain it. they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. saved me so much frustration!

0 coins

How does that work exactly? I've been trying to call Washington ESD but can never get through either.

0 coins

It basically calls for you and waits in the queue, then connects you when they get a human on the line. Way better than sitting there hitting redial all day.

0 coins

Interesting, never heard of something like that. Might have to check it out since I've been trying to reach them for weeks about my adjudication.

0 coins

The main occupation field is used for labor market statistics and job search requirements. If you're in a specialized field, Washington ESD might require you to search for jobs in that occupation category. But for benefit calculation purposes, it's your actual work history that matters most.

0 coins

Good point about job search requirements - I hadn't thought about that connection. I'll make sure to pick something that aligns with the types of jobs I'd actually be looking for.

0 coins

Wait, does this mean if I put 'manager' I have to only look for management jobs? That seems limiting.

0 coins

Not necessarily - Washington ESD allows you to expand your search to related occupations, especially if there are limited opportunities in your specific field.

0 coins

I had this same confusion! Ended up calling and the rep told me to just pick whatever was closest. She said they see people stress about this all the time but it's really not that critical to your claim.

0 coins

How long did it take you to get through when you called? I've been trying for days.

0 coins

This was back in March, took about 3 hours of calling different times. The trick is to call right at 8am when they open.

0 coins

just put warehouse supervisor since that was your last job. thats what i did and had no problems

0 coins

Yeah, that's what I'm leaning toward. Seems like the safest bet.

0 coins

One thing to keep in mind - if your occupation has specific licensing or certification requirements, Washington ESD might factor that into your job search obligations. But for general positions like warehouse supervisor, you should be fine with any reasonable selection.

0 coins

That makes sense. My warehouse job didn't require any special certifications, just experience.

0 coins

This is good to know. I have a CDL so I wonder if that affects what I should put down.

0 coins

For CDL positions, you'd want to select the appropriate commercial driver category since that's a licensed occupation with specific requirements.

0 coins

honestly the whole Washington ESD system is confusing. every question makes you second guess yourself. just fill it out best you can and move on

0 coins

You're right - I'm probably overthinking this. I'll just go with warehouse supervisor and submit it.

0 coins

exactly! half the questions on there are worded weird anyway

0 coins

I work in HR and deal with unemployment claims regularly. The main occupation field is primarily for Department of Labor statistics. Washington ESD uses your actual employment history from employers for benefit calculations, not this dropdown selection.

0 coins

That's really helpful to know from someone who sees this from the employer side. Thanks for the insight!

0 coins

So if I made a mistake on that field, it won't affect my weekly benefit amount?

0 coins

Correct - your benefit amount is calculated from your actual wage history that employers report to Washington ESD, not from the occupation category you select.

0 coins

Speaking of getting through to Washington ESD, I finally managed to reach someone yesterday using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. The rep was super helpful and answered all my questions about my claim status. Worth checking out if you're having trouble with the phone lines.

0 coins

Good to hear it worked for you! I might try that if I run into any other issues with my claim.

0 coins

How much does something like that cost? Seems like it would be expensive.

0 coins

Actually wasn't bad at all, especially compared to the hours I was wasting trying to get through on my own. Check their site for details.

0 coins

Update: I went with my most recent job title like others suggested and my claim was approved without any issues. The whole process was way less complicated than I thought it would be.

0 coins

That's great to hear! How long did it take from when you submitted to when you got approved?

0 coins

About 10 days total. No adjudication or anything, just straight through processing.

0 coins

just a heads up - make sure whatever you put matches what's on your resume/job applications. some employers check this stuff when they're considering hiring someone who's been on unemployment

0 coins

Good point! I hadn't thought about the job search aspect. I'll make sure it's consistent with how I describe my work experience.

0 coins

I've been on unemployment three times in the past decade (different industries, layoffs happen). Every time I've put something slightly different in the occupation field and it's never mattered. Washington ESD cares about your work history and wages, not the category you pick from their dropdown.

0 coins

That's really reassuring coming from someone with multiple claims. I feel much better about just picking the closest match now.

0 coins

Three times in ten years? That's rough. Hope things are more stable for you now.

0 coins

Thanks - yeah, went through some industry changes but things are better now. Unemployment was a lifesaver during those transitions.

0 coins

Pro tip: if you're unsure about anything on your claim, Washington ESD has some decent FAQ sections on their website. Not perfect but better than guessing.

0 coins

I did check their FAQ but didn't find anything specific about how to choose the occupation. Maybe I missed it.

0 coins

Yeah their search function isn't great. Sometimes you have to dig around in different sections to find what you need.

0 coins

Been following this thread because I'm about to file my own claim. Thanks everyone for the advice - sounds like I was stressing about the wrong things!

0 coins

Same here! This has been way more helpful than trying to navigate the Washington ESD website alone.

0 coins

This is why I love these forums. Real people sharing real experiences instead of just official government speak.

0 coins

Final thought - whatever you do, don't leave it blank. I know someone who did that and it delayed their claim for weeks while they sorted it out. Just pick something reasonable and move forward.

0 coins

Definitely not leaving it blank! Going with warehouse supervisor since that was my most recent role. Thanks everyone for all the help!

0 coins

Good luck with your claim! Hope it goes smoothly from here.

I went through this exact same situation a few months ago! Had worked as everything from retail associate to team lead to operations coordinator. I ended up putting my most recent title (operations coordinator) even though I'd only been in that role for 8 months versus 2+ years in retail. My claim went through without any issues. The key thing I learned is that Washington ESD pulls your actual wage data directly from employers, so the occupation dropdown is really just for their internal tracking and job search guidance. Don't stress too much about finding the "perfect" match - just pick the closest option to your most recent role and you'll be fine!

0 coins

That's really helpful to hear from someone in a similar situation! I was torn between my different roles but you're right - going with the most recent makes the most sense. It's reassuring to know the wage data comes directly from employers rather than relying on what we select in that dropdown. Thanks for sharing your experience!
