How to apply for furlough unemployment benefits with Washington ESD
My company just announced they're putting everyone on furlough for 6 weeks starting next month due to budget cuts. I've never been in this situation before - do I qualify for Washington ESD unemployment benefits even though I technically still have a job? How does the application process work for furlough situations? I'm really stressed about making rent if I don't have any income coming in.

Yes, you can definitely apply for UI benefits during a furlough! Washington ESD treats temporary layoffs the same as regular unemployment. You'll need to file a new claim through their website and indicate that it's a temporary layoff situation.

•That's such a relief to hear! Do I need any special documentation from my employer?

•Your employer should provide you with a separation notice, but you can file even without it. Washington ESD will contact your employer directly to verify the furlough details.

i went through this last year when my retail job furloughed us. the key thing is to apply right away, don't wait. benefits are backdated to when you first became eligible but there can be delays in processing

•How long did it take for your claim to get approved?

Keith Davidson
•took about 3 weeks but that was during a busy period. yours might be faster

For furlough situations, you'll want to select 'lack of work' as your separation reason when filing. Make sure you're available for work and actively seeking employment even though you expect to return to your job. You still need to complete your weekly claims and job search requirements.

•Wait, do you really have to job search if you know you're going back to your old job in 6 weeks?

Ezra Bates
•Yes, Washington ESD requires you to be available and actively seeking work unless you're on standby status, which is different from a regular furlough.

•This is so confusing. The system makes no sense for temporary situations like this.

I had such a hard time getting through to Washington ESD when I was furloughed. Spent literally hours on hold trying to get clarification about my claim status. Finally found this service called Claimyr that helped me get connected to an actual agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Is that legitimate? I'm nervous about using third-party services for unemployment stuff.

•Yeah it's legit, they just help you get through the phone system faster. I was skeptical too but it actually worked and saved me so much time and frustration.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already tight on money.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS BROKEN!! I've been trying to get answers about my furlough claim for WEEKS and nobody at Washington ESD knows anything. They keep transferring me around and hanging up on me.

•I feel your pain. The phone system is absolutely terrible.

•Have you tried the secure messaging system on your eServices account? Sometimes that gets faster responses than calling.

One thing to be aware of - if your furlough gets extended or becomes permanent, you'll need to update Washington ESD. Don't assume they'll automatically know if your situation changes.

Avery Saint
•Good point! How do you update them if that happens?

Marcus Williams
•You can update your claim information through the eServices portal or by calling. Just make sure you report any changes as soon as you know about them.

my sister went through this exact thing last month. she said the hardest part was keeping track of all the weekly claim deadlines while dealing with the stress of not knowing when she'd go back to work

Avery Saint
•Did she have to do the job search activities even though she was furloughed?

Lily Young
•yeah she did, but she said it was actually helpful because it gave her options in case the furlough became permanent

Here's a step-by-step for your situation: 1) File your initial claim online at esd.wa.gov, 2) Complete your weekly claims every week during the furlough period, 3) Keep records of your job search activities, 4) Notify Washington ESD immediately when you return to work. The process is really straightforward once you get started.

Just want to add that you should keep all documentation from your employer about the furlough. Washington ESD might ask for it during the claims process, and it's good to have everything organized from the start.

Avery Saint
•What kind of documentation should I be looking for?

Wesley Hallow
•The furlough notice, any emails about the timeline, and your last paystub before the furlough starts. Also keep track of any communication about when you might return.

does anyone know if you can work part time somewhere else during a furlough and still get unemployment? my hours got cut to zero but technically i'm still employed

Ezra Bates
•You can work part-time and still receive partial unemployment benefits. You just need to report all earnings on your weekly claims. Washington ESD will calculate how much your benefits are reduced based on what you earn.

•ok good to know, thanks!

The timing of your application really matters. I made the mistake of waiting a week after my furlough started to apply, thinking I'd hear back from my employer first. Don't do that - apply as soon as you know you're being furloughed.

Avery Saint
•Did that delay cause problems with your claim?

Grace Thomas
•It didn't disqualify me but I lost a week of benefits that I could have received. Lesson learned!

Update on the Claimyr thing - I actually used them again last week when I had questions about returning to work after my furlough ended. Got through to a Washington ESD agent in about 10 minutes instead of the usual 2+ hour wait. Definitely worth it when you need answers quickly.

•That's actually really helpful to know. I hate spending my whole day on hold.

•I might look into that if I run into issues with my claim. Thanks for the follow-up!

Quick question - if the furlough is only supposed to last 6 weeks, do I still need to register with WorkSource? That seems like overkill for such a short period.
0 coins
Ezra Bates
•Yes, you still need to register with WorkSource and meet the job search requirements unless your employer specifically requests standby status for you, which is different from a regular furlough.

•Ugh, okay. I guess I better get that set up then.

The hardest part for me was understanding the difference between being furloughed and being laid off. Apparently it doesn't matter much for Washington ESD purposes - you file the same way either way.

•That's good to know! I was worried there might be different forms or something.

Ellie Lopez
•Yeah the process is the same, the main difference is just whether you expect to go back to your job or not.

Make sure you understand what happens when your furlough ends. You need to report your return to work immediately or you could end up with an overpayment situation that you'd have to pay back later.

Avery Saint
•How do you report going back to work?

Chad Winthrope
•You can do it through your weekly claim or call Washington ESD directly. Just make sure you do it the week you return to work, not after.

i'm in the same boat but my company hasn't given us a definite end date for the furlough. they just said 'at least 6 weeks but possibly longer.' should i apply differently?
0 coins
Taylor Chen
•No, apply the same way. You can update Washington ESD if the situation changes. It's better to have benefits in place than to wait and see what happens.

Avery Saint
•That's exactly my situation too! At least we're not alone in this.

PSA: Don't forget that unemployment benefits are taxable income! You can choose to have taxes withheld from your weekly payments or pay them later, but plan accordingly.

Avery Saint
•Oh wow, I hadn't even thought about taxes. Thanks for the reminder!

Nina Fitzgerald
•Yeah that caught me off guard last year. You can set up the tax withholding when you file your initial claim.

For anyone still struggling to get through to Washington ESD by phone, I'll second the recommendation for Claimyr. Used it twice now and both times got connected to an agent within 15 minutes. Way better than the hours I used to spend on hold getting nowhere.

•Is it just for getting through or do they help with other stuff too?

•Just for getting through to an actual Washington ESD agent. Once you're connected, you talk directly to ESD staff, not Claimyr.

One last tip - screenshot or print everything during your application process. I've had the website time out on me multiple times and lost my progress. Having records of what you submitted can save you time if you need to start over.
