Need help! Accidentally opened new ESD claim and closed existing one under adjudication

I'm in a complete panic over my unemployment situation. I had an active claim that's been stuck in adjudication since January, and I just got a voicemail today saying it's now moved to appeal stage. About three weeks ago, there was this action item in my eServices account saying I needed to open a new claim. I tried calling ESD like 50 times to ask if I should actually do this, but could never get through to a human being. So I just went ahead and completed the new claim application thinking it was required. BIG MISTAKE. The system completely closed my original claim that was finally making progress! Of course my new claim got denied right away (I don't qualify for a new benefit year yet). Now I'm totally confused about what to do. How can I cancel this mistaken new claim and get my original claim reactivated? I've already filed weekly claims on this new denied claim for about 3 weeks. Do I need to appeal BOTH claims now? I really need the original claim that got closed - it had about $4,800 left in benefits. Anyone dealt with this kind of mess before? I'm seriously stressed about bills.

omg same thing happened to me last year!! the esd website is so confusing. I think u need to call them asap to fix this bc if u keep filing on the denied claim it might cause more problems. good luck getting thru tho, i spent like 2 weeks trying

Thanks for replying! Did you ever manage to get your original claim reopened? I'm so worried they're going to say I'm out of luck or something.

You need to contact ESD immediately to explain the situation. This is a common issue when the system generates automatic prompts that don't apply to everyone's situation. Since your original claim was in adjudication and now appeal, you should NOT have opened a new claim. Here's what to do: 1. Call the ESD claims center at 800-318-6022 2. Explain that you mistakenly filed a new claim while your original claim was in appeal 3. Request they reactivate your original claim and void the new one 4. Ask them how to properly file weekly claims going forward You may need to submit an official request to backdate claims to the original claim once it's reactivated. The sooner you contact them, the better chance of resolving this without losing benefits.

Thank you for the clear steps. I've been trying to call that number every day but always get the "high call volume" message. Is there any way to get through that actually works?

After trying for weeks to reach ESD about a similar issue, I finally had success using Claimyr. It's a service that basically holds your place in the ESD phone line and calls you when an agent is available. Saved me days of frustration. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. This situation definitely requires talking to an actual claims specialist. They can reactivate your original claim, but it has to be done manually by someone with the right access level.

does that actually work?? i thought those services were scams

It's legit - I was skeptical too but it worked for me. They don't handle your claim or anything, they just solve the phone queue problem. An ESD agent still handles everything confidential.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO MAKE U FAIL!!!! They put those 'action needed' alerts knowing people will click them and mess up their claims!!! I lost 6 WEEKS of benefits because of similar BS last year and the appeal took FOREVER. This is why so many people give up and never get what they deserve from ESD.

While the system certainly has its flaws, the action items are usually relevant for most claimants. In this case, it sounds like the system automatically generated a prompt for a new benefit year application that wasn't appropriate for a claim still in adjudication. It's not an intentional trap, just poor programming that doesn't account for claims in unusual statuses.

I work as an employment counselor and see this problem frequently. Here's the technical explanation: When your initial claim hit the one-year mark, the system automatically prompted for a new claim application, but it shouldn't apply to claims still in adjudication/appeal. You need to speak with a claims specialist who can: 1. Place the new claim in "withdrawn" status (not denied) 2. Reactivate your original claim 3. Transfer any weekly claims filed on the new claim back to the original This is absolutely fixable, but only by phone with a higher-level specialist. Document the date your original claim closed and all actions you've taken. When you reach someone, ask them to document everything in your file notes.

Thank you so much for this detailed explanation! This gives me hope. So do I need to separately appeal the denial on my new claim while waiting to talk to a specialist? Or just focus on getting through to ESD first?

Don't appeal the new claim denial - that would just complicate matters further. Focus entirely on reaching a claims specialist who can withdraw the new claim and reactivate the original. The appeal for your original claim should still be valid, though you'll want to confirm that when you speak with ESD.

Oh no, that's exactly what I'm afraid of! Did you keep calling or was there something else you could have done?

I successfully resolved this exact issue last month. Here's what worked for me: 1. When calling 800-318-6022, press options for an existing claim, then payment issues (not new claims) 2. If you get through, immediately ask for a claims specialist or supervisor who can handle claim reactivation 3. Be prepared to explain that you had an appeal in process when you accidentally filed a new claim 4. Have your original claim ID number ready In my case, they were able to withdraw the new claim and restore my original claim with all weekly certifications transferred over. The key is getting to the right department - regular agents often can't help with this specific problem.

This is incredibly helpful! I'll try those exact menu options tomorrow morning. Did they backdate all your weekly claims automatically or did you have to request that specifically?

I had to specifically request the backdating. Make sure you mention every week you filed on the incorrect claim so they can transfer them all. The specialist had to submit a special request to their technical team to move those certifications to the original claim.

Update: I finally got through to ESD this morning! Used the phone menu options that @helpful_user suggested and got a claims specialist after about 35 minutes. They confirmed they can fix this by withdrawing my new claim and reactivating the original one. They're transferring all my weekly claims back to the original claim too. For anyone who finds this thread later with the same problem - be very specific that you need a claims specialist who can handle claim reactivation. Regular agents will just transfer you. The specialist said this happens pretty often because of the automatic system prompts. Thanks everyone for your help!!

That's excellent news! Glad you were able to get this resolved. Make sure to continue filing your weekly claims while they process this adjustment. It might take 1-2 weeks for everything to appear correctly in your online account.
