Does Walmart cash Washington ESD unemployment checks - need help fast
My Washington ESD payment came as a paper check this week instead of direct deposit (something went wrong with my bank info) and I need to cash it today to pay rent. Does anyone know if Walmart will cash unemployment checks from Washington ESD? I don't have a bank account right now and really need to get this money fast. The check is for $1,847 if that matters for their limits.

Yes Walmart will cash Washington ESD checks but they charge like $4-8 depending on the amount. You'll need your ID and the check can't be more than $5000. Should be fine for your amount.

•Thank you! Do you know if all Walmart locations do this or just certain ones?

•Most locations with a Money Center should be able to do it. Call ahead to make sure they're not having system issues.

be careful with those fees though, they add up fast if you're cashing every week. maybe look into getting a bank account or credit union?

•I know but my bank closed my account over some stupid fees and I haven't had time to open a new one with all this job searching

•Check out local credit unions - many have second chance banking programs and lower fees than big banks.

Wait why did you get a paper check? My Washington ESD payments have always been direct deposit. Did something happen with your account?

•My bank account got closed and I forgot to update my payment info on the Washington ESD website before my weekly claim processed

•You should be able to update your direct deposit info in your SecureAccess Washington account for future payments

Rachel Clark
•Yeah I already did that but this week's payment had already processed as a check

I've been having issues getting through to Washington ESD to ask about my payment method changes too. Their phone lines are always busy and I've been on hold for hours. Actually found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

•How much does that cost? I'm already struggling financially

•It's worth checking out their site for details, but for me it was worth it to actually talk to someone instead of wasting entire days trying to get through

•I might need this if I have more issues with my payment method. Thanks for sharing

For future reference, you can also cash government checks at most grocery stores like Safeway or QFC, though they also charge fees. Some charge less than Walmart.

•QFC charged me $7 last time for a $400 check, seemed high

•Yeah the fees vary a lot. Always ask before you hand over the check.

also make sure you have your social security card or other secondary ID with you, some places are picky about just having a driver's license

Rachel Clark
•Good point, I'll bring my passport just in case

Harper Thompson
•passport should definitely work, that's better than most secondary IDs

Why can't you just mobile deposit it with your phone? Most banking apps let you do that now even without having the physical bank

•I don't have a bank account right now, that's the whole problem

•oh sorry missed that part, my bad

•You need an active account to use mobile deposit anyway

I had the same issue last month when Washington ESD sent me a paper check instead of direct deposit. Went to Walmart and they cashed it no problem. Just be prepared to wait in line at customer service.

•How long was the wait? I really need to get this done today

•Wasn't too bad, maybe 15-20 minutes on a weekday afternoon

Make sure to keep your receipt and take a photo of the cashed check for your records. Sometimes there are issues with payment tracking on the Washington ESD side.

Rachel Clark
•Good advice, I'll definitely do that

Ella Lewis
•Yeah Washington ESD's system isn't always great at tracking when checks get cashed vs direct deposits

Check cashing places like Money Tree or Cash America will also do it but their fees are usually higher than Walmart

•Money Tree wanted like $15 for my $300 check last year, ridiculous

•Yeah those places are expensive but sometimes they're more convenient location-wise

Just curious - how long did it take for Washington ESD to mail you the check after your payment date? Mine usually hits direct deposit the same day but wondering about paper checks
0 coins
Rachel Clark
•It took about 5 business days from when I filed my weekly claim to getting the check in the mail

Alexis Renard
•That's not too bad actually, good to know for future reference

•Paper checks always take longer but at least they're reliable once you get them

Pro tip: if you're going to be cashing unemployment checks regularly, consider getting a prepaid debit card that allows direct deposits. Some have lower fees than constantly cashing checks.

Rachel Clark
•That's actually a really good idea. Do you know which prepaid cards work with Washington ESD direct deposit?

Tyler Lefleur
•Most major ones like Green Dot or Netspend should work. Just make sure they accept ACH deposits.

•Chime is another option that's pretty popular and has no monthly fees

walmart usually opens their money center at 8am if you want to get there early and avoid lines

Washington ESD really needs to modernize their payment system. Having to deal with paper checks in 2025 is ridiculous when every other state has better options.

Jayden Hill
•At least they offer direct deposit, some states still default to paper checks

•True but their website is still pretty clunky compared to other states

I tried using Claimyr when I had payment issues and it actually worked great. Got through to a Washington ESD agent in like 20 minutes instead of waiting on hold all day. Really helped me sort out my direct deposit problem.

•They basically call for you and connect you when they get through to an agent. Check out their demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ to see how it works.

For what it's worth, I've cashed several Washington ESD checks at Walmart over the years and never had any issues. They're pretty familiar with unemployment checks.

Rachel Clark
•That's reassuring, thanks!

•Yeah government checks are pretty standard for them to handle

•Just make sure the check isn't damaged or wrinkled, they can be picky about that

One more thing - if for some reason Walmart can't cash it, try a different location before giving up. Sometimes individual stores have different policies or system issues.

Last resort if Walmart doesn't work - some 7-Eleven stores have check cashing services too, though I'm not sure about their fees or limits for unemployment checks.

Ryan Vasquez
•I think 7-Eleven uses a third party service that's pretty expensive

•Yeah probably more expensive but sometimes they're more convenient location wise
