How to stop claiming unemployment benefits in Washington ESD system?
I need to figure out how to stop claiming unemployment through Washington ESD. I just got hired full-time and my first day is Monday. Do I need to call them or can I just stop filing my weekly claims? I don't want to mess anything up or get flagged for overpayment later. Anyone know the proper way to close out an active UI claim?

You should definitely report your return to work properly! Don't just stop filing - that can create issues. Log into your eServices account and report your first day of work when you file your final weekly claim. There's a section specifically for reporting return to work.

•Thanks! So I should file one more weekly claim and mark that I'm returning to work? Do I need to do anything else after that?

Ruby Garcia
•Exactly! File that final claim reporting your start date, then your claim will automatically close. Keep your records just in case.

Congratulations on the job! Make sure you report the exact start date. If you worked any days during your claim week, you need to report those hours and wages too. Washington ESD is pretty strict about accurate reporting.

•Good point about reporting hours if I work during the claim week. My start date is Monday so that should be clean.

I tried calling Washington ESD about this same thing last month and could never get through. Spent hours on hold. Finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me reach an agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Got through in like 20 minutes and confirmed exactly how to close my claim properly.

•Never heard of that service. How much does it cost? Seems like something simple like closing a claim shouldn't require paying a third party.

•I was skeptical too but honestly the peace of mind was worth it. I had questions about my specific situation and wanted to make sure I wouldn't have issues later.

•You can definitely do this online through eServices without calling. The system walks you through reporting return to work step by step.

wait do i have to pay anything back if i stop claiming? im worried about overpayments

Ruby Garcia
•No, as long as you report your return to work correctly and on time, you won't owe anything back. Only people who get overpayments are those who don't report work or report it incorrectly.

I'm in a similar situation but my job is only part-time. Can I keep claiming unemployment while working part-time or do I have to stop completely?

•You can continue claiming while working part-time as long as you report all your hours and wages. Washington ESD will reduce your weekly benefit amount based on what you earn, but you might still be eligible for partial benefits.

•That's helpful, thanks! I wasn't sure if working at all would disqualify me completely.

•Yeah, the partial benefit system is designed to help people transition back to full-time work. Just be super accurate with your reporting.

Make sure you keep documentation of your start date and first paycheck stub. I've heard stories of people having to prove their return to work date later if there are any questions.

•Good advice. I'll make sure to save everything just in case.

The eServices system is pretty straightforward for this. When you file your weekly claim, there's a clear question about returning to work. Just answer honestly and it handles everything automatically.

•Perfect, that sounds easy enough. I was overthinking this.

•Yeah, Washington ESD has actually made the online system pretty user-friendly for basic stuff like this.

Don't forget about the work search requirements! Since you're returning to work, you won't need to do job searches anymore, but make sure your final claim reflects that correctly.

•I hadn't thought about that. So I don't need to log job searches for my final week since I'm starting work?

•Right, once you return to full-time work, the job search requirement ends. Just report your return to work date and you're good.

I had to close my claim last year and it was really smooth through the online system. Just filed my regular weekly claim, reported my start date, and got a confirmation that my claim was closed. No drama at all.

•That's reassuring! I was worried it would be more complicated.

Quick question - if I close my claim and then get laid off again in a few months, can I reopen it or do I have to file a new claim entirely?

Ruby Garcia
•It depends on timing and your earnings. If it's within your benefit year and you haven't exhausted your benefits, you might be able to reopen. Otherwise you'd file a new claim. Washington ESD can explain your specific situation.

•This is exactly the kind of question I used Claimyr to ask an agent about. Sometimes the online info isn't clear for individual situations.

Make sure your employer knows you were on unemployment too. Some companies want documentation for their records, especially if there's any gap in employment history.

•Interesting point. I'll ask HR if they need anything from me about the unemployment period.

Honestly, I was terrified about messing up my claim closure. Ended up using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier just to double-check everything. Agent confirmed I was doing it right and walked me through the exact steps. Made me feel way more confident about the whole process.

•I'm starting to think maybe I should use that service too. I have some weird timing issues with my start date that I'm not sure how to handle.

•Yeah, for complicated situations it's definitely worth getting an expert opinion. The peace of mind alone was worth it for me.

Just wanted to add - if you're nervous about doing anything wrong, you can always call Washington ESD directly. But yeah, the wait times are brutal. Sometimes it's easier to just follow the online prompts carefully.

•I might try calling if I run into any issues, but it sounds like the online process should work fine for a straightforward situation like mine.

Remember that your final payment might be prorated if you work any days during that claim week. Don't be surprised if it's less than your usual weekly benefit amount.

•That makes sense. Since I'm starting Monday, most of that week will be work days.

Congrats on landing the job! The timing worked out well starting on a Monday - makes the reporting cleaner. You should be all set just following the standard process everyone outlined.

One last tip - screenshot or print your final claim confirmation for your records. It's good to have proof that you properly reported your return to work in case any questions come up later.

•Great suggestion! I'll definitely save that confirmation page.

For anyone still worried about this process - I've helped several friends close their claims and it's really not complicated. The Washington ESD online system handles most of the work for you once you report your return to work date accurately.

Just to close the loop on the Claimyr discussion - I used them last month for a different issue and they were legit. Sometimes it's worth paying for help when you need to talk to Washington ESD quickly, especially if you have time-sensitive questions about your claim.
