How to get Washington ESD unemployment tax documents for 2024 filing
I need to file my taxes and I can't find my unemployment tax documents anywhere. I received benefits for about 6 months last year from Washington ESD but never got any tax forms in the mail. I checked my online account but I'm not seeing anything there either. Does anyone know how to get these documents? I'm worried I'm going to miss the tax deadline.

You should have received a 1099-G form from Washington ESD. Check your secure messages in your online account first - they sometimes send them electronically. If you can't find it there, you can request a duplicate through your Washington ESD account or call them directly.

•I looked in secure messages but there's nothing there. How do I request a duplicate through the website?

•Log into your account and look for a section called 'Tax Information' or '1099-G'. There should be an option to view or print your form there.

Had the same problem last month! Spent hours trying to get through to Washington ESD on the phone with no luck. Finally found a service called Claimyr that helped me get connected to an actual person. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Got my 1099-G sorted out in one call.

•Thanks! I'll check that out. I hate trying to call Washington ESD, always get hung up on.

•Is that service legit? Sounds too good to be true for getting through to ESD.

•It's real - they basically handle the calling and waiting for you. Way better than sitting on hold for hours yourself.

The 1099-G forms are usually mailed out by January 31st each year. If you moved during the year and didn't update your address with Washington ESD, that could be why you didn't receive it. You can also download it directly from your online account under the 'Correspondence' section.

•I did move last summer but I thought I updated my address. Let me double check that.

•Same thing happened to me - moved and never got my form. Had to call Washington ESD to get it resent to my new address.

•They do offer electronic delivery if you sign up for it in your account preferences. Most people just don't know about it.

•well they should make it more obvious! I had no idea that was even an option

Important note: even if you can't find your 1099-G, you still need to report all unemployment income on your tax return. The IRS already has this information from Washington ESD, so don't think you can skip reporting it just because you don't have the form.

•Good point. Do you know if there's a way to see the total amount I received for the year somewhere online?

•Yes, log into your Washington ESD account and look at your payment history. You can add up all the payments you received in 2024.

•Just make sure you're only counting the actual benefit amount, not any taxes that were withheld.

I never received mine either and when I finally got through to someone at Washington ESD they said there was a 'processing delay' for some 1099-G forms this year. Apparently they're still sending out batches through February.

•That's kind of reassuring actually. Maybe mine is still coming in the mail.

•Still worth checking online though - even if the mailed version is delayed, the electronic version should be available.

Pro tip: if you had taxes withheld from your unemployment benefits, that info will also be on the 1099-G. You'll need that for your tax return too. I forgot about that part last year and had to amend my return.

•Oh good point! I did elect to have taxes withheld so I'll need to look for that amount too.

•How much tax do they usually withhold? I'm trying to figure out if I need to pay more when I file.

•I think it's 10% federal but I'm not 100% sure. Your 1099-G will show the exact amount.

Just went through this myself. Logged into my Washington ESD account, clicked on 'View and Maintain Account Information', then 'Correspondence', and my 1099-G was right there as a PDF. Took like 2 minutes once I knew where to look.

•Perfect! I'm going to try that right now. Thanks for the step by step directions.

If all else fails and you absolutely can't get your 1099-G, you can still file your taxes. Just report all the unemployment income you received and explain to your tax preparer that you're missing the form. The IRS will match it up on their end.

•This is true but it's still better to get the actual form if possible. Makes everything cleaner and easier.

•Absolutely agree - just saying it's not the end of the world if you can't get it in time for filing.

Washington ESD is the WORST when it comes to getting documents. I've been trying to get my 1099-G for three weeks now. Their phone system is a joke and the website never works properly. This is exactly why people avoid dealing with government agencies.

•That's exactly why I ended up using Claimyr - got tired of the runaround from Washington ESD. Sometimes you just need to talk to a human being.

•Maybe I should try that service you mentioned. At this point I'm desperate.

•I feel your frustration but once you know where to look online it's actually pretty easy to get the forms.

For anyone still having trouble: the 1099-G should show up in your online account under either 'Correspondence', 'Tax Documents', or 'Forms'. Different people seem to find it in different places for some reason. Just keep clicking around until you find it.

•Found it! It was under Correspondence like someone mentioned earlier. Thanks everyone for the help!

One more thing to remember - if you received unemployment from multiple states during 2024, you'll need a 1099-G from each state. Washington ESD will only show benefits paid by Washington state.

•That doesn't apply to me but good to know for others who might have moved during the year.

•This is important! I moved from California to Washington mid-year and needed forms from both states.

Also worth noting that if you repaid any unemployment benefits during 2024 (like if you had an overpayment), that should also be reflected on your 1099-G. You might be able to deduct the repayment amount.

•Good point about overpayments. I had to pay back some benefits and wasn't sure how that would affect my taxes.

•Yeah, definitely talk to a tax professional about that situation. The rules can be pretty complex.

I work at a tax prep office and we see this all the time. Washington ESD 1099-G forms are usually available online by mid-January, even if the mailed copies are delayed. Always check your online account first before calling.

•That's really helpful to know. I wish Washington ESD made this clearer on their website.

•Do you know if there's a specific deadline for when they have to make the forms available online?

Kristin Frank
•I believe they're required to have them available by January 31st, same as the mailing deadline, but I'd double check that.

Last resort option: if you really can't get your 1099-G and need to file ASAP, you can use your Washington ESD payment history to calculate the total yourself. Just make sure you account for any taxes that were withheld.
