What debit card does Washington ESD unemployment use for benefit payments?
I just got approved for unemployment benefits and Washington ESD said they'll send me a debit card but didn't specify which company. Does anyone know what debit card Washington ESD uses for unemployment payments? I want to know what fees to expect and where I can use it without getting charged. Also wondering how long it takes to arrive after approval.

Washington ESD uses KeyBank for their unemployment debit cards. It's called the KeyBank Reliacard. You can use it anywhere Visa is accepted and there are no fees at KeyBank ATMs or when you use it as credit at stores.

•Thanks! How long did it take for yours to arrive? My first payment is supposed to be issued this week.

•Mine took about 7-10 business days from when I got the approval email. You can track it online once they send it.

Yeah it's KeyBank Reliacard. Just be careful about ATM fees if you use other banks' ATMs. I got hit with a $3 fee the first time because I didn't realize.

•Good to know! Are there KeyBank ATMs everywhere or should I plan to use it as credit mostly?

•There's a decent amount of KeyBank ATMs around Washington but you can also use it at any ATM that doesn't charge fees. The card website has an ATM locator.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to ask about your card status, I discovered this service called Claimyr that actually connects you to real agents. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

•Interesting, I'll check that out. I tried calling Washington ESD yesterday and gave up after 2 hours on hold.

•Is that legit? Sounds too good to be true with how impossible it is to reach anyone at Washington ESD these days.

•Yeah it's real, I used it last month when my weekly claim got stuck. Much easier than the regular phone system.

The KeyBank card is pretty convenient once you get it. You can check your balance online or with their app. Just make sure to activate it as soon as it arrives or your payments might get delayed.

•Do I need to do anything special to activate it or just call the number on the card?

Anastasia Romanov
•Just call the activation number on the sticker. You'll need your SSN and some other basic info. Takes like 5 minutes.

ugh the keybank card is such a pain! Why can't they just do direct deposit like normal jobs?? I hate having to remember another card and PIN.

•You can actually set up direct deposit instead of using the card. There's an option in your Washington ESD account to switch payment methods.

•WAIT REALLY?? Why didn't anyone tell me this 6 months ago when I first filed?!

•Yeah go to your SecureAccess Washington account and look under payment preferences. Takes a few weeks to switch over though.

The KeyBank Reliacard has been pretty reliable for me. Only issue I had was when I tried to use it at a gas pump and it got declined because of the hold amount. Had to go inside and pay the cashier instead.

•Oh that's annoying. Is that a common problem with the card?

•It happens sometimes at gas stations because they put a temporary hold for like $100 even if you're only buying $20 in gas. The card doesn't always have enough for the hold.

Question about the KeyBank card - can you transfer money from it to your regular bank account? I don't want to carry around yet another card if I don't have to.

Freya Johansen
•Yes you can transfer online through the KeyBank card website. I think there might be a small fee for transfers but it's better than carrying two cards around.

•Perfect, that's exactly what I wanted to know. Thanks!

Just got my KeyBank unemployment card last week. The packaging is pretty obvious what it is so heads up if you don't want your neighbors knowing your business lol

•Good point, I hadn't thought about that. Is it in a plain envelope or does it say unemployment on it?

Zara Malik
•It says KeyBank on the outside but nothing about unemployment specifically. Still pretty obvious if you know what to look for though.

Does anyone know if the KeyBank card works internationally? I have family in Canada and wondering if I can use it there in emergencies.

Freya Johansen
•It should work anywhere Visa is accepted but you'll probably get hit with international fees. Check the card terms when you get it.

•Makes sense, I'll look into that. Hopefully won't need it but good to know.

Pro tip: download the KeyBank app before your card arrives so you can set it up right away. Makes checking your balance and transaction history much easier than calling the phone number.

CosmosCaptain
•Great idea! Can you set up the app before you get the physical card?

Nia Thompson
•You need the card number to set up the app, so you have to wait until it arrives. But you can download it ahead of time.

I've been using the KeyBank unemployment card for 8 months now and honestly it's been fine. Way better than the old paper checks they used to mail out that took forever to clear.

•They used to mail paper checks? That sounds like it would take forever.

•Yeah this was like 10 years ago when I was on unemployment the first time. The debit card system is much faster and more convenient.

Quick question - do you get charged fees for checking your balance at ATMs? I'm paranoid about getting nickel and dimed to death.

Freya Johansen
•No fees for balance inquiries at KeyBank ATMs. Other banks might charge you but that's their fee, not KeyBank's.

•Good to know, I'll stick to KeyBank ATMs for balance checks then.

Has anyone had issues with the card getting declined even when you have money on it? Mine got declined at the grocery store yesterday and I had like $400 on it.

Freya Johansen
•That's weird, maybe call KeyBank customer service? Could be a fraud hold or something wrong with the card itself.

GalacticGladiator
•Yeah I'll call them today. It was embarrassing having to leave my groceries at the checkout.

•If you need to reach someone about card issues quickly, that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier might be able to connect you to Washington ESD to check if there's a problem on their end too.

The KeyBank card is decent but I wish Washington ESD would give us more payment options. Some states let you choose between different banks or payment methods.

Anastasia Romanov
•You can do direct deposit to your own bank account if you prefer that over the card.

Ethan Brown
•Yeah but that takes weeks to set up and I needed the money right away when I first filed.

just wanted to say thanks for this thread! I was wondering the same thing and now I know what to expect when my card arrives 👍

One more thing about the KeyBank card - make sure you keep your PIN safe and don't write it down anywhere obvious. Friend of mine had his card stolen and they cleaned out his unemployment benefits because he had the PIN written on a piece of paper in his wallet.

CosmosCaptain
•Yikes, that's terrible! Did he get the money back?

•It took like 2 months and a lot of paperwork but KeyBank eventually refunded the fraudulent charges. Still a huge hassle though.

For anyone still waiting on their card, you can call KeyBank customer service to check if it's been mailed yet. The number should be on the Washington ESD website.

•That's helpful! I'll try that if mine doesn't show up by next week.

I switched to direct deposit after using the KeyBank card for a few months. Way more convenient and I don't have to worry about losing another card or remembering another PIN.
0 coins
CosmosCaptain
•How long did the switch take? I'm thinking about doing that too.
0 coins
Zoe Dimitriou
•About 3 weeks from when I submitted the direct deposit form. You still get the card payments until the switch goes through.

Overall the KeyBank Reliacard system works pretty well for Washington unemployment. Just treat it like any other debit card and you shouldn't have problems.

•Thanks everyone for all the helpful info! Feel much better prepared now.

•Agreed! I just got my KeyBank Reliacard last week and it's been working fine so far. The activation process was super quick too - literally took 5 minutes on the phone. One thing I'd add is to make sure you check the card balance regularly through the app since payments can take a day or two to show up after Washington ESD processes them.
