How do I close my unemployment claim in Washington ESD?

I got a job offer and start next Monday but I can't figure out how to officially close my unemployment claim with Washington ESD. Do I just stop filing weekly claims or is there something else I need to do? I don't want to mess anything up or accidentally keep getting benefits after I start working.

You'll want to file one final weekly claim reporting your start date and then stop filing after that. Washington ESD will automatically close your claim once you stop filing for a certain period.

Thanks! So I don't need to call them or fill out any special forms?

0 coins

Nope, just make sure you report your new job accurately on that last claim filing.

0 coins

Congrats on the new job! I was in the same situation last year and it was confusing.

0 coins

Thank you! Yeah it's not super clear on the website what to do.

0 coins

Actually, you should call Washington ESD to formally notify them. I've heard of people getting overpayment notices because they didn't properly close their claims. The phone system is terrible though - took me 47 tries to get through last time.

0 coins

Oh no, now I'm worried. I thought just stopping the weekly claims was enough!

You can try using Claimyr.com - they have this service that calls Washington ESD for you and gets you through to an actual person. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

0 coins

Never heard of that before. Does it actually work?

0 coins

I closed my claim in October and just stopped filing weekly claims. Never had any issues. Washington ESD automatically marks it as inactive after 4 weeks of not filing.

0 coins

That's reassuring. I was worried about getting in trouble somehow.

0 coins

Yeah, the system is designed to handle people going back to work. Just be honest on your last filing about your employment status.

0 coins

wait do you have to pay back benefits if you start work mid-week??

0 coins

No, you just report the days you worked and they'll adjust your benefit amount for that week accordingly.

0 coins

ok good i was freaking out for a second there

0 coins

The official Washington ESD policy is that you should report your return to work on your weekly claim, but calling to notify them directly is the safest approach. I used that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier and got through to someone who confirmed my claim closure over the phone.

0 coins

How much does that service cost? I might try it just to be safe.

0 coins

It's worth it for the peace of mind. Way better than spending hours redialing Washington ESD.

0 coins

I'm so jealous you found a job! I've been looking for 3 months now and still nothing.

0 coins

Keep at it! I applied to like 50 places before getting this offer. Are you keeping track of your job search activities for Washington ESD?

0 coins

Yeah I have my job search log all updated. It's just discouraging sometimes.

0 coins

The job market is rough right now. Don't give up!

0 coins

This thread is making me paranoid about my own claim closure from last year. I just stopped filing weekly claims and never called. Should I be worried about an overpayment notice?

0 coins

If it's been over a year and you haven't heard anything, you're probably fine. Washington ESD usually catches overpayment issues pretty quickly.

0 coins

Yeah, don't stress about it. The system works for most people without needing to call.

0 coins

THE WASHINGTON ESD PHONE SYSTEM IS ABSOLUTE GARBAGE!!! I spent 6 hours trying to get through yesterday and kept getting hung up on. This whole system is broken.

0 coins

That's exactly why I recommend Claimyr. They handle all the calling frustration for you.

0 coins

I'll look into it because this is ridiculous. I shouldn't have to take a day off work just to reach Washington ESD.

0 coins

Quick question - do you lose your job search requirement exemption if you close and reopen a claim later?

0 coins

That would depend on your specific situation and why you had the exemption in the first place. You'd need to check with Washington ESD about your individual case.

0 coins

Makes sense. I'll probably call them if I need to reopen later.

0 coins

omg i forgot to file my weekly claim last week am i screwed???

0 coins

You can usually file for the previous week if you're just a few days late. Log into your account and see if the option is still there.

0 coins

ok ill try that thanks

0 coins

this whole unemployment system is so confusing. why cant they just make it simple

0 coins

Right? Everything requires like 5 different steps and forms.

0 coins

It's bureaucracy at its finest. But once you figure out the basics it gets easier.

0 coins

Update: I filed my final weekly claim this morning and reported my start date. Seems straightforward enough. Thanks everyone for the advice!

0 coins

Perfect! You handled it correctly. Good luck with the new job!

0 coins

Awesome! Hope the job goes well.

0 coins

Smart move. You should be all set now.

I had a similar situation but my new job fell through after 2 weeks. Had to reopen my claim and it was a nightmare dealing with Washington ESD about the gap.

0 coins

Oh no! What happened? Did they make you wait or anything?

0 coins

Yeah there was like a 3 week delay while they reviewed everything. Eventually got it sorted out but it was stressful.

0 coins

Does anyone know if you can reopen a claim that's been closed for 6 months?

0 coins

You'd probably need to file a new claim at that point. The benefit year has specific time limits.

0 coins

That's what I was afraid of. Thanks for the info.

0 coins

Congrats on the job! I'm still dealing with an adjudication issue that's been pending for 2 months. Washington ESD is so slow.

0 coins

Have you tried calling about the adjudication? Sometimes they need additional information and don't tell you. That Claimyr service I mentioned helped me get through to check on my adjudication status.

0 coins

I might have to try that. The waiting is killing me financially.

0 coins

For anyone reading this later: the key is just being honest and accurate on your final weekly claim filing. Washington ESD's system handles most claim closures automatically without issues.

0 coins

Exactly what I did and it worked fine. Thanks again for all the help everyone!

0 coins

Good summary. This thread was really helpful.

0 coins

Just want to add that if you have any standby status or union hiring hall requirements, make sure to notify them too about your return to work.

0 coins

Good point! I don't have standby status but that's important for people who do.

0 coins

The most important thing is don't keep filing weekly claims once you're working full time. That's how people get overpayment notices.

0 coins

yeah that makes sense. seems like common sense but good to confirm

0 coins

Exactly. The system relies on claimants being honest about their employment status.

0 coins

Final tip for anyone in this situation: if you need to reach Washington ESD for any reason related to closing your claim, Claimyr really is a game changer. Saved me hours of frustration and I actually got to talk to someone who could help.

0 coins

I was skeptical at first but honestly anything is better than trying to call Washington ESD directly. The hold times are insane.

0 coins

Good to know there are options. Hopefully I won't need to call but it's reassuring to know about this service.
