ESD claim stuck in adjudication with no explanation - what's happening?
I'm stressed out trying to navigate this unemployment process for my husband who was let go from his construction job last month. I filled out his application carefully (triple-checked everything!) and it initially said "processing" but now for the past 10 days it shows "adjudication in progress" with ZERO explanation why. Shouldn't there be some kind of notice or message explaining what they're reviewing? His eServices account doesn't show any issues or alerts, and there's nothing in the correspondence section. He needs this income soon as our savings are getting low. Has anyone else dealt with a mystery adjudication? How long does this typically take in 2025? Getting worried since we can't even address whatever issue they're looking at if they don't tell us what it is!

Unfortunately, ESD often puts claims into adjudication without specifying the exact reason in the online portal. It's frustrating but common! Adjudication can happen for many reasons - employer verification issues, earnings discrepancies, job separation reasons, or even just random quality checks. The system is designed to flag anything that needs human review. You should receive a letter or online notice eventually explaining what they're investigating, but it might take 1-2 weeks after adjudication starts. In the meantime, make sure your husband continues filing his weekly claims even while in adjudication - this is SUPER important! Those weeks won't get paid until adjudication clears, but they need to be on file.

•Thanks for explaining! We'll definitely keep filing the weekly claims. Is there any way to find out what triggered the adjudication? Should we call ESD directly?

•A month?? Oh no, we can't wait that long! Did you eventually find out what the issue was?

I've been through this process multiple times. When a claim goes into adjudication, it means there's something they need to verify about the claim - but their system doesn't always tell you what that is immediately. Common triggers for construction workers include: 1. Seasonal work patterns (they check if it's a regular layoff) 2. Verification with the employer about reason for separation 3. Checking any severance or final pay amounts 4. Wage verification if your husband worked for multiple employers The current average adjudication time is 3-5 weeks, though some resolve faster. Keep filing weekly claims and watch for a questionnaire that might come through your eServices account or by mail. That questionnaire will usually reveal what they're investigating.

•This is so helpful, thank you! He did work for two different companies in the last 18 months, so maybe that's triggering extra verification. I'll watch for a questionnaire.

ESD IS THE WORST!!! They put me in "adjudication" for TWO MONTHS last year and never even bothered to tell me why! When I finally got through to someone they said it was because my employer disputed something but they couldn't tell me WHAT!! How are we supposed to fix problems we don't know about???????? The whole system is designed to DENY benefits by making it impossible to navigate!!!

•I hear you. The system seems designed to frustrate people into giving up sometimes. Hope your situation got resolved eventually.

After spending weeks trying to get through to ESD on the phone with no luck, I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got connected to an ESD agent in about 20 minutes. They were able to tell me exactly why my claim was in adjudication and what documents I needed to provide. Saved me weeks of wondering and waiting. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. Much easier than spending hours on hold only to get disconnected.

•I hadn't heard of this service before. If we don't hear anything in the next few days, we might try this. Getting direct answers would help my anxiety a lot!

omg my husband worked construction too and had the EXACT same problem last winter! turned out they were checking if he was on "standby" status (like seasonal layoff) vs regular unemployment. took like 3 weeks but eventually got approved. just keep doing the weekly claims!

•That makes sense since construction does slow down seasonally. His company actually closed their local division completely, so it's not seasonal. I wonder if that's causing confusion in their system.

One more thing - if your husband was laid off due to the company closing a division, make sure you have some kind of documentation of that (termination letter, email, etc.). That might speed up the adjudication process if you can provide it when they contact you. Also, double-check that the employer listed the correct separation reason when ESD contacted them. Sometimes employers report it as a quit when it was actually a layoff, which triggers unnecessary adjudication.

•We do have his termination letter stating the division closure as the reason! I'll make sure we have it ready to provide. Thank you for this advice.

to answer ur question about what happened with mine - they finally sent me a letter after 3 weeks asking about some part time work i did during my base year. once i filled out their form it only took like 4 days to approve everything. so annoying they couldnt just ask me that from the beginning!

Good news is that once adjudication is complete, if approved, they'll pay for all the weeks you've been claiming in one lump sum. So even though it's stressful waiting, you won't lose any eligible benefits. Make sure your husband's job search log is being maintained properly (3 job search activities each week) while waiting. The last thing you want is to get through adjudication only to be denied for inadequate job search activities.

•Thank you! We've been keeping detailed records of his job search activities in the WorkSourceWA system. Definitely don't want to mess that up after waiting through adjudication!
