Washington ESD asking for reason for unemployment - how detailed should I be?
I'm filling out my initial unemployment claim with Washington ESD and they're asking for the reason I'm unemployed. I was laid off from my retail job last month due to budget cuts, but I'm not sure how much detail to include. Should I just write 'laid off' or do I need to explain the whole situation with company restructuring? I don't want to mess this up and delay my claim. Has anyone dealt with this before?

Keep it simple but accurate. 'Laid off due to company budget cuts' is perfect. Washington ESD just needs to know it wasn't your fault and you're eligible for benefits. Don't overthink it - they'll contact your employer to verify anyway.

•Thanks! I was worried I needed to write a whole essay about it. Simple is better then?

•Absolutely. The key is being truthful but concise. They process thousands of these claims daily.

Same thing happened to me last year. Just put 'lack of work' or 'reduction in force' - that's standard language Washington ESD recognizes immediately. Took about 2 weeks to get approved.

•Did they ask you any follow-up questions or was that enough?

•Nope, that was it. They sent a form to my old employer but I never heard anything else about it.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to ask questions like this, I found this service called Claimyr that helps you actually reach a real person. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting hung up on.

•Is that legit? I've been trying to call Washington ESD for days with no luck.

•Yeah it's real. They basically keep calling for you until they get through. Worth it when you need actual answers.

•How much does something like that cost? Sounds too good to be true.

WHATEVER you do, DO NOT lie or exaggerate! Washington ESD will find out and you'll be in big trouble. I've seen people get disqualified for months because they weren't honest about their reason for unemployment.

•I'm definitely being honest, just wasn't sure about the level of detail they wanted.

•Good! Detail isn't as important as accuracy. They mainly want to know if you quit voluntarily or were let go.

wait are we talking about the initial application or the weekly claims? because i put different things on mine and got confused

Gael Robinson
•This is about the initial claim application. Weekly claims are different - those are just confirming you're still unemployed and looking for work.

•oh ok that makes sense. i was wondering why they kept asking the same questions lol

Also make sure you select the right category from their dropdown menu. 'Laid off' and 'discharged' are different things in Washington ESD's system. Laid off means no fault of your own, discharged usually means fired for cause.

•Good point! I definitely want to make sure I pick the right one. Mine was definitely a layoff, not being fired.

•This is confusing. What if you were technically 'terminated' but it was because of company downsizing?

Gael Robinson
•That would still be considered a layoff if it was due to lack of work, not your performance. The reason matters more than the terminology your employer used.

I put way too much detail on mine and it actually caused problems. They flagged it for adjudication because I mentioned some workplace drama that happened before the layoffs. Keep it simple - just the basic facts.

Summer Green
•Oh no! How long did adjudication take to resolve?

Khalid Howes
•Three weeks! Could have been avoided if I'd just stuck to 'laid off due to company restructuring' instead of writing a novel.

Ben Cooper
•Three weeks isn't too bad for adjudication. Mine took 6 weeks last year.

The Washington ESD phone system is absolutely horrible. I tried calling for two weeks straight and never got through. Finally used that Claimyr service someone mentioned and got connected in like 30 minutes. Game changer.

Summer Green
•Did they charge you a lot for that?

•I don't remember the exact amount but it was worth every penny to actually talk to a human being at Washington ESD.

•I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point. The hold music is driving me insane.

Just be honest about what happened. If you were laid off, say laid off. If you quit, say you quit (but you might not be eligible). If you were fired, say fired. Washington ESD has heard it all before.

Summer Green
•Makes sense. I was definitely laid off so I'll stick with that.

•What if you were 'asked to resign' instead of being fired? How do you handle that?

•That's tricky. You might want to call Washington ESD and ask, because it could be considered voluntary or involuntary depending on the circumstances.

I always overthink these things too. The form probably has a character limit anyway, so you can't write a book even if you wanted to. Just hit the main points and move on.

•You're right, I'm probably overthinking this. Thanks for the perspective!

•Yeah I do the same thing with all government forms. They're not looking for your life story.

One thing to remember - whatever you put on your initial application, you might need to stick with that story if they ask follow-up questions later. So make sure it's accurate and you can explain it consistently.

•Good advice. I'll make sure I can back up whatever I write.

Has anyone here actually gotten through to Washington ESD by phone recently? I've been trying for a month and I'm losing my mind. Maybe I should try that Claimyr thing too.

•That's exactly why I started using Claimyr. The regular phone system is basically broken. Check out their demo video - it shows you exactly how they get through.

•I'm at the point where I'll try anything. Thanks for the recommendation.

•I got through once at 7:58 AM right when they opened. Took 47 minutes on hold but I made it.

The reason for unemployment is one of the most important parts of your claim. Get it wrong and you could be waiting months for adjudication or even get denied. Better to be clear and accurate than sorry later.

Summer Green
•That's what I'm worried about. I definitely don't want to delay my benefits over something like this.

•You're smart to ask. Most people just wing it and then wonder why their claim gets flagged.

I put 'company closure' when my workplace shut down and it went through fine. Washington ESD seems to process those pretty quickly since it's obviously not the employee's fault.
0 coins
Summer Green
•That makes sense. Mine was more of a downsizing situation but similar idea.
0 coins
Pedro Sawyer
•Company closures are usually straightforward. Layoffs can sometimes get more scrutiny depending on the circumstances.

Don't stress too much about the wording. As long as you're truthful, Washington ESD will figure it out. They deal with thousands of layoffs every month - yours isn't unique or complicated.

•Thanks, that's reassuring. I think I was making it more complicated than it needs to be.

Update us when you hear back! I'm curious how long it takes them to process claims right now. Mine took forever last year but I heard they're faster now.
