How to use Washington ESD unemployment debit card - first time getting one
Just got approved for unemployment after waiting 6 weeks in adjudication and Washington ESD sent me this KeyBank debit card but I'm honestly confused about how it works. Do I need to activate it before I can use it? Can I use it at any ATM or just specific ones? Also wondering if there are fees for using it and if I can transfer money from it to my regular bank account. This is my first time on unemployment so any advice would be helpful!

Yes you definitely need to activate it first! Call the number on the back of the card or go to the KeyBank website. You can use it at most ATMs but KeyBank ATMs are free, others might charge fees. For transfers to your bank account, you can do that through the KeyBank app or website once you set up online access.

•Thank you! Do you know if there's a daily limit on how much I can withdraw from ATMs?

•I think it's like $500 per day for ATM withdrawals but you can check your specific limits once you activate and log in online.

The KeyBank unemployment card is pretty straightforward once you get used to it. You can use it anywhere that takes debit cards - grocery stores, gas stations, online purchases, etc. Just make sure to select 'credit' instead of 'debit' when you're at checkout to avoid PIN fees at some places.

•Oh that's a good tip about selecting credit! I didn't know that could save on fees.

•wait i thought you always had to use your PIN? i've been doing it wrong this whole time

•Nope! You can run it as credit and just sign instead of entering PIN. Sometimes saves money depending on where you shop.

For transferring money to your regular bank account, I'd recommend setting up the online account first. You can do one-time transfers or set up automatic transfers so your unemployment payments go straight to your main account. Much easier than having to remember to move money every week.

•That sounds perfect! Is there a fee for the transfers?

•I don't think there's a fee for standard transfers but double check when you set it up. The automatic transfer option is really convenient.

I had so much trouble getting through to KeyBank when I first got my card. Spent hours on hold trying to activate it. Finally found out about claimyr.com which helped me get through to someone at Washington ESD about card issues. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Super helpful when you can't reach anyone by phone.

•Interesting, I'll check that out if I run into problems. Hopefully the activation goes smoothly though!

One thing to watch out for - if you don't use the card for a while, they might charge an inactivity fee. I learned that the hard way when I went back to work and forgot about the card for a few months. Still had like $20 on it and they took a chunk for the fee.

Tristan Carpenter
•Good to know! How long do you have to not use it before they charge the fee?

•I think it was like 90 days or something. Just make sure to use it or transfer the money out if you go back to work.

•ugh that's so annoying that they charge fees like that

Also FYI - your unemployment payments will automatically load onto the card each week after you file your weekly claim. Usually shows up within 1-2 business days of filing. You'll get a text notification when the money is loaded if you sign up for alerts.

•That's good to know about the timing. I was wondering when the money would actually show up.

Make sure you keep track of your balance! The KeyBank app is pretty good for checking your balance and transaction history. You don't want to overdraft because they'll charge you fees for that too.

•Good point! I'll download the app once I get the card activated.

I remember being confused about this too when I first got on unemployment. The card works just like any other debit card once you get it set up. Don't overthink it! Just activate it and start using it for your regular purchases.

Pro tip: if you're planning to make a large purchase, you might want to call KeyBank first to let them know. Sometimes they flag unusual spending patterns as potential fraud and will freeze your card.

•Oh wow, I wouldn't have thought of that. Thanks for the heads up!

Does anyone know if you can use this card internationally? I have a trip planned and wondering if I need to do anything special.

Grant Vikers
•You'd need to call KeyBank and let them know about international travel. They usually put a travel notice on your account so it doesn't get flagged.

•Makes sense, thanks! I'll call them before I leave.

Been using mine for about 8 months now and it's been pretty reliable. Only issue I had was when I forgot my PIN and had to get it reset. That was kind of a pain but KeyBank customer service eventually helped me out.

•Good to hear it's been working well for you overall. How long did it take to get the PIN reset?

•I think it took about a week to get the new PIN in the mail. They couldn't do it over the phone for security reasons.

Just want to add that you should keep all your receipts and check your statements regularly. I caught a few charges that didn't look right and KeyBank was able to reverse them. Better to catch fraud early!

The direct deposit option is really the way to go if you can set it up. I was tired of dealing with the card and all the little fees, so I switched to having my unemployment payments deposited directly into my checking account. Much simpler.

Tristan Carpenter
•How do you set up direct deposit for unemployment payments? Is that something you do through Washington ESD?
0 coins
Kaitlyn Otto
•Yeah you log into your Washington ESD account online and update your payment method. Takes a week or two to switch over but worth it.

•I didn't know you could do direct deposit! That would save me so much hassle.

Whatever you do, don't lose the card! I lost mine and it was such a headache to get a replacement. Had to wait like 10 days for a new one and my unemployment payment was stuck on the old card during that time.

Tristan Carpenter
•Yikes! I'll definitely be careful with it. Did you have to pay for the replacement card?
0 coins
Jasmine Hernandez
•I think there was a small fee for the replacement, maybe $5 or $10. Not terrible but annoying when you're already dealing with the inconvenience.

Been reading through all these comments and they're super helpful! I'm in the same boat as the original poster - just got my card but haven't activated it yet. Sounds like the main things are: activate it first, download the app, be aware of fees, and consider setting up direct deposit instead. Thanks everyone!

One more tip - if you're having trouble with the KeyBank website or app, try using a different browser or clearing your cache. Sometimes their system is finicky and that fixes it.

I wish Washington ESD would just offer direct deposit as the default option instead of making everyone deal with these cards. Seems like it would be simpler for everyone involved.

•I think they have some kind of contract with KeyBank that makes them money, so they push the cards instead of direct deposit.

•Makes sense from a business perspective but annoying for us claimants who just want our money without all the extra steps.

Final update from my experience - I used claimyr.com again last month when I had issues with my card being declined at multiple places. Turned out Washington ESD had flagged my account for some reason and I needed to talk to someone to clear it up. The service worked great for getting through to an actual person who could help.
