Is there a deadline to file for unemployment in Washington - missed filing window?

I got laid off from my construction job two months ago and just found out I might be able to get unemployment benefits. I've been applying for jobs this whole time but didn't realize I could file for UI. Is there a deadline to file for unemployment in Washington? Did I miss my chance by waiting this long? I'm really worried I screwed myself over by not knowing about this sooner.

You haven't completely missed your window, but time is critical. In Washington, you need to file your initial claim within one year of your separation date. However, there's a waiting week and you can only get benefits for weeks you actually file - so you've lost those 8 weeks of potential benefits already.

So I can still file but I won't get paid for the weeks I already missed? That's like $3,200 I lost out on...

0 coins

Exactly. Washington ESD doesn't pay retroactively for weeks you didn't file weekly claims. But you should still file your initial claim ASAP to start getting benefits going forward.

File today if you can! I made the same mistake and waited 6 weeks. Lost out on so much money I could have gotten. The online application on Washington ESD's site is pretty straightforward.

How long did it take for your claim to get approved after you finally filed?

0 coins

About 2 weeks for the initial determination, but then it went into adjudication for another 3 weeks because of some issue with my job separation.

Don't beat yourself up too much about it. A lot of people don't know they can file right away. The important thing is you're filing now. Just make sure you have all your employment info ready - last employer details, wages, reason for separation.

I have my final paycheck stub and the layoff notice. Is that enough or do I need more documentation?

0 coins

That should be good to start. Washington ESD will request more info if they need it during the claim process.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to ask questions about your filing deadline, I discovered this service called Claimyr that helped me reach an actual agent. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a video demo showing how it works at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Saved me hours of calling and getting busy signals.

0 coins

Is this legit? Seems too good to be true that there's a service that can actually get you through to Washington ESD.

0 coins

I was skeptical too but it worked. Got connected to an agent in about 20 minutes instead of calling for days. Worth checking out the demo video.

The one year deadline is accurate but there are some exceptions. If you were misled about your eligibility or had good cause for the delay, Washington ESD might accept a late filing. But honestly, most people don't qualify for those exceptions.

0 coins

What counts as 'good cause' for filing late?

0 coins

Things like serious illness, natural disasters, or being given wrong information by an Washington ESD employee. Just not knowing you could file probably won't qualify.

0 coins

This is why they need to do better outreach. So many people lose benefits just because they don't know the system.

I'm in the same boat! Got laid off 6 weeks ago and just started looking into unemployment. This thread is making me panic that I waited too long.

0 coins

Six weeks isn't too bad compared to two months. File your initial claim today and start your weekly claims immediately.

0 coins

At least you're only out 6 weeks instead of 8 like me. We both need to stop procrastinating and just file.

0 coins

The Washington ESD website has a benefit calculator where you can estimate what your weekly benefit amount would be. Might help you see what you're potentially missing by not filing yet.

0 coins

Good idea, I'll check that out. Need to see if it's even worth the hassle of filing at this point.

0 coins

It's definitely worth filing. Even if you lost some weeks, you'll still get benefits for the remaining weeks you're unemployed.

0 coins

Just a heads up - when you do file, make sure you're actively job searching because Washington ESD requires work search activities. You'll need to log your job search efforts.

0 coins

I've been applying for jobs already. Do I need to log the ones I already applied to before filing my claim?

0 coins

No, the work search requirement starts the week you file your claim. But keep track of everything going forward.

0 coins

this is so frustrating that they don't make the deadlines clearer. i almost missed filing too because i thought you had to wait a certain amount of time after getting laid off

0 coins

I thought the same thing! Turns out you're supposed to file right away, not wait. The system is confusing.

0 coins

The confusion comes from the waiting week requirement, but that doesn't mean you wait to file - you file immediately and then serve your waiting week.

0 coins

Two months isn't the end of the world. I know someone who filed 4 months after their layoff and still got approved. You just lose those back weeks permanently.

0 coins

That makes me feel a bit better. Still kicking myself for waiting but good to know it's not completely hopeless.

0 coins

THE DEADLINE IS ONE YEAR BUT YOU LOSE EVERY WEEK YOU DON'T FILE. File your initial claim today and then file weekly claims every week going forward. Don't wait another day!

0 coins

Point taken! I'm going to file as soon as I get home from work today.

0 coins

Yep, stop researching and just file. You can always ask questions after you get the process started.

0 coins

When I was struggling to get through to Washington ESD to clarify some filing questions, someone recommended Claimyr and it was a game changer. Instead of spending days trying to call, I got connected to an actual person who could answer my specific questions about deadlines and eligibility.

0 coins

How much does something like that cost? I'm already stressed about money.

0 coins

I don't remember the exact cost but it was worth it for the peace of mind. Check out their site claimyr.com - they explain how it works.

0 coins

Also remember that even after you file your initial claim, you still need to file weekly claims every week to get paid. Missing even one weekly claim filing can mess up your benefits.

0 coins

So it's not just file once and done? I have to do something every week?

0 coins

Correct. Every week you want benefits, you need to file a weekly claim certifying that you're still unemployed and looking for work.

0 coins

The weekly claims are due every Sunday for the previous week. Don't miss those deadlines either.

0 coins

I procrastinated on filing too and regret it so much. Lost about $2800 in benefits I could have gotten. Don't make the same mistake - file today!

0 coins

These responses are really motivating me to stop putting it off. Thanks everyone for the wake up call.

0 coins

One more thing - if your claim gets stuck in adjudication or you have issues, don't wait weeks trying to call Washington ESD. I used Claimyr after seeing it mentioned here and actually got my adjudication issue resolved because I could talk to a real person.

0 coins

What kind of adjudication issue did you have? I'm worried mine might get complicated too.

0 coins

They questioned my job separation reason. Having an actual conversation with an agent helped clear it up quickly instead of waiting months.

0 coins

Update us when you file! I'm curious how long the initial claim takes to process these days. Seems like everything with Washington ESD takes forever.

0 coins

Will do! Planning to file tonight and I'll post an update in a few days about how the process goes.

0 coins

Good luck! The waiting is the hardest part but once you get through the initial process it gets easier.
