When will my Washington ESD unemployment card come after approval?
Got my UI claim approved by Washington ESD last Tuesday and they said my debit card would be mailed out. It's been 6 days now and still nothing in the mail. I'm getting worried something went wrong. How long does it usually take for the unemployment debit card to arrive? I really need to access my benefits soon to pay rent.

Usually takes 7-10 business days from when Washington ESD processes your first payment. Since you just got approved Tuesday, it might not have been processed until Wednesday or Thursday. Give it until next week before worrying.

•That makes me feel better. I was panicking thinking they sent it to the wrong address or something.

The Washington ESD debit card comes from KeyBank and they mail it standard USPS. If you need to check the status or if it's been more than 10 business days, you can call KeyBank directly at the number on the Washington ESD website. They can tell you when it was mailed and even expedite a replacement if needed.

•Good to know about KeyBank! I'll save that number just in case.

•KeyBank was actually pretty helpful when my card got lost in the mail. They overnighted a replacement for free.

This is exactly why I hate dealing with Washington ESD. Everything takes forever and they never give you realistic timeframes. I waited 12 days for my card and when I called they acted like that was normal. Meanwhile bills are piling up and landlords don't care that the state is slow.

•I get the frustration but 7-10 days is pretty standard for any bank card mailing. Most people just don't realize because they're used to getting cards instantly at bank branches.

•Sure but when you're desperate for money because you lost your job, every day feels like forever. They should offer expedited shipping or something.

Had the same anxiety when I was waiting for mine! What helped me was using Claimyr to actually get through to a Washington ESD agent who confirmed my card had been ordered and gave me the exact date it was mailed. Way better than wondering and stressing. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of that but sounds helpful. Did they charge you for it?

•They have different options but honestly just getting through to someone who could confirm my card status was worth it for the peace of mind.

also make sure you activated online banking with esd when you filed your claim, that way you can see when payments are actually processed even before the card arrives

•I think I did but I'll double check. Thanks for the tip!

•Good point - the SecureAccess Washington account will show payment history even if you can't access the money yet.

Mine got delivered to my old address even though I updated my info with Washington ESD. Had to go pick it up from my previous landlord. Make sure your address is correct in your account!

•Oh no that would be a nightmare. I'll check my address right now.

•Yeah definitely check. The mailing address has to be updated separately from your regular contact info sometimes.

Pro tip: once you get the card, set up direct deposit instead. It's faster and you don't have to worry about cards getting lost or stolen. You can change it in your Washington ESD account under payment preferences.

•Can I switch to direct deposit right away or do I have to use the card first?

Sofia Martinez
•You can switch anytime. I'd recommend getting the card first just in case, then switching to direct deposit for future payments.

•Direct deposit is definitely the way to go. Money shows up in my account every Tuesday like clockwork.

I remember this exact feeling! The waiting is the worst part. My card came on day 8 and I literally ran to the ATM. Just hang in there, it's coming.

•Thank you for the encouragement! I feel like I'm checking my mailbox five times a day.

•Haha I did the same thing. Even asked my mail carrier if he had anything from KeyBank.

Is this your first UI claim? The first card always takes longer because they have to verify everything and set up your account with KeyBank. Subsequent cards if you lose one or whatever are much faster.

•Yes it's my first time filing for unemployment. Good to know the process gets faster if I ever need it again (hopefully not!).

•Yeah hopefully you won't need it again but at least now you know what to expect with the timing.

Just an update on my earlier complaint - I actually tried that Claimyr thing someone mentioned and it worked! Got through to Washington ESD in like 10 minutes instead of spending hours on hold. The agent confirmed my card was mailed 3 days ago so should be here soon. Pretty impressed honestly.

•Wait what is this Claimyr thing? I've been trying to reach Washington ESD for weeks about my own issues.

•@profile12 it's like a service that helps you get through to ESD agents. Check claimyr.com - way better than sitting on hold forever.

Don't forget to keep filing your weekly claims even while waiting for the card! A lot of people think they should wait but you need to keep certifying or you'll miss payments.

•Yes I've been doing my weekly claims every Sunday. Thanks for the reminder though!

The KeyBank card actually has decent ATM access if you stick to their network. But yeah waiting for it sucks. At least Washington ESD is processing claims faster now than they were a couple years ago.

•Good to know about the ATM network. I'll look up which ones are nearby once I get the card.

•You can also use it anywhere Mastercard is accepted, not just ATMs. Pretty convenient actually.

I work for a credit union and can confirm that 7-10 business days is standard for any debit card mailing. The postal service just isn't faster than that for regular mail. Some banks offer expedited shipping but I don't think KeyBank does that for the Washington ESD cards.

•That's helpful to know from someone in banking. Makes me feel less like Washington ESD is being slow on purpose.

•Nope it's just the reality of physical mail. Everything seems instant now but cards still have to be printed and mailed the old fashioned way.

Update: My card arrived today (day 9)! Thanks everyone for the reassurance. Now I can finally pay my bills. This whole unemployment thing is stressful enough without worrying about when you'll actually see the money.
