Denied weekly claims after applying to jobs - no denial letter from ESD to appeal?
I'm completely new to filing for unemployment and I feel like I'm messing everything up. My first week claim had an error because I didn't realize the ESD week ends on Saturday (not Sunday). I thought I figured it out after that, but now my last TWO weekly claims got denied! I'm so confused because I did everything right - applied to four different jobs each week and recorded all activities in my job search log. The worst part is I didn't even receive any letter explaining WHY they were denied, so I can't file an appeal. I've been trying to reach someone at ESD by phone (made 8 calls today alone!) but can't get through to a real person. I'm seriously stressing out about bills piling up. Has anyone dealt with denied claims with no explanation? Any advice on how to actually speak to someone at ESD?

This happened to me back in January. There are a few common reasons your claims might get denied without explanation: 1) Identity verification issues, 2) Work search requirements not properly documented, or 3) Earnings reporting problems. Check your eServices dashboard for any alerts or action items - sometimes they don't send letters but put notices there instead. Also make sure your contact info is up to date in the system.

•Thanks for the reply! I checked my eServices dashboard and there's nothing there except the status saying "denied" for those weeks. My contact info is definitely current. I'm wondering if it's the work search part - do I need to be more detailed than just listing the employer name, position, and date? Does it matter if I apply all online?

•I definitely did at least 4 job searches each week, and I thought I filled everything out correctly. Is there a specific way I need to document the searches? Like do I need to include contact info for each employer or something?

For proper work search documentation, you need to include: employer name, position, how you applied (online, in-person, etc.), contact information (if available), and the specific action you took (submitted application, had interview, etc.). Missing any of these elements can result in a denial. Regarding the lack of denial letter - this is concerning but not uncommon. You can still appeal without a formal letter. Call the Office of Administrative Hearings at 1-800-366-8193 and explain your situation. You typically have 30 days from the denial to file an appeal, even without receiving the official notice. In the meantime, continue filing your weekly claims correctly despite the denials. If your appeal is successful, you'll receive back payments for properly filed weeks.

•Thank you so much for this detailed information! I didn't realize I needed to include all those specific details for the job search. I'll definitely call the Office of Administrative Hearings tomorrow. And good point about continuing to file correctly - I hadn't thought about potential back payments.

I was in the EXACT same situation last month!!! It's SO frustrating when you think you're doing everything right and then get denied for no reason! In my case, it turned out that I was putting job searches in the system but not clicking the final "submit" button for the weekly job search verification. Double-check that you're completing ALL steps in the process.

•Omg that might be it actually! I remember the system being really confusing with multiple screens and confirmations. I might have missed that final submission step. How did you finally get it resolved?

After weeks of being unable to reach anyone at ESD, I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got through to an agent in about 15 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 The agent was able to see exactly why my claims were denied (in my case it was an employer dispute I didn't know about) and helped me file the proper appeal. Saved me so much stress after trying to call on my own for days.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO DENY YOU!!! They make the rules confusing ON PURPOSE so they can deny benefits. I bet they're hoping you'll just give up instead of fighting it. They denied three of my weeks for "insufficient job search" even though I did EXACTLY what they asked for. Then when I finally got someone on the phone after TWO WEEKS of calling, they said I just needed to add more details. RIDICULOUS!!

•It certainly feels that way sometimes! The lack of clear instructions is really frustrating. Did you manage to get your denied weeks approved after adding more details?

•While the system can be frustrating, it's not actually designed to deny claims. The job search requirements are there to ensure people are actively looking for work while receiving benefits. The ESD website has detailed instructions on proper documentation: https://esd.wa.gov/unemployment/job-search-requirements

Important update for everyone: For 2025 claims, ESD now requires that you document the specific outcome of each job search activity (application received, interview scheduled, rejection, etc.). This is a newer requirement that many claimants miss. Also, ensure you're correctly reporting any part-time work or income during your claim weeks. Even a small unreported amount can trigger an automatic denial. Lastly, if you're having trouble with the online system, you can request a paper job search log by calling 1-800-318-6022. Some claimants find this easier to manage correctly.

•Thank you for this information! I didn't know about the outcome requirement - that could definitely be part of my problem. I haven't had any income to report, so that shouldn't be the issue. I'll make sure to include outcomes going forward. Would resubmitting my job search info help with the denied weeks?

wait guys sorry to jump in but if the claim shows denied doesn't that mean the initial claim was denied? or can weekly claims get denied too? i'm getting so confused with this whole process...

•Both can happen. Your initial claim can be denied (meaning you don't qualify for benefits at all), OR individual weekly claims can be denied even after your initial claim is approved. Since OP mentioned their first week claim had an error but they could still file for later weeks, it sounds like their initial claim was approved but specific weekly claims were denied.

UPDATE: Thank you everyone for the helpful advice! I checked my job search logs and realized I wasn't including the contact information or outcomes for each application. I also suspect I might not have been clicking the final submission button correctly. I'm going to call the Office of Administrative Hearings tomorrow about appealing the denied weeks. Will also try Claimyr if I can't get through on my own - at this point, I just need to speak to someone who can explain exactly what went wrong. Really appreciate all the guidance!

•Glad you figured it out! Make sure to continue filing your weekly claims correctly while you sort this out. If your appeal is successful, you'll receive payments for those weeks. Good luck!
