How to file for unemployment Washington ESD - need help with the process
I just got laid off from my job at a casino here in Washington and I need to file for unemployment benefits but I'm completely lost on where to start. I've never had to do this before and the Washington ESD website is confusing me. Can someone walk me through the basic steps of how to file for unemployment in Washington state? Do I need to have certain documents ready? How long does it usually take to get approved?

First thing you need to do is go to the Washington ESD website and create an account. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the past 18 months including employer names, addresses, and dates of employment. Make sure you have your last employer's information handy too.

•Thanks! Do I need pay stubs or anything like that when I file the initial claim?

Ingrid Larsson
•No, you don't need pay stubs for the initial filing, but having them can help verify your wages if there are any discrepancies later.

The Washington ESD online system is at secure.esd.wa.gov - you'll file your initial claim there and then file weekly claims every week to get paid. Make sure you file your claim right away because benefits start from the week you file, not when you lost your job.

•Oh wow I didn't know that! I got laid off 3 days ago, am I already losing money by waiting?

Carlos Mendoza
•You should be fine if you file this week, but definitely don't wait any longer. The sooner the better.

One thing that helped me when I was struggling to get through to Washington ESD was using claimyr.com - it's a service that handles the calling for you so you don't have to sit on hold for hours. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Really saved me time when I needed to talk to someone about my claim status.

•Is that legit? Sounds too good to be true tbh

•Yeah it's real, I was skeptical too but it actually worked. They call Washington ESD for you and get you connected to an agent.

•That might be helpful later if I run into issues. Right now I just need to get the initial claim filed.

Make sure you understand the job search requirements too! In Washington you need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log of them. The Washington ESD website has details about what counts as a valid job search activity.

•Do I need to start job searching right away or can I wait until my claim is approved?
0 coins
Raj Gupta
•You should start immediately. The job search requirement begins with your first week of claiming benefits.

ugh the washington esd system is so confusing, took me forever to figure out how to file my weekly claims

•That's what I'm worried about! Is the weekly filing process complicated?

•It's not too bad once you get used to it. You just answer questions about whether you worked, if you're available for work, and your job search activities.

Fair warning - if there are any issues with your claim it might go into adjudication which can take weeks or even months to resolve. Mine was stuck for 6 weeks because they needed to verify my work history.

Tyrone Johnson
•What kind of issues cause adjudication? I want to avoid that if possible.

•Things like if you quit your job, were fired for misconduct, have wage discrepancies, or if they can't verify your employment. Just be completely honest when filing.

•Yeah honesty is key. Any inconsistencies can trigger an investigation.

Also important to know - Washington has a one week waiting period, so you won't get paid for your first week of unemployment. It's unpaid but you still need to file the weekly claim for that week.

•So I file for the first week but don't get paid for it? That seems weird.

Ingrid Larsson
•Right, it's like a deductible. You get paid starting from your second week of benefits if you're eligible.

Make sure you have a good phone number and email on file because Washington ESD will contact you if they need additional information. Check your account regularly too.

•How often should I be checking my account?

TechNinja
•I'd check it at least a few times a week, especially after filing your weekly claim to make sure everything processed correctly.

Don't forget about taxes! Unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can choose to have taxes withheld or pay them later, but don't forget about it come tax season.

•Should I have taxes withheld or just pay later?
0 coins
Keisha Thompson
•Most people have them withheld so they don't get hit with a big tax bill later. It's 10% federal and whatever your state rate is.

Since you worked at a casino, make sure you report ALL your income accurately including tips. Underreporting can cause major problems with your claim later.

Tyrone Johnson
•Good point, I did get tips. Do I need to estimate what I made in tips for the past year?

Raj Gupta
•Use your tax records from last year to get accurate tip income. Washington ESD cross-references with tax data.

If you run into problems reaching Washington ESD by phone (which you probably will), that claimyr service I mentioned earlier really does work. I used it twice when my claim had issues and got through both times without the usual 2+ hour wait.

•How much does it cost though?

Zainab Mahmoud
•Not sure on exact pricing but it was worth it to actually talk to someone instead of getting hung up on after waiting forever.

Pro tip: file your weekly claims on Sunday nights or Monday mornings. The system is less busy then and you're less likely to have technical issues.

•Is there a specific time deadline for filing weekly claims?
0 coins
Paolo Bianchi
•You have to file by the end of the week but earlier is better. I think the cutoff is Saturday night.

One more thing - if you're planning to take any classes or training while on unemployment, check with Washington ESD first. Some training programs are approved and won't affect your benefits, but others might.

•I wasn't planning on it but good to know. What if I want to do some freelance work while collecting?

Carlos Mendoza
•You can work part-time and still collect partial benefits, but you have to report all earnings on your weekly claim. There's a formula they use to calculate how much your benefits get reduced.

Honestly the whole process is a nightmare. I've been trying to get my claim sorted for 2 months now and keep getting the runaround from Washington ESD.

Tyrone Johnson
•Yikes, what happened with your claim?

•They keep asking for more documentation and every time I submit something they want something else. It's exhausting.

•That's exactly the kind of situation where claimyr.com helped me. Sometimes you need to actually talk to a human to get things moving.

Just wanted to say good luck! Filing for unemployment is stressful but you'll get through it. The Washington ESD system isn't perfect but most people do eventually get their benefits.

Quick recap for you: 1) File online at secure.esd.wa.gov ASAP, 2) Have your employment history ready, 3) Start job searching immediately, 4) File weekly claims every week, 5) Be completely honest about everything. You've got this!

•Good plan! Come back if you run into any issues, there are usually people here who can help.

Make sure you keep copies of everything you submit to Washington ESD. I learned that the hard way when they claimed they never received documents I sent.

Tyrone Johnson
•Good tip! Should I print everything out or just save digital copies?
0 coins
Javier Morales
•I do both. Digital copies are convenient but having printed backups gives me peace of mind.

Last piece of advice - don't panic if your first payment is delayed. It usually takes 2-3 weeks from when you file to get your first payment, assuming no issues with your claim.
0 coins
Tyrone Johnson
•That's helpful to know so I don't freak out if it takes a while.
0 coins
Raj Gupta
•Exactly. The system is slow but it usually works eventually. Just stay on top of your weekly filings.

One thing nobody mentioned - make sure your address is updated in the system if you've moved recently. They mail important documents and if they can't reach you it can cause delays.

Tyrone Johnson
•I just moved last month, thanks for reminding me to update that!

been on unemployment twice and honestly the hardest part is just getting started. once you figure out the routine it becomes pretty automatic

•That's reassuring to hear. I'm hoping I won't need it for too long but at least I'll know the process now.
