How to get money off Washington ESD unemployment card - ATM fees driving me crazy
I just got my Washington ESD debit card in the mail and I'm trying to figure out the best way to access my unemployment benefits without getting hit with crazy fees. I went to a random ATM yesterday and got charged $3.50 just to withdraw $40! There has to be a better way to get my money off this card. Does anyone know which ATMs are free or if there are other ways to access the funds without fees? I'm already struggling financially and these fees are making it worse.

Bank of America ATMs are free for the Washington ESD card. Also most grocery stores let you get cash back when you buy something, usually no fee for that either.

•Thanks! I didn't know about the grocery store cash back option. That's really helpful.

I had the same problem when I first got my card. You can also transfer the money to your regular bank account online through the KeyBank app or website. Takes a day or two but no fees.

•How do you set up the transfer? Is it through the KeyBank website?

Anastasia Sokolov
•Yes, you create an account on the KeyBank website using your card info, then add your bank account for transfers.

Been dealing with this for months and it's so frustrating trying to reach someone at Washington ESD about card issues. I actually found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to ESD agents when you can't reach them normally. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

•Interesting, never heard of that service before. Does it actually work for getting through to ESD?

•Yeah it worked for me when I had issues with my card being blocked. Way better than spending all day redialing the ESD number.

The Washington ESD card is issued by KeyBank, so any KeyBank ATM should be free too. You can use their ATM locator on their website to find the closest one. Also, some banks will let you withdraw money at the teller window without fees, but you'd have to ask each bank about their policy.

•Good to know about going to the teller window. I have a credit union nearby, maybe they'll do it.

•most credit unions are pretty good about not charging fees for stuff like that

Whatever you do, don't use those ATMs at gas stations or corner stores. They'll charge you like $4-5 per transaction. Stick to bank ATMs or grocery stores.

•Yeah I learned that the hard way! The gas station ATM was the worst.

•those convenience store ATMs are such a rip off, they prey on people who need cash fast

you can also use the card to pay for stuff directly instead of always withdrawing cash. works just like a regular debit card at most places

•True, but I still need some cash for things like laundry or places that don't take cards.

•yeah fair point, cash is still needed for some stuff

I've been using my Washington ESD card for 6 months now. The KeyBank website has a good ATM locator tool that shows you all the free ATMs near you. Also, if you're shopping at Safeway or QFC, you can get up to $200 cash back with no fees.

•$200 cash back? That's way more than I thought grocery stores would allow.

•Yeah, most grocery stores allow pretty high cash back amounts. Just buy something small and get your cash.

pro tip: if you're near a costco they usually have free ATMs too, even if you're not a member you can use the ATM

•Wait really? I thought you needed a membership to get into Costco at all.

Luca Esposito
•nah you can go to the pharmacy and ATM without a membership, just tell them at the door

The fees on this card are ridiculous. I get that they need to make money somehow but when people are unemployed, every dollar counts. Washington ESD should negotiate better terms with KeyBank.

•Totally agree. It's like they're profiting off people who are already struggling.

•at least there are free options if you know where to look, but yeah the default ATM fees are awful

Has anyone had problems with their card getting declined for no reason? Mine got blocked last week and I couldn't figure out why. Ended up having to call the KeyBank customer service number on the back of the card.

•Yeah that happened to me too. They said it was because I used it at too many different locations in one day.

•The fraud protection on these cards is really sensitive. I got blocked just for buying gas in a different city.

For anyone still having trouble reaching Washington ESD about card issues, I used Claimyr recently and it actually worked. They help you get through to an actual person instead of sitting on hold forever. Worth checking out if you're stuck.

•How much does that service cost? I'm hesitant to pay for something when I'm already unemployed.

•It's worth it if you're really stuck and can't get through. Beats spending entire days trying to call ESD directly.

I work at a bank and can confirm that most banks will let you withdraw money from the Washington ESD card at the teller window without fees. Just bring your ID and the card. Some banks might have limits on how much though.

•That's really helpful to know! I'll try my local bank branch next time.

•Thanks for the insider info! Do you know if there's a daily limit on teller withdrawals?

•It varies by bank but usually it's pretty high, like $500-1000 per day. Way more than most ATMs allow.

Just wanted to add that 7-Eleven ATMs are usually free too, at least the ones near me. And they're open 24/7 which is convenient.

CosmicCaptain
•Really? I thought 7-Eleven ATMs always had fees. Maybe it depends on the location.

Amara Oluwaseyi
•Might be regional. The ones in my area are Bank of America ATMs inside the 7-Eleven, so they're free for the ESD card.

honestly the best advice is to just use the card like a regular debit card whenever possible and only get cash when you absolutely need it. saves you from all the ATM fee headaches

Omar Fawaz
•Yeah that's probably the smartest approach. I was just used to dealing with cash more.

I set up automatic transfers from my KeyBank ESD card to my regular checking account every week. Takes the hassle out of dealing with ATM fees and I don't have to think about it.

•How do you set up automatic transfers? That sounds super convenient.

•Through the KeyBank online banking portal. You can schedule recurring transfers once you link your regular bank account.

Quick tip: if you're at a grocery store and want cash back, you usually have to buy something first. But you can buy something small like a pack of gum and still get cash back without fees.
0 coins
Omar Fawaz
•Good point! I was wondering about that. So you can't just walk up and ask for cash back without buying anything?

Dmitry Petrov
•Right, you need to make a purchase first. But it can be anything, even just a candy bar.

Been using this card for a year now and the key is just knowing where the free ATMs are. Download the KeyBank app and use their ATM locator. Saves you from those surprise fees.

•The app is actually pretty useful for tracking your spending too. Shows all your transactions in real time.

•I should probably download that app. Sounds like it would help me manage my money better.

I had a terrible experience trying to call Washington ESD when my card got frozen for suspicious activity. Spent 3 hours on hold and got disconnected. Finally used Claimyr and got through to someone in 20 minutes. Game changer.

For what it's worth, I've never had issues with fees at Bank of America ATMs or using the card for purchases. The problems only come when you use random ATMs or don't know where the free ones are.

Omar Fawaz
•Yeah I think I just need to plan better and know where the free ATMs are before I need cash.

Thanks everyone for all the tips! This has been really helpful. I had no idea there were so many ways to avoid the fees. Going to try the grocery store cash back option first since there's a Safeway right by my house.

•Glad this thread helped! The ESD card doesn't come with great instructions so it's easy to get hit with fees if you don't know the tricks.
