What to say to Washington ESD to get unemployment benefits approved?
I got laid off from my warehouse job last month and I'm trying to figure out what exactly I need to tell Washington ESD when I file my claim. I've never done this before and I'm worried about saying the wrong thing and getting denied. Do I need to have specific reasons ready? Should I mention that my hours got cut before the layoff? I'm really stressed about messing this up because I need these benefits to pay rent. Any advice on what to say to get unemployment approved would be really helpful.

The key is being honest and straightforward. Washington ESD mainly needs to verify you lost your job through no fault of your own. Since you were laid off, that should qualify you automatically. Just explain exactly what happened - company downsizing, position eliminated, etc. Don't overthink it.

•Thanks, that's reassuring. Should I mention the hour cuts that happened before the layoff or just focus on the actual termination?

•Mention both if they're related. If the hour cuts were part of the same business issue that led to your layoff, it shows a pattern of the company struggling, which supports your case.

Make sure you have your last day of work, your employer's info, and your reason for separation clear. Washington ESD will contact your employer anyway to verify everything, so honesty is crucial. Lying or exaggerating will definitely get you in trouble.

•Good point about them contacting my employer. I definitely don't want to get caught in any inconsistencies.

I had a similar situation and got approved without any issues. The Washington ESD application is pretty straightforward for layoffs. Just stick to the facts: when you were laid off, who told you, and if you got any severance or notice. They're not trying to trick you.

•Did you have to do a phone interview or anything like that?

QuantumQuest
•Nope, my claim went through automatically. Only time they do interviews is if there's something unclear or disputed about your separation.

ugh the phone thing is so stressful though! I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for weeks about my claim status. The lines are always busy and when you do get through they just hang up on you. It's like they don't want to help anyone.

•I totally get that frustration. I was having the same problem until I found this service called Claimyr. They basically call Washington ESD for you and get you connected to an actual agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

Whatever you do, don't mention anything about looking for work while you were still employed. Even if you were, it can complicate things. Focus only on the layoff and your availability to work now.

•I wasn't job hunting before the layoff, so that shouldn't be an issue. Thanks for the heads up though.

Also make sure you file as soon as possible! You can't get benefits for weeks before you actually apply, even if you were unemployed. I learned that the hard way and lost out on two weeks of payments.

•I filed about a week after I got laid off, so hopefully that's soon enough.

•A week is fine. The important thing is you filed relatively quickly after separation.

Be ready for them to ask about any severance pay or vacation payout you received. That might delay when your benefits start, but it won't disqualify you from getting unemployment.

•I did get a small severance. Will that affect my claim?

•It might delay your benefits for a week or two depending on the amount, but you'll still get approved. Just report it honestly when they ask.

The whole system is a joke anyway. They make it so complicated when people are already stressed about losing their jobs. Washington ESD acts like they're doing us a favor when we paid into this system!

•I feel you on that. It's our money that we paid in through payroll taxes. Shouldn't be this hard to access.

•Yeah it's definitely more stressful than it needs to be when you're already worried about money.

Quick question - did your employer give you any paperwork when they laid you off? Sometimes they provide documentation that makes the unemployment process smoother.

•I got a termination letter that says I was laid off due to reduction in workforce. Should I keep that handy?

Natasha Kuznetsova
•Definitely keep it! That's perfect documentation if Washington ESD has any questions about your separation.

I'm going through the same thing right now and my claim has been in adjudication for like 3 weeks. So frustrating when you need the money to pay bills.

•That's exactly the kind of situation where calling Washington ESD directly helps. If you can't get through on your own, that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier might be worth trying. Sometimes you just need to talk to someone to get things moving.

Make sure you understand the job search requirements too. You'll need to be actively looking for work and keep records of your search activities.

•How many jobs do I need to apply to each week?

Emma Thompson
•It's 3 job search activities per week in Washington. Can be applications, networking, job fairs, etc. Just keep detailed records.

The main thing is don't panic. Layoffs are pretty straightforward for unemployment approval. You were let go through no fault of your own, so you should qualify without any issues.

•Thanks, I really needed to hear that. I've been so worried about doing something wrong.

Just went through this process myself last quarter. As long as you're honest about the circumstances and have your employment dates and employer info ready, it should go smoothly.

•How long did it take for your first payment to come through?

Isabella Santos
•About 2-3 weeks after I filed. There's always a waiting week, then processing time.

Don't forget to file your weekly claims every week even while your initial claim is being processed. Missing those can cause delays in your payments.

•Good reminder! I almost forgot about the weekly filing requirement.

been there with the phone issues too... spent literally 6 hours one day trying to get through to Washington ESD just to ask a simple question about my claim status

•That's insane. This is exactly why I started using Claimyr - I couldn't waste entire days trying to reach someone. Life's too short for that nonsense.

One more tip - if your employer contests your claim for any reason, don't panic. Layoffs are usually pretty clear cut, but if there's a dispute you'll get a chance to tell your side of the story.

•I don't think my employer would contest it since it was clearly a layoff, but good to know I'd have options if they did.

The whole process seems scary at first but it's really not that bad once you get started. Just be truthful and thorough in your application.
