Husband's UI claim showing 'disqualified' for 3 weeks with no pending issues - identity verified but no explanation
My husband lost his construction job in June when the commercial building project got canceled. He applied for unemployment right away and everything seemed fine at first. For the first 2 weeks his payments were 'pending' which I guess is normal, but then the last 3 weeks suddenly changed to 'disqualified' with no explanation! We checked his eServices account and there's nothing showing under 'pending issues' and his identity has already been verified (the green checkmark is there). He's been doing all his required job searches and uploading them correctly. We desperately need this income - our savings is almost gone and we have a mortgage payment coming up. Has anyone dealt with this disqualified status without any explanation? What should we do? Is there a way to find out WHY he was disqualified if there's nothing showing in the system?

I had the same thing happen last month! Call them ASAP - turns out there was an employer dispute that wasn't showing up in my account. My former employer had claimed I quit when I was actually laid off. You won't see this in your account for some reason. You need to talk to an actual ESD agent.

•Thanks! That makes sense - his employer was having financial problems and might be disputing to save on their unemployment insurance costs. How did you ever get through on the phone? We've tried calling every day this week and can't get past the automated system!

disqualified usually means they think he quit or got fired for misconduct. did he get any letters in the mail? sometimes they dont show up in the online portal but they mail them

•We haven't received anything in the mail either! That's what's so frustrating. How are we supposed to appeal something when we don't even know what the issue is?

This is a common issue with ESD's system. When you see a disqualification without explanation, it's usually one of these reasons: 1. Employer dispute (as mentioned) 2. Job search requirements not properly recorded 3. Availability issues (if he indicated limited availability) 4. Income reporting discrepancy 5. Missing information from previous employer The key is getting in touch with an agent who can see the actual notes on the account. You won't see this information in your eServices portal. I recommend: - Continue calling, but try right when they open (8:00 AM) - Send a secure message through your account asking specifically why the disqualification occurred - Check if there's a WorkSource office near you where staff might help - If it's been over 10 days since the disqualification, file an appeal immediately even without knowing the exact reason Don't wait too long - the appeal deadline is strict.

•Thank you for all this information! We'll definitely try calling right at 8am tomorrow. I didn't realize we could appeal without knowing the reason - we'll do that too since it's been almost 2 weeks now. So stressful!

•Oh no, 2 months is so long! Did you guys manage financially during that time? We might have to borrow money from family if it's going to take that long.

I work with unemployment claims regularly, and this situation typically indicates an employer response that triggered a disqualification. In Washington, employers have 10 days to contest a claim. When they do, it often results in an automatic disqualification until a determination interview can be scheduled. The concerning part is that you should have received both an electronic and mailed notice explaining the disqualification reason and appeal rights. The fact that nothing appears in the portal suggests there might be a system issue. You need to: 1. File an appeal immediately (you have 30 days from disqualification) 2. Continue filing weekly claims during the appeal process 3. Speak with an ESD agent who can view the actual determination notes For the last point, getting through to ESD can be extremely difficult during busy periods, but it's essential to understand why the disqualification occurred.

•Thank you for the detailed explanation. We'll definitely file an appeal right away. I'm wondering if maybe there's a problem with our mailing address in the system since we haven't received anything that way either. Is there any way to check or update this online?

•Yes, you can verify and update your mailing address in the eServices portal. Go to your profile settings and check that everything is correct. If you recently moved, this could explain the missing notices. I also recommend checking your email spam folder, as some notifications may have been filtered out.

After dealing with ESD for months last year, I found out about Claimyr (claimyr.com) and it was a game-changer for getting through to an actual person. They basically hold your place in the phone queue and call you when they get an agent. Saved me hours of frustration when I had a similar disqualification issue. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. In your situation, you definitely need to talk to a human at ESD who can see what's going on behind the scenes.

•Thank you! I've never heard of this service. We'll check it out because we're desperate to talk to someone. Sitting on hold for hours when you don't even know if you'll get through is so frustrating.

You really need to be persistent with calling ESD. I'm in the same situation right now - been trying for 2 weeks to find out why I was disqualified. The automated system is a nightmare and doesn't tell you anything useful! I've sent 3 messages through eServices and haven't heard back. This system is broken!

•Make sure you're sending messages through the secure messaging system, not the general contact form. Also be specific in your subject line (Example: "Disqualification explanation needed - Claim #12345"). Generic messages often get overlooked in their backlog. Follow up every 3-4 business days if you don't receive a response.

UPDATE: We finally got through to ESD this morning! Turns out his former employer disputed the claim saying he was fired for attendance issues, which is completely untrue. He was part of a layoff with 5 other workers when the project lost funding. The ESD agent said we need to submit documentation showing it was a layoff (we have the layoff notice email from his supervisor). We've started the appeal process and uploaded the documentation. The agent said we should expect a fact-finding interview in about 3 weeks. At least now we know what happened, even though it's frustrating the employer would lie. Thank you everyone for your help!

•Great update! Make sure you keep all communication with the supervisor about the layoff. Also, if any of the other laid-off workers are willing to provide statements confirming it was a group layoff, that would strengthen your case significantly. Continue filing weekly claims during this process, and you should receive all back payments if the appeal is successful.
