Where can I cash my Washington ESD unemployment check without a bank account?

I just got my first unemployment check from Washington ESD but I don't have a bank account right now. Does anyone know where I can cash it? I tried a few places but they want to charge me crazy fees. Are there any free options or cheaper places that will cash unemployment checks?

Most grocery stores will cash unemployment checks for a small fee. Try Safeway, QFC, or Fred Meyer - they usually charge around $3-5. Walmart also cashes them but there might be a limit on the amount.

Thanks! I'll try Safeway first since it's closest to me. Do you know if they need any special ID or just my driver's license?

0 coins

Just your driver's license should be fine. Make sure it's not expired though - they're pretty strict about that.

why dont you just get direct deposit set up with washington esd? way easier than dealing with paper checks

I don't have a bank account right now, that's the whole problem. Had to close my old one due to fees piling up.

0 coins

oh sorry didnt read that part. maybe look into opening a free checking account somewhere first?

Check cashing stores are an option but they'll charge you percentage fees which can be expensive. Credit unions sometimes offer free check cashing services to members, and some have very low membership requirements. You might also try calling Washington ESD to see if they can help you set up a prepaid debit card option.

I've been trying to call Washington ESD for weeks but can never get through. The lines are always busy or I get disconnected after waiting forever.

Have you tried using Claimyr? I discovered it recently when I was having the same problem getting through to Washington ESD. It's this service that helps you actually reach a real person at claimyr.com. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of frustration.

0 coins

Never heard of that before. Is it legit? How much does it cost?

0 coins

Yeah it's totally legitimate. They focus on the value of actually getting through rather than you sitting on hold all day. Much better than wasting your time redialing constantly.

I had the same problem last year. Wells Fargo will cash Washington ESD checks even if you don't have an account there, but they charge like $7.50. Bank of America was even worse at $15. The grocery store route is definitely cheaper.

0 coins

That's ridiculous that banks charge so much when they're the ones who should be helping people access their money.

0 coins

Tell me about it. The whole system is designed to squeeze money out of people who are already struggling financially.

0 coins

Some 7-Elevens and other convenience stores will cash checks too but definitely call ahead to make sure. The fees vary a lot between different locations.

0 coins

Good idea, I'll call around first to compare fees. Thanks for the tip!

Also make sure you endorse the back of the check properly before you go. Some places are really picky about how you sign it.

0 coins

How should I sign it? Just my regular signature?

0 coins

Yeah just sign it exactly like your name appears on your ID. Don't add any extra words or anything.

I use Money Mart for cashing my unemployment checks. They charge about 3% but they're open late and on weekends which is convenient. There's probably one near you.

0 coins

3% can add up though. On a $400 check that's $12 in fees.

0 coins

True, but sometimes you need the convenience factor. Better than not being able to access your money at all.

0 coins

If you're getting regular unemployment payments, seriously consider opening a basic checking account somewhere. Even with monthly fees it'll probably be cheaper than paying to cash every check.

0 coins

That's probably smart long-term. Do you know which banks have the lowest fees for basic accounts?

0 coins

Credit unions usually have the best deals. BECU is popular here in Washington and has pretty reasonable fees.

0 coins

Also look into online banks like Chime or Capital One 360. They often have no monthly fees at all.

0 coins

Whatever you do, avoid those payday loan places for check cashing. They'll charge you way more than anywhere else and try to sell you other expensive services.

0 coins

Good to know, I'll stay away from those. Thanks for the warning.

Some Costcos will cash checks if you have a membership, but I think there might be restrictions on government checks. Worth asking if you're already a member.

0 coins

I don't think Costco cashes unemployment checks, just payroll checks from employers.

0 coins

You might be right, I'm not 100% sure about unemployment checks specifically.

0 coins

Call Washington ESD and ask about switching to their debit card program. That way you don't have to deal with cashing checks at all. But yeah, good luck getting through to them on the phone...

0 coins

That Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier might actually help with getting through to Washington ESD. I've been meaning to try it myself since I can never reach them either.

0 coins

Yeah, at this point I'm willing to try anything to avoid sitting on hold for hours just to get hung up on.

I work at a grocery store and we cash unemployment checks all the time. Just bring your ID and make sure the check isn't more than 30 days old. Some stores have daily limits on how much they'll cash too.

0 coins

That's really helpful insider info, thanks! What's a typical daily limit?

0 coins

Usually around $500-1000 depending on the store policy. Unemployment checks are usually under that amount anyway.

0 coins

If you're near a casino, they often have check cashing services too. Fees are usually competitive with grocery stores.

0 coins

That's an interesting option I never would have thought of.

0 coins

Whatever you do, don't lose that check! If it gets lost or stolen, getting a replacement from Washington ESD takes forever. I learned that the hard way.

0 coins

Yikes, I'll be extra careful with it. How long did it take to get your replacement?

0 coins

Almost 3 weeks, and that was after multiple phone calls trying to get through to them. The whole process was a nightmare.

0 coins

This is exactly why that Claimyr service could be worth it. Having a way to actually reach Washington ESD when you need them is valuable when stuff like this happens.

0 coins

Just remember that wherever you cash it, they might hold your ID while they process the check. Don't panic if they keep it for a few minutes - that's normal.

0 coins

Good to know, I would definitely have panicked if they took my ID without warning me first.

0 coins

Some credit unions will cash checks for free even if you're not a member, as long as the check is drawn on their bank. Might be worth calling around to ask.

0 coins

I think unemployment checks are usually drawn on major banks like Wells Fargo or Bank of America, so this could actually work.

0 coins

Pro tip: if you're going to a grocery store, try to go during off-peak hours. The customer service desk gets really busy during lunch and after work, so you might wait longer.

0 coins

That's smart thinking. I'll try to go mid-morning when it's less crowded.

0 coins

Make sure you have a backup plan in case the first place won't cash it for some reason. Sometimes they have weird policies or daily limits that aren't obvious until you get there.

0 coins

Definitely will have a few options lined up. Thanks everyone for all the great suggestions!
