How to get unemployment card from Washington ESD - lost mine weeks ago

I've been approved for unemployment benefits for about 6 weeks now but I still haven't received my unemployment debit card from Washington ESD. My first payment was supposed to go on the card but I have no idea where it is or how to get a replacement. I've tried calling the customer service number but can never get through. Does anyone know the process for getting a new unemployment card or how long it usually takes? I'm really struggling without access to my benefits.

The unemployment debit cards are issued by KeyBank for Washington ESD. You should have received it within 7-10 business days after your first payment was processed. If you haven't gotten it by now, you'll need to contact KeyBank directly at 1-866-295-2955 to report it as lost or stolen and request a replacement.

Thank you! I didn't realize it was through KeyBank. I'll call them today.

0 coins

That KeyBank number is usually easier to get through than the main Washington ESD line in my experience.

I had the same problem last month! My card never showed up and I was freaking out. Turns out it was sent to my old address even though I updated everything on my Washington ESD account. When I called KeyBank they expedited a new one to my correct address for free.

0 coins

Did you have to verify your identity when you called? I'm worried they won't send it without jumping through hoops.

0 coins

They just asked for my SSN and DOB, plus the last 4 digits of my claim number. Pretty straightforward.

Have you tried calling Washington ESD during off-peak hours? I know everyone says to call at 8am but honestly I've had better luck around 2-3pm. The wait times are still brutal though. You might want to try claimyr.com - they help people get through to Washington ESD agents faster. I used them last week and actually got connected within 20 minutes instead of waiting hours.

Never heard of claimyr before. Is it legit or one of those scam services?

0 coins

It's totally legitimate. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows exactly how it works. You don't give them any personal info, they just help you navigate the phone system.

While you're waiting for your card, you should be able to check if your payments are being processed through your SecureAccess Washington account. Log into eServices and look at your payment history. If the payments are showing as 'paid' but you don't have the card, then it's definitely a card delivery issue.

0 coins

I checked and it shows two payments as 'paid' but I obviously can't access the money. So frustrating!

0 coins

That confirms it's a card issue, not a payment issue. Definitely call KeyBank to get a replacement expedited.

0 coins

the whole debit card system is so stupid why cant they just do direct deposit like normal people

0 coins

You can actually switch to direct deposit! You just need to call Washington ESD and request it. Takes about 2 weeks to process the change.

0 coins

wait really? nobody told me that when i filed

I went through this exact situation in December. My card was stolen from my mailbox and I didn't realize it until I tried to use it. KeyBank was actually really helpful - they cancelled the old card immediately and sent me a new one with expedited shipping. The whole process took about 3 business days.

0 coins

That's reassuring to hear. Did you have to pay for the expedited shipping?

0 coins

Nope, they covered it since it was the first replacement. If you need multiple replacements they might charge you.

0 coins

Same thing happened to my neighbor. She called KeyBank and they told her the card was mailed but never activated. Sometimes they get lost in the mail or delivered to the wrong address. The replacement took less than a week once she called.

0 coins

Good to know. I'm definitely calling KeyBank first thing tomorrow morning.

0 coins

Just a heads up - when you do get your card, make sure to activate it right away! I made the mistake of letting mine sit for a week before activating and then had issues with my account being flagged for suspicious activity.

0 coins

Thanks for the tip! I'll activate it the minute I get it.

0 coins

Yeah Washington ESD is really strict about activation timeframes. I think you have like 30 days or something.

I had to get a replacement card twice because the first replacement also got lost. KeyBank was still helpful the second time but they did ask more questions about my address and delivery preferences. Just be prepared for that if you have ongoing mail issues.

0 coins

Were you able to have it delivered to a different address, like a PO box?

0 coins

Yes, they let me use my work address for the second replacement. Much more secure than my apartment mailbox.

0 coins

The waiting game is awful. I remember checking my mailbox every single day for two weeks straight. At least once you get the card, you can access all your back payments immediately. It's not like you lose the money while waiting.

0 coins

That's what I keep telling myself but my rent is due in a few days and I'm getting really stressed.

0 coins

I totally understand. Maybe see if KeyBank can expedite the shipping for free given your situation?

0 coins

Pro tip: if you're having trouble getting through to KeyBank, try calling right when they open at 7am PST. Their hold times are much shorter first thing in the morning. I learned this the hard way after spending hours on hold during peak times.

0 coins

Good advice. I'll set my alarm and call first thing tomorrow.

While you're dealing with this, make sure you keep filing your weekly claims! I know it's frustrating not having the card but you still need to certify each week or you'll lose your benefits. The payments will just stack up on the card once you get it.

0 coins

Yes, I've been staying on top of my weekly claims. Just certified for this week yesterday.

0 coins

Perfect! At least you won't have any gaps in your benefits when this gets resolved.

I remember when I first got my unemployment card I was so paranoid about losing it that I took a photo of both sides and stored it in my phone. Obviously don't share those photos with anyone, but it's helpful to have the card number written down somewhere safe.

0 coins

That's actually a really smart idea. I'll do that once I get my replacement.

0 coins

Does anyone know if you can check your card balance online before you receive the physical card? I'm in a similar situation and wondering if there's a way to at least see that the money is there.

0 coins

You need the card number to set up online access, so unfortunately no. But your Washington ESD account will show you the payment history.

0 coins

Ah okay, that makes sense. Thanks for clarifying.

0 coins

Another option if you're really struggling - some credit unions or banks will give you a small emergency loan if you can show proof of your unemployment benefits. Not ideal but it might help bridge the gap until your card arrives.

0 coins

I hadn't thought of that. I'll check with my bank to see what options they have.

0 coins

I know this is frustrating but try to stay calm when you call KeyBank. I got really worked up during my call and the representative was less helpful than they could have been. A friendly tone goes a long way with customer service.

0 coins

Good reminder. I'm definitely stressed but I'll try to keep it together on the call.

0 coins

Just wanted to mention that if you end up needing to call Washington ESD for any reason related to this, Claimyr really does work. I was skeptical at first but after waiting 3 hours on hold one day, I tried it and got through in under 30 minutes. Definitely worth checking out if the KeyBank route doesn't work.

0 coins

I'll keep that in mind as a backup plan. Hopefully KeyBank can resolve this quickly.

0 coins

Yeah, hopefully you won't need it but it's good to know it exists. The video demo really shows how straightforward it is.

0 coins

Update us when you get your card! I'm curious to hear how long the whole process takes. Always helpful for others who might be in the same situation.

0 coins

Absolutely! I'll post an update once I get it resolved. Thanks everyone for all the helpful advice.

0 coins

One last thing - once you get your card, you can set up text alerts for when payments are deposited. It's really helpful for tracking your benefits and making sure everything is processing correctly.

0 coins

That sounds like a great feature. I'll definitely set that up. Thanks for the tip!

I went through this exact same situation about 3 months ago! My card was supposedly mailed but never arrived. I called KeyBank at 1-866-295-2955 and they were able to see that the card was indeed mailed but never activated, which usually means it got lost in transit. They sent me a replacement with expedited shipping at no charge and I had it within 4 business days. Make sure you have your SSN, DOB, and claim number ready when you call. Also, I found calling right when they open at 7am PST gets you through much faster than calling during peak hours. Don't worry - all your back payments will be available as soon as you activate the new card!

0 coins

This is super helpful, thank you! I was getting really worried that I'd lose all those payments while waiting. Having the exact number and knowing what info to have ready makes me feel much more confident about calling tomorrow morning. I'll definitely try calling right at 7am like you suggested.

0 coins

This gives me so much hope! I've been stressed about this for weeks thinking I might have lost my benefits somehow. Knowing that all the back payments will be there once I get the card is a huge relief. I'm definitely calling KeyBank at 7am sharp tomorrow with all my info ready. Thanks for sharing your experience - it's exactly what I needed to hear!
