How to get your unemployment money from Washington ESD - claim processing delays
Been waiting 3 weeks now for my first unemployment payment from Washington ESD and getting really frustrated. I filed my initial claim online and it was accepted, been doing my weekly claims religiously every Sunday, completed my job search activities, but still no money in my account. The eServices portal just shows 'processing' for all my weekly claims. I've tried calling the unemployment office but can't get through - always busy signal or it hangs up after being on hold forever. How do other people actually get their unemployment money? What am I missing here?

The 3-week wait is actually pretty normal for first-time claims with Washington ESD. Your claim probably needs to go through adjudication first, especially if there's anything unusual about your separation from work or if they need to verify your identity. Keep filing your weekly claims even while waiting - you'll get backpay once it's approved.

•Thanks, that's somewhat reassuring. I was laid off from a restaurant job so nothing complicated there. Should I be worried that it's taking this long?

•Restaurant layoffs are usually straightforward, so you should be fine. The delay is likely just volume - Washington ESD is still dealing with higher claim numbers than pre-2020.

I had the same issue last month - couldn't get anyone on the phone at Washington ESD for weeks. Finally found this service called Claimyr that actually got me through to a real person at the unemployment office. They have some system that keeps calling until someone picks up. Ended up finding out my claim was stuck because of a simple ID verification issue that took 5 minutes to fix once I talked to an agent.

•Really? How does that work exactly? I'm getting desperate here, bills are piling up.

•You just go to claimyr.com and they handle the calling for you. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Way better than spending hours on hold yourself.

•That actually sounds helpful. I've been trying to reach Washington ESD for two weeks about my own claim issue and getting nowhere.

Check your eServices account under 'Correspondence' - sometimes Washington ESD sends messages there that you might miss. Also make sure you're reporting your job search activities correctly. They require 3 job contacts per week now and if you're not documenting them properly it can hold up your payments.

•I've been checking correspondence daily, nothing new there. I am doing my job searches through WorkSourceWA like they said. Maybe I should double-check those entries.

•Yeah definitely review those. And make sure you're answering all the weekly claim questions correctly - sometimes people accidentally say 'yes' to working when they mean 'no' and it flags the whole claim.

ugh the washington esd system is so broken. ive been waiting 5 weeks for my money and every time i call they just say 'keep waiting' like that pays my rent

Jamal Carter
•5 weeks?! That's terrible. What reason are they giving you for the delay?

•they said something about adjudication but wont tell me what exactly needs to be adjudicated. so frustrating

•If it's been 5 weeks in adjudication, you should definitely escalate this. That's longer than the typical review period.

I actually had success getting through to Washington ESD using that Claimyr service someone mentioned. Was skeptical at first but they got me connected within an hour. Turns out my employer had contested my claim and I never knew because the notice got lost in the mail. Agent helped me understand the next steps for the hearing.

Jamal Carter
•Wait, employers can contest claims? I had no idea. How do you find out if that happened?
0 coins
Fatima Al-Farsi
•Yeah, they have 10 days to respond after you file. Usually Washington ESD sends you a notice if there's a contest, but mail gets lost sometimes. An agent can tell you immediately if you can get through to one.

Have you tried calling right when they open? I set an alarm for 7:59am and start dialing at exactly 8:00am. Sometimes get through within the first few tries that way.

Jamal Carter
•I tried that twice but still got busy signals. Maybe I need to be faster with the redial.
0 coins
Dylan Cooper
•Yeah you have to redial immediately, like within seconds. I use auto-redial apps on my phone to help.

Liam O'Donnell
•That's exactly why I used Claimyr instead - they handle all that automated redialing so you don't have to sit there doing it manually for hours.

Make sure you're not missing any required steps. Did you complete the unemployment insurance tutorial? Some people skip that and it can delay processing. Also verify that your bank account info is correct in your profile - payments can get bounced back if there's a typo.

Jamal Carter
•I did the tutorial when I first filed. Bank info looks right but I'll double-check the routing number.

•Good idea. Also check if your bank accepts ACH transfers from government agencies - some smaller banks or credit unions have restrictions.

Been there. The waiting is the worst part. Just keep filing your weekly claims on time and eventually it'll come through. I got 6 weeks of backpay all at once when mine finally processed.
0 coins
Jamal Carter
•6 weeks of backpay sounds nice but I need money now for groceries and rent. Did you find any way to speed up the process?
0 coins
Sofia Perez
•Not really, just had to wait it out. Though I did hear about people using that calling service to actually talk to someone and get answers faster.

One thing to check - when you filed your initial claim, did you list the correct last day of work? If there's a discrepancy between what you reported and what your employer reported, it can trigger an investigation that delays everything.

Jamal Carter
•I'm pretty sure I got the date right but now you're making me second-guess myself. Is there a way to check what my employer reported?
0 coins
AstroExplorer
•An Washington ESD agent can see both sides of the information, but you'd need to get through to someone first. That's probably the fastest way to identify any discrepancies.

Same boat here - filed 4 weeks ago and still waiting. At least I know I'm not the only one dealing with this mess. Washington ESD really needs to hire more staff or fix their systems.

Jamal Carter
•It's somewhat comforting to know others are going through this too, but doesn't help with the bills. Have you tried any of the suggestions people mentioned here?

•I'm going to try that Claimyr thing next. Can't hurt at this point and I'm tired of getting nowhere with regular calling.

Quick tip - if you haven't already, sign up for text notifications in your eServices account. Washington ESD will send you updates about your claim status that way. Sometimes the text comes before the website updates.

Jamal Carter
•Oh I didn't know about text notifications! Going to set that up right now.

ElectricDreamer
•Yeah it's under account preferences. Helps you stay on top of any changes without constantly checking the website.

I hate to say this but you might want to contact your state representative's office if this drags on much longer. They have caseworkers who can sometimes help with Washington ESD issues when people get stuck in the system.

Jamal Carter
•Really? I didn't know legislators could help with unemployment claims. How does that work?

Ava Johnson
•They have constituent services that can make inquiries on your behalf. It's not guaranteed but sometimes agencies respond faster to official inquiries.

•That's good to know as a backup option, though hopefully it doesn't come to that for the OP.

Whatever you do, don't stop filing your weekly claims even if you're not getting paid yet. I made that mistake thinking there was no point, and it messed up my whole claim. Had to start over.
0 coins
Jamal Carter
•Yeah I've been filing every Sunday religiously. That would be devastating to have to start over after all this waiting.
0 coins
Miguel Diaz
•Exactly. The weekly claims keep your place in line basically. Miss too many and they assume you don't need the benefits anymore.

Have you checked if there are any outstanding issues listed in your account? Sometimes there are action items you need to complete that aren't obvious. Look for anything that says 'pending' or 'required.
0 coins
Jamal Carter
•I've looked through everything I can find in eServices but maybe I'm missing something. The main claim status just says 'processing' with no details.
0 coins
Zainab Ahmed
•If there's nothing obvious in the online account, then you really do need to talk to an agent to find out what's holding things up.

The system is definitely overwhelmed. I work in HR and see the delays from the employer side too. Washington ESD is still catching up from the pandemic backlog even though it's been years now.
0 coins
Jamal Carter
•That's helpful context from the employer perspective. Do you know if there's anything employers can do to help speed up their former employees' claims?
0 coins
Connor Byrne
•Not really once the claim is filed. We respond to any requests for information quickly, but after that it's all on Washington ESD's processing timeline.

I'm going to try that claimyr service too after reading these comments. Seems like actually talking to someone is the only way to get real answers about what's causing delays.

Jamal Carter
•Let me know how it goes! I'm considering it myself at this point.

•Will do. Definitely beats spending whole days trying to get through on my own.

Check if your claim shows any 'determination' letters in the correspondence section. Sometimes Washington ESD makes decisions but the letters don't make it through regular mail, and you miss important deadlines as a result.
0 coins
Jamal Carter
•I check correspondence every day but haven't seen any determination letters. Should I be worried if I don't see any?
0 coins
PixelPioneer
•Not necessarily - if your claim is still processing normally you might not have any determinations yet. But it's good to stay on top of checking.

Three weeks isn't that unusual unfortunately. I waited almost a month for my first payment. The key is making sure there aren't any issues that need your attention while you wait.
0 coins
Jamal Carter
•How do I find out if there are issues that need my attention if I can't get through to anyone?
0 coins
Keisha Williams
•That's the catch-22 with Washington ESD right now. You need to talk to someone but can't get through. That's why people are using services like that Claimyr thing.

Make sure you're answering the work search questions correctly on your weekly claims. If you accidentally mark that you refused work or weren't available, it can flag your whole claim for review.
0 coins
Jamal Carter
•I've been really careful with those questions but now I'm paranoid I made a mistake somewhere. Is there a way to see your previous answers?
0 coins
Paolo Rizzo
•You can see some of your previous weekly claim info in eServices, but not all the detailed answers. An agent could review it with you though.

Hang in there. I know it's stressful when you need the money now. The payments will come eventually with full backpay, you just have to get through this waiting period first.

Jamal Carter
•Thanks for the encouragement. It's hard to stay patient when bills are due, but sounds like persistence is key.
0 coins
Amina Sy
•Definitely. And don't hesitate to use any resources that can help you actually talk to someone at Washington ESD - that seems to be the fastest way to resolve delays.
