I just want to say that this whole process is so stressful. Having to prove you deserve benefits that you paid into for years is ridiculous.
For the original poster - since you have the layoff notice, your case sounds pretty straightforward. Just clearly explain that you were laid off due to company downsizing, not a voluntary quit, and include the documentation. You should be fine.
my cousin uses some service called claimyr or something to call washington esd for her, she says it actually works to get through to someone
Bottom line: 2-3 business days after certification is normal for Washington ESD. Anything longer than that and you should investigate. The exact day can vary but it shouldn't be wildly unpredictable.
Final advice: File immediately, be completely honest, document everything about your transportation situation, and don't get discouraged if you're initially denied. The appeal process exists for exactly these kinds of situations where the circumstances are complex.
Just to close this out - getting fired for tardiness due to public transportation issues is definitely not an automatic disqualification. You have a legitimate shot at benefits, especially if you can document the transportation problems were beyond your control.
Bottom line for your dad: file for regular unemployment benefits through Washington ESD, meet all the job search requirements, and don't let anyone tell him he's too old to receive benefits. Age discrimination in unemployment is illegal.
One more thing - if your dad worked for a large company, they might have offered voluntary separation packages that could affect his unemployment eligibility. Make sure Washington ESD knows about any severance or separation agreements.

Don't stress too much about the misconduct thing until you know if it's even an issue. File first, then deal with any challenges as they come up. You might be surprised - Washington ESD might not even flag your termination as misconduct.

•Thanks, I think I was overthinking it and psyching myself out.

•Overthinking is the enemy of action. Just file and see what happens.

Update us after you file! I'm curious how it goes since I might be in a similar situation soon with my current job situation.
